#AntiquitiesAct

Secretary Zinke will make his final recommendation over his review of 27 historical sites tomorrow, August 24th. If you have yet to sign the petition or educate yourself, do so now. Check out PEW to see & compare how our National Parks & State Parks receive funds & resources. Management is the issue, not ownership! A garden in the desert, Mother Nature provides us with some great metaphors for life. That even in place where plants shouldn’t be able to grow this species of cactus can thrive. When you feel like you’re in a place where you can’t succeed and life is throwing shit at you, be a cactus.

So much to see in the good old USA. Don't have to travel far to enjoy some amazing natural spaces.

You probably have seen this shot a hundred times before, but honestly when you enter the upper antelope and walk through the winding narrow paths and come upon this spot, you instantly know you are standing on a sacred ground. The extraordinary color of the light, the exquisite shapes and lines all around you, it makes for the most surreal place. And if you are lucky enough to take the photographers tour in early morning, you will practically have the place to yourself. #Arizona #exploretheglobe #places_wow #discoverearth #exploretheglobe #nakedplanet #places_wow #earthfocus #ourplanetdaily #earthofficial #natgeo #nationalgeographic #awesome_earthpix #AntiquitiesAct #Arizona #Grandcanyon

I wrote my first letter ever to a state of Maine senator and was very happy to receive a letter back. Thank you @anguskingmaine for the thoughtful response and for taking the time out of your schedule to address my concerns. #maine #publicland #antiquitiesact #nationalmonument #protectourpubliclands #conservation

On this day in 1908, Grand Canyon was designated a National Monument under the Antiquities Act by Teddy Roosevelt. He said, "Leave it as it is. You can not improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and for all who come after you, as one of the great sights which every American if he can travel at all should see."

On this date in 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt used the #AntiquitiesAct to protect the Grand Canyon as a national monument, saying "Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it." In the more than 100 years since, Presidents have safeguarded many of our nation's most awe-inspiring landscapes as #MonumentsForAll. But today, the Antiquities Act is under attack. Please urge your members of Congress to defend this important law at monumentsforall.org (link in our profile)! 📸: W.Tyson Joye/NPS #grandcanyon #nationalmonuments #publiclands #arizona #scenic #landscape #nature #environment #heritage #history #culture #teddyroosevelt #otd #tbt #findyourpark #nationalpark

Lower Cliff Dwellings of the Tonto Basin. Aaron checking out the view from the natural cave a few hundred feet up from the basin, Aaron glamorously posing in what is thought to be the community room of the dwellings—the black on the walls is soot from 700+ year old fires, cool rock formations typical of the area, forgot to take a pic of the dwellings so the last pic is the brochure. They did not look like this because of damage over the past 100+ years. Teddy Roosevelt created the Antiquities Act (where a president can declare a place a National Monument) to protect these bad boys. A lot of interesting American government history is tied directly to these dwellings!

I went to a special place yesterday. A place that was, until recently, protected under the Antiquities Act.

I hiked to a remote section in the #CedarMesa area of Utah to view a settlement of Ancestral Puebloan ruins that were formerly a part of #BearsEarsNationalMonument, until our current president reduced the scope of the protected lands with an unprecedented (and likely illegal) order.
Many people who travel to Cedar Mesa likely know this site, which one among many in the area—which is a veritable outdoor museum (I’m happy to tell folks via PM where it is). The #BLM does its level best to protect and limit the usage of the site—yet it’s not nearly enough protection compared to #NationalMonument status.
If our ancient history, along with the beautiful and biodiverse nature of this area isn’t worth protecting under the now ironically named #AntiquitiesAct, then what is?

As a holiday gift to the Global Community, I made a video of the 2017 United Nations Human Rights Special Report on the Rights of Indigenous People’s in the United States of America. The report is a screencast of a speed-reading app viewing the report in English at 300 words per minute. I found the report very inspiring and informative.

This report contains the United Nations Human Rights report on the Dakota Access Pipeline, Bears Ears and Grand Escalante National Monument, and other lands, and the potential impacts of energy development on indigenous communities, specifically to Native American Tribes of the North American continent in the U.S.A.

A link to the video is here and above in the Instagram Profile, and can be accessed publicly on my Facebook Page Lindsey Vona

Quick pit stops through Tahoe are a simple reminder of the reasons we’ve spent 112 years protecting these places. And by “simple reminder” I mean a good hard slap in the face.

Alpinist Digital Editor Derek Franz documents the 11-month saga over Bears Ears National Monument, which was recently reduced by 85 percent of its original size by President Donald Trump, along with Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument, which was reduced by half of its 1.9 million acres. A series of lawsuits that are expected to reach the US Supreme Court and voracious action by groups including the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition, Utah Dine Bikeyah, Access Fund, Friends of Cedar Mesa and many others provides a glimmer of hope for those who would prefer to see the monuments remain intact. Read the story at Alpinist.com. This photo shows Lockhart Basin, which is one of the areas no longer included in the two smaller national monuments that replaced the former Bears Ears Monument.
