Sunny morning, in many ways, at beautiful George Tindale Gardens, in #Sherbrooke, today, listening to garden wisdom, learning about native seeds, and enjoying a healthy picnic in great company, down in the fabulous new netted #EPIC garden, with the local #Seedsavers group. So glad I found them! Now home, & back to work, after a little Sunday siesta, I think... It the #simplelifeforme...
The #sweetpotato saga continues. Sweet potato chips fried in a combination of grape seed oil and coconut oil, tossed in freshly ground pink salt, and baked to perfection. Made from sweet potatoes frown in a self-watering container in the Learn & Grow test garden #TeachEverywhereGrowAnywhere #FoodSecurityIsFreedom learn-and-grow.org
The new configuration of the Learn & Grow test garden, after moving everything to clean the chicken pens and orient them on new, clean ground. The self-watering containers are bunched more closely around the pens to provide a windbreak and a tiny bit of insulation now that winter is approaching. We're in Southern California, so it's pretty warm year round compared to most places, but it can get pretty cold at night. We gave our #layinghens fresh bedding in their pens after the move. There is still a lot of old dirty bedding, waste, and molted feathers to gather up for composting, but we've got it all down to a single pile. It will become awesome fertilizer #TeachEverywhereGrowAnywhere #FoodSecurityIsFreedom learn-and-grow.org
#sweetpotatoes harvested from a self-watering container in the Learn & Grow test garden. These guys were choking the roots of our #anaheimchiles growing in the same container and bass clogged up the atrium drain acting as the wicking basket for the self-watering part of the container. If the chile plants recover from the shock of being dug up and replanted, they'll be happy to find they've got the soil to themselves, now #TeachEverywhereGrowAnywhere #FoodSecurityIsFreedom learn-and-grow.org
I made this photo with just 3 hearts on it to entice a volunteer via text to work in the Learn & Grow test garden, but FB has a frame that makes it even better. (You know your method is effective when a teenage boy replies with "Aw!" and promises to be there the next day). This little Silkie hen is named Quiet Riot. She steals hearts and lays the most perfect little eggs. #TeachEverywhereGrowAnywhere #FoodSecurityIsFreedom learn-and-grow.org
First, the broad perspective of "The Dragon" growing out of its self-watering container in the Learn & Grow test garden, then its first #spaghettisquash up close and the color of the #nasturtiums now growing in the same container #TeachEverywhereGrowAnywhere #FoodSecurityIsFreedom learn-and-grow.org
