@timflachphotography - In 2011 I first met Djala, a western lowland gorilla, in captivity at the Aspinall foundation in Kent, UK.
Several years later, after weeks of searching for him up and down a river in the Gabon’s Batéké Plateau National Park, I found my self face to face with the very same gorilla, who had been since released into the wild. Djala and his family are a thriving success story of the Aspinall foundation’s hard work and commitment to Gorilla Conservation efforts.

You’ve probably heard by now that Bornean orangutan numbers have likely plummeted by 100,000 since 1999. That number comes from a newly published study that sought to quantify how the Bornean ape population is faring. Their findings indicate that both deforestation and hunting are major drivers of orangutan extinction. Surprisingly, many more orangutans appear to have been lost in selectively logged or primary forests than in areas of clearcutting, suggesting that hunting is even more harmful than the influx of plantations.

This doesn’t mean that palm oil companies are blameless, but we need to be doing far more than avoiding palm oil to ensure a future for orangutans. As with any area where endangered animals are routinely hunted, combating poverty, increasing educational opportunities, and developing infrastructure for local communities will be key.

Read the report in Current Biology:
Voigt, M. et al. “Global Demand for Natural Resources Eliminated More Than 100,000 Bornean Orangutans.”

Dr. Methode performed a health check on Umubano Group and noticed that infant Indangamirwa had a wound across the bottom of his right foot. All of the other members of the group were in good visual health, and Indangamirwa was still feeding (though he was barely using his right foot). The cause of the injury is unknown as of now. Dr. Methode and our team will continue to keep an eye on Indangamirwa's foot should an intervention be deemed necessary.

Gito the three-month old ape appeared like an ancient mummy after being left to die in a cardboard box. He was left virtually bald as he was suffering from a severe case of mange while being very dehydrated and feverish. Found with his arms folded, his rescuers feared the young great ape was already dead. Now, after two years of intensive treatment and care, Gito has traveled far along the path to being released back into the wilds of Borneo. He is flourishing at a baby orangutan school run by IAR (international animal rescue) at its rescue center is west Borneo. Gito is one of more than 100 orphaned orangutans being raised for release after being rescued; many baby apes are captured and sold on the wildlife trade after their mother has been murdered. It will still take another five years for Gito to be ready for release in a protected area as he learns the essential skills of being a wild orangutan that his mother would have taught him. #usoa #u_s_o_a #universalsocietyofanimals #news #usa #animal #animals #animalkingdom #nature #wild #wildlife #conservation #gito #IAR #borneo #orangutan #mummy #orangutan #ape #greatape #sos #saveourspecies

People tend to confuse chimpanzee and other great apes with monkeys but there is a way to tell them a part. Look on their backside and if there is a tail, it's a monkey. Great apes 🦍 do not have a tail.

I LOVE hearing back from my Kate on Conservation blog readers. I thought it would be nice to share with you all this amazing email I had last week from Christine Butterworth about her incredible experience seeing gorillas in Uganda. Photographs you see here were taken by Christine and sent to me with the following message (shared with permission)...
.
Having just read your article with @dan710ths I felt I had to share a recent experience of mine. I have just celebrated my 70th birthday and also love wildlife - especially African. I took my first 'Safari' in 2011' and was hooked from that time.
I was lucky enough to visit Uganda last year and went to Kibale to trek Chimpanzees and Bwindi to trek Mountain Gorillas. After 1 1/2 hours trekking for Chimpanzees, we found them in the very tops of the trees, due to the cool, wet weather but were just able to see them interact which was amazing.
In Bwindi we were lucky enough to find the Gorillas after approx 1 hour and I can't describe the experience. At one point I was standing to the side of a pathway the gorillas had made when the huge Silverback got up and made straight for me. I was standing on the branch of a small sapling and as he charged past me he swiped the air which took the branch from under my feet. Such a close encounter was amazing and there was more than one time I had tears in my eyes.
It was also wonderful to watch the interaction of the babies with their mothers. There was one moment when a baby climbed onto his mother’s back (who was lying down), laid on his back and started beating his chest - amazing that one so young already has this instinct. I also watched the very young making their first attempt to climb a tree. It was hilarious as one of them tried to climb a very small sapling and was left dangling when the branch wasn’t strong enough to support him. Another moment which stands out was when a youngster was trying to climb a tree which was in deep shade, when a shaft of sunlight hit him - wonderful
