Found a great diabase dike yesterday while hiking in Southern Missouri. The black rock in the center is dolerite(equivalent to basalt). The pinkish rock to the left and right is rhyolite(similar to granite). Sub-volcanic activity pushed the dolerite magma through the surface and into a fractured portion of the preexisting rhyolite. Missouri’s outdoors are quite different regionally due to the differing geologic history but the volcanic Southern region just might be my favorite. .
