Q. What are the basics of Pull Ups? 🤔
.
A. While we could go on forever with the subject of Pull Ups, today we will look at what you need to know to start out, and what can help you tighten your game up. 🔧
.
Let's begin with the proper starting position. When performing Pull Ups, you need to be able to perform hold what is called an active hang. And active hang is when we push down with our shoulder blades and engage the scapula. This position allows us to better utilize our targeted muscles. 🎯
.
As for grip location, there is no absolute right or wrong, it's all depending on your goals. However for this we will look at a standard pull up grip position which is roughly shoulder width. We will cover different grips and advantages in another video. 🤗
.
Moving onto the next part, which is ROM. In relation to pull ups, this is full arm extension at the bottom with your chin going past the bar and ideally touching your chest. If you can't perform full ROM, utilize various progressions to build up your strength. Remember, to get the best benefits out of any exercise you need full ROM. 💯
.
Now let's look at common mistakes. ❌
.
1. Uneven pulling. You need to be conscious of how you're pulling yourself up to the bar. This can put serious strain on your shoulders if you build up uneven strength with your body.
.
2. Kipping. Simply put, if you need to kip to perform pull ups, stop the exercise and start performing different progressions to help build the strength you need for a pull up. Momentum is not strength folks!!!
.
Now for some basic exercises to help you with your pull up game. 📈
.
1. Scapula Pulls - This exercise will help you learn how to perform an active hang and build scap strength.
.
2. Assisted Pull Ups - In our example we used bands to assisted through the full movement. You can also use a weighted assist machine if it is available.
.
3. Top of Pull Up Hanging Holds - This exercise helps build strength while helping you improve on your mobility to get that chest to the bar.

Apologies for the upcoming rant but am I the only one sick of the alpha male attitude in the gym? Not in the sense of being bigger means better, but the fact it’s a well known attitude that if a person is seen as gyming often or for a long time however on a particular lift or day they’re lifting dangerously or with poor form, it’s incomprehensible to give them some advice? Instead everyone sits back and ignores it? Because the real issue is and I’m sure I’d fall victim to it myself, is that if someone came up to give us advice or something, we’d ignore them? Or even worse, those who are victim to poor lifting, are laughed at, especially when the person in question acts like what they’re doing is correct or impressive. This is someone’s health and safety at risk! Be it injury at the time or long term health risks. Personally for me, I know everywhere I have trained, that I can only give advice to someone I can tell is a complete beginner or is about to kill themselves. The thing that bugs me the most, is so many of us know how to help! So many of us can see what they’re not seeing, they may know how to lift a weight correctly or think they do but they don’t realise what they’re doing is wrong or dangerous. But so many of us know if someone helped they’d be ignored because of this Alpha male attitude or be considered an arsehole know it all for trying to help. No disrespect to any of the gyms I’ve trained in, but couldn’t the management do more with their employees in the gym? In these gyms for example everyone is highly qualified and knowledgable and could easily help, but are assigned the duty of receptionist, or cleaner etc. Of course there’s costs to consider but if each gym could just employ one more member of staff to roam around making sure everyone’s safe or not being ridiculous and in turn intervene and give guidance or support, the attitude would be forced to disappear and if not, can’t we all just help those that need it and when the time comes, get out of our arses and accept some advice without thinking we are perfect at what we do, cause if we were... wouldn’t we all be pros and world class athletes?
