Be an ethical tourist - we visited an elephant sanctuary for a day called elephant nature park which is part of saveelephant.org (a charitable organisation that rescues, rehabilitates and gives elephants a safe and peaceful environment to live. We attended the Pamper a Pachyderm project and had a beautiful day with two gorgeous elephants called Happy and Hungry.
Before researching elephants I hadn’t realised quite how badly Asian elephants had and still are being treated. How they have been tortured. How babies are taken from their mothers, restrained, chained, beaten, jabbed with nails and hooks and starved until they will perform to order out of fear. Whilst being tortured / crushed they are watched to prevent suicide attempts from standing on their trunks. The hooks used; called ankus are still used on the majority of elephant riding tours. Please do not ride an elephant.

Because of deforestation there is less land for elephants. There are now around 4000 elephants left in Thailand, half of which are domesticated. Many are blind, physically and mentally injured. Elephants need to eat 10% of their body weight every day ...150-200kg of vegetation and 200 litres of water. They are expensive to keep.
There are various projects that help to care and rehabilitate elephants, mahouts and local communities. Two websites to look at for more information include
