Damn, as usual I have some major feels post boot camp.
First of all, I think it was @hashoctothorpe who pointed out how many diverse (female, androgynous, POC, queer) voices there are at #abqfi and what a joy it is. The cis white male who was there (@erichusman) lifted the voices of around him, and that was exciting.
I’ve been having a harder time with the microagressions often brought by cis white men and it was nice to have a place to breathe.
So first, the container, was a very a safe space in which to learn and thrive.
The work itself was challenging. I learned how to spread fabric, notch the cut pieces, set rivets on a kick press, and I improved my handling on the industrial machines. I also attempted operations where I didn’t succeed. I jokingly said that @andrew.jamess fired me several times. I probably could have achieved those operations, but I knew we were trying to meet a deadline so it seems the best thing to do to put my ego aside and let someone else get the operation done. Also, it’s frustrating to keep fucking up and having to rip out seams. At the end of one day on the questionaire, I jokingly said what I learned that day was ‘humility’. so fucking true.
I enjoyed something that @erichusman wrote this week about community. With Dr Sketchy’s, that was always my most important goal. And it’s very nice to see that @abqfi is also making space for people to have community. It’s so important that we humans have our people with whom we share common interests.
@kathleenfasanella, as always, makes a righteous pattern. The designers + @quinnthenavajo came up with a fun Western inspired denim bomber with a curved back yoke, shearling interior and blinged out gold shiny inner kasha sleeve. Plus the riveted pockets, the usual reflective sleeve detail and metal buttons. It’s all good.
This was a lot of experience shoved into a tiny amount of time and right now I’m feeling some sadness. I’m happy to be spending some time with the boot campers/fashion friends this evening.
p.s. We took a side trip to @meow__wolf in Santa Fe and it’s very exciting to see a rad thriving artist collective.
Thanks to everyone who made this happen!
What an absolute pleasure it was to be a part of such a cool project and incredible team at #abqfi this weekend. Totally humbled by all the work that went into producing over 100 tiny winter coats. When I found @abqfi by happy accident this spring I had no idea what I was getting myself into. We finished the long weekend with 73 (80?) lined, turned, and topstitched coats ready for buttons. Never underestimate what's going on in your community, at home and at large.
55 of 104 kids coat complete!
Dont let this photo fool you, there was an epic team involved in this whole process (see previous instagram photo). The pigeons were but a mere tiny cog in the wheel! So much fun and a great learning experience. Thanks Kathleen and the whole #abqfi team!
