The cause of WWI. The car Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in. Probably one of the coolest pieces of war memorabilia. History at my feet.

Imagine all of them being f
r.i.e.n.d.s and hanging out in the coffee house! That would be an interesting sitcom!

#Hitler and #Trotsky are known to have visited #CafeCentral frequently for it was one of #Vienna's prime coffee houses. When #Stalin was there in January 1913, he too went there together with Trotsky. It would be speculation to say anything definitively but who knows, maybe at some point in January 1913, they all were there at the same time.
Vienna at the time was a huge city with more than two million inhabitants, a demographic development it has not been able to achieve since (currently at 1,7 million inhabitants). It was also the central city of a huge empire in the middle of Europe with a strong social democratic party, so it is not unusual that Hitler, Trotsky, and Tito found their ways there.

A great article: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-21859771

The street corner where the first shots of the First World War were fired. On 28 June 1914, Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo. It was the spark that ignited the well-stacked bonfire, leading to the outbreak of hostilities across the world and the loss of millions of lives. #sarajevo #bosniaandherzegovina #gavriloprincip #worldwar1 #worldwarone #assassination #history #latinbridge #archdukefranzferdinand #hapsburgempire #hapsburg #greatwar #europe #eurpeanhistory

A #marvelous example of how an apparently ordinary piece of #architecture has preserved an important piece of human history.

One of the icons of #Sarajevo city - #LatinBridge. It has great #historical significance as its northern end was the site of the assassination of #ArchdukeFranzFerdinand of #Austria which eventually led to the start of #WorldWar1.

The #bridge was initially built of #wood but was later renovated and built of #stone and #gypsum due to a #flood that damaged the bridge back in 1791.

BTW, this is just after checking in to our room. We quickly move out to explore nearby locations. Not to forget being welcomed by #rain and #thunder by this #splendid #city

The trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. This set off a diplomatic crisis when Austria-Hungary delivered an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia, and entangled international alliances formed over the previous decades were invoked. Within weeks, the major powers were at war and the conflict soon spread around the world

On July 13, 1914, Friedrich von Wiesner, an official of the Austro-Hungarian Foreign Office, reports back to Foreign Minister Leopold von Berchtold the findings of an investigation into the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne, and his wife Sophie the previous June 28, in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

The Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary had long feared its waning influence in early 20th-century Europe, and was particularly threatened after the two Balkan Wars of 1912-13 confirmed the growing influence and ambition of Serbia, backed by its mighty Slavic ally, Russia. In fact, even before Franz Ferdinand’s death, Berchtold’s office had been preparing a memorandum for the archduke, as well as for Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm II, proposing an alliance with Bulgaria to shore up Austrian influence and isolate Serbia in the tumultuous Balkans region. When Gavrilo Princip, a young Bosnian Serb nationalist, shot Franz Ferdinand and Sophie at point-blank range in their car in Sarajevo on June 28, Berchtold—along with most in Vienna and the rest of the world—assumed the Serbian government had some complicity in the plot. Two days after the assassination, Berchtold proposed a “final and fundamental reckoning with Serbia” to the Austrian emperor, 84-year-old Franz Josef, who agreed to send a personal note to Kaiser Wilhelm, along with a revised and more aggressive version of the memorandum. On July 5, the kaiser gave Berchtold’s ambassador what has become known as carte blanche or “blank check” assurance that Germany would back Austria-Hungary in any punitive action it chose to take against Serbia. #onthisday #report #assassination #archdukefranzferdinand #history
