Repost @thelongrunorg who got to experience all the natural wonders of our Reserve during the 7th Annual Meeting this past weekend, which we proudly hosted.
・・・
Yesterday resident Botanist at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Sean Privett, gave members of The Long Run attending our 7th Annual Meeting, a tour of the Reserve and introduced us all to the beautiful flora and fauna of this magical Cape Floral Kingdom. This pink flower 🌸 is Heather Erica which migrated to Africa & has the most diverse genes of plant in the world. @Grootbos is home to a staggering 897 species of plants. This number is growing as they continue to find new species on the reserve all the time.

The oriental garden lizard, eastern garden lizard or changeable lizard (Calotes versicolor) is an agamid lizard found widely distributed in Asia. It has also been introduced in many other parts of the world. (Wikipedia). I took this picture when the calotes was a baby but now it was a teenager 😁

The Barn.
On Sunday @granty_ryan and I shot down to Waroona and then up and over into the thick of the Darling Range to this spot. Had I not driven in from Perth it would be hard to believe that this place exists just an hour and half south of the city. Its fantastic to find places on your doorstep that make your jaw drop. Grant had told me it's like something out of Jurassic Park and didn't believe him, but should've. There's a whole lot going on in the region that's threatening this bio diversity hotspot and the biggest threat is the neighboring Alcoa bauxite mine that, like a cancer, is literally eating away at the natural landscape and all the flora and fauna that live above their precious aluminum. Lots to take in from Lionel and Kingsley and I hope we can get down there again soon to learn more.

FOOD | So I just saw a clip of Anthony Bourdain's new food documentary, "Wasted!" It is set to release Oct 13th and it looks rad! 🌎🚯 With food scarcity, climate change, population growth and poverty there seems to be an emphasis on answering the question, "how to feed the world?" and some pretty cool answers have surfaced, cricket and bug protein powders, hydroponic produce farms, but my favorite solution and one that seems to be addressed in Bourdain's documentary is simply changing our attitude towards food. The global "Ugly Produce Campaign" has done a lot to shed light on this. Why is this important? Because we currently produce enough food to feed a population of 10 million... On top of that, in North America we waste (throw out) upwards of 40% of our food.

I am guilty too, we all are to some degree... We are conditioned to look for the perfect produce, I think we believe the flavor is somehow connected to it's appearance... Why can we not remember what we're taught as children?" Don't judge a book by its cover." 🤔📕🌿 These carrots are the prime example. They are SO Dirty! Comical really, I thought to myself as I walked past them at the market, "does the farmer want to sell these!? - he might have given them a quick scrub..." But the truth is, he likely didn't have the time, and should it matter?

I wish this image was a scratch and sniff because the aroma from these carrots after a scrub from my daughter was devine. Fresh from the garden.

So glad I decided to pick them up.

Colourful fire urchins that bristle and move across the seabed are interesting photographic subjects in their own right. Even more interesting though is to see what else you can find living a well-protected life among their venomous spines, such as this pair of Coleman Shrimp (named after the late, great naturalist Neville Coleman). These shrimp live exclusively on fire urchins, but they aren't particularly common - if I found a dozen fire urchins scattered around the seabed and examined them, I'd be lucky to see just one pair of these shrimps.
Many thanks to my friends the @underwater_tribe for hosting me on this epic, critter-packed, underwater photography workshop at Maluku Divers in Ambon!

#TreeFact:

Common Name: Yakal
Scientific Name: Shorea astylosa Foxw.
Family Name: Dipterocarpaceae

#KnowYourTree: Yakal is a huge towering tree that can attain a height of 50 meters and a diameter of more than 180 centimeters. Mature branches of the tree fall naturally after a certain age of maturity, leaving a clear bole, free of branches, up to 30 meters high. Yakal also exhibits seed years once every three to five years. However, unlike other Dipterocarps with prolific seed years, Yakal does not produce a lot of fruits. Worse, it is one of the Dipterocarps with a very sensitive germination requirement.
Status: Critically Endangered.

Yakal wood was among the those high in demand in the international market because of its polished, glossy, yellowish wood that looks like naturally varnished. Over extraction of this endemic premium species resulted in the rapid decline of it natural populations, putting the species in the highest level of threat both in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List and Philippine Red List.

Its been an awesome 'mast year' in the U.K. this autumn - nuts abound & are literally dripping off the trees! This will mean many birds & mammals will have a fantastic start/store to the 'hunger gap'. This may also mean that higher endemic bird/mammal numbers prevail over winter - with a predicted population bounce next year. In turn this could mean increased 'pressure' & associated impacts/signs e.g. browsing, bark stripping, ticks, seedlings, game etc in 2018. | #Nuts #Autumn #Mammals #Birds #Ecology #MastYear #Biodiversity #Wildlife #Nature #Acorns #Oak #Trees #Woodland #Forests #Forestry #Hunting #WildFood #Foraging #WildGame #Ecoliteracy #Conservation #WoodlandCulture #Bushcraft #Tracking #TracksAndSigns #Woodsman #Ecologist

#UNRC Anita Nirody went to Manado to monitor overall UNDP Indonesia’s project progress at Tangkoko site, North Sulawesi. Enhancing Protected Area System in Sulawesi for Biodiversity Conservation (EPASS) project aims to support and enhance the on-going efforts by the government to protect Sulawesi’s biodiversity which is severely threatened and degrading fastly due to human-induced threats.
