Hello middle Earth fans. I have a confession to make. I have never read any Tolkein. I told my brother I want to start with Silmarillion, but he insists it will be incomprehensible. Thoughts ?

✨The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (REVIEW)✨
📚📚📚
.
Jude does not belong in Faerie. For one thing, she and her twin sister are human. The other thing is that the father of their half sister murdered their parents and spirited them away to his stronghold. Jude is tormented by Prince Cardan and his gang of equally merciless friends. All she wants is to find a place where she belongs. With the new king's coronation fast upon her, Jude must fight not only for her future but for the lives of all others living in Faerie. .
.
I was so worried that this book was going to be a cliched disappointment. I was ready for a premature enemies-to-lovers plot with predictable twists and turns. What I got was a beautifully crafted story in a truly enchanting world. The characters, the settings, the royal intrigue, all came together to form a rich folklore that feels like it's really existed for hundreds of years. .
.
The book itself is cosmetically gorgeous with poems segmenting the story, a map of Faerie and lovely chapter illustrations. The version I have has a striking dust jacket and cover art on the book itself. .
.
The story is fast paced and I found myself unable to put it down for too long.  There was not a dull moment to be found. .
.
That all being said, The Cruel Prince is not perfect. A couple times throughout the book, characters (usually Jude) do some really baffling things that go against what we're lead to think they would do, perhaps in an attempt to show "development," I'm not sure. It comes off as contrived and stupid but I was able to those parts slide and I still had fun overall. The ending is a bit sudden but not altogether unsatisfying. .
.
If you're a fan of fairy stories, TOG, or ACOTAR by S. J. Maas you cannot skip this one, it's a must-read. .
.

“Even with our male friends we have to ask, Is he dangerous? Is he going to hurt me? Will he freak out if I say no? Sometimes it’s easier to let a guy do something you don’t want to do if you think it means you’ll be able to leave the situation physically unharmed. Saying no to a man is often when the real danger, begins.”

I finished my blog post on this mesmerizing book. The link is in my bio. This book came at a poignant time in my @mylitbox as the #MeToo movement began gaining traction. Like Zora said, “if you are silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it.” It’s time we amplify our voices and tell our stories. Thank you Victoria Namkung for sharing your voice and your talent. This book was phenomenal. If you care to learn a little more about sexual assault, visit my blog and add this to your reading list.

It’s my half-birthday today which means it’s also Ernest Hemingway’s half-birthday. Hopefully you’ve already read all Nesto’s novels but if you need a little more Hemingway in your life... I read this little bit of historical fiction in a day a few years back. I also loved Mrs. Hemingway and honestly kind of wish I had read it first. This is my favorite of the two though so if you aren’t quite as fascinated with him as I, this would be my recommendation. 📖🖤🔮 #gthbookcoven

Dear Readers 😊 .
During the Christmas holidays, I decided to clean out and put in order my book shelves. This is one of them. I have 4 altogether. A few books to your right are the indie author books, which I keep together, the rest are books I have yet to read, one shelf of two. This is actually the backdrop for my booktube channel, so you will see alot of this when you go frequent my you tube channel 😊 .

Okay. So I’m always on a mission to read the stuff I never read in school/ the “classics.” I was never technically assigned this book, so my guilt about not reading it as an 8th grader is assuaged, but I’m trying now none the less. And guys. I am in no way enjoying Lord of the Flies. Maybe it’s because I’m doing about half the reading on audio book and William Golding is a hair dry, but yeeeks it’s been a long audio book week. Ahh well. I will never miss another Jeopardy question about it and I think that’s all I can ask. Also excuse the price tag. It would not be moved.

Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill (3.5🌟)
.
"Seventeen year old Brittany Flannery is at ease only in the woods with her dagger and bow."
.
.
I think ultimately this was a solid beginning for a fantasy series. I don't believe it's without some downfalls but I would say that I'd continue with the series undoubtedly.
.
The world itself is interesting, I think there was a fair amount of building and explanation of the history. I'm intrigued enough to say I'd like to see more of it. The reason I say 3-3.5 stars is because the pacing was pretty slow for me. I struggled to stay motivated to read it, which I think was a combination of my own motivation and the book itself. I'm hoping for some more character development to be able to connect better with the main character, Britta, but at the end of the day it's a solid story. It's not the most original story but it's worth picking up.

#qotd What books kept you up at night? You know the kind, you start it thinking you’ll squeeze in a chapter and the next thing you know it’s 6am and you’ve been engrossed in a book all night. Heartless and Red Queen were like that for me! Both times I stayed up way too late wrapped up in these novels!! 📷📚: Heartless by @marissameyerauthor and Red Queen by @victoriaaveyard

Reading this right now and loving it! Two of my favorite lines. #manhattanbeachnovel #jenniferegan #amreading .
“He liked the thought that his own power would one day be refined into translucence, with no memory of the blood and earth that had generated it.”
.
“In the long minutes Mackey spent unrolling his socks, the pink streaks faded from the sky as if someone had brushed them from a table. What remained was an aquamarine so glassy and pure it looked as though it would chime if you tapped it with a spoon.”

Reading The Family Romanov really got me thinking about how despite the passage of time, the world finds itself in familiar situations.

All these books have a theme of change & take place during some turbulent times. We can learn from our history as long as we acknowledge it.

The Family Romanov, Gilt, & Persepolis are some of my favorites. I love learning, but also being so sucked into the story I don't want to put it down! What book did that for you?

Book 7 in #ktbookbingo is by Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. Category “Purchased in a bookstore (not online or in a variety store)”.
.
.
Based on a true story, Burial Rites is set in Iceland in 1829. It tells the story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, who has been found guilty of murder and arson and now awaits execution. With no prisons in Iceland at the time, she must stay with a family until her death. Predictably, her story of how she came to commit the crimes comes out as her host family warms to her, along with the Reverend who is charged with guiding her towards redemption before she dies. Although you see this happening from a mile away; the writing is very descriptive, the large amount of research undertaken evident and the use of multiple characters per chapter leaves you wanting more. In fact, I stayed up till the early hours of the morning and read it in one sitting so I could find out what happened. It’s not a book that everyone will like; but I found it intriguing and agree with the very knowledgeable @cakaveka of @maryryanhbay (where I purchased it) who described it as ‘dark fiction’.
