A polar bear in the rain forest?
.
Actually, this is a Kermode bear, also known as a "spirit bear"β€”a unique subspecies of North American black bear in which about one in every 10 bears is white or cream-colored due to a recessive gene.

Expedition Leader Moira Le Patourel captured this amazing image while exploring the ancient rivers of the Great Bear Rain Forest in British Columbia, Canada. Follow Moira at @onlyonewild to see more more outstanding nature photography!

A Bobcat that was hunting for Quails in backyards along the edge of a ravine that she uses to travel in and out of urban areas where the Quails are thriving..California Quail are a non-native bird in this area they were introduced as a game bird and now their populations are exploding.. apparently there are more California Quail here now in the Okanagan than anywhere else in the world ... .

BEAR SIGHTING!
Along the river near Marcus Falls, on the opposite bank, a beautiful, healthy, regal and truly magnificent Bear.

The jury is out, is this a Black Bear of Grizzly Bear?

Sciurus carolinensis orΒ grey squirrel. I really love these guys, they are native to eastern North America, where they are the most prodigious and ecologically essential natural forest regenerator. Without any doubt these should be the official city pet, there's tons of them in Montreal, you can see a lot of people feeding them... Even if there are signs everywhere saying that you shouldn't.
People may think that they are helping them, but in fact it's all the opposite, by changing their feedings behavior and making them dependent of humans.

A Steller's Jay perched on a mossy branch as it starts to rain.

We've had six or so Steller's Jays visiting our bird feeders daily for awhile now. This was a good opportunity to take a break from editing Costa Rica photos and get back to taking photos.
Coincidentally, since the Steller's Jays have started coming to the feeders there has also been a strange increase in the number of funny sounding Red-tailed Hawks in my yard. πŸ€”

1. Looking for Prey. 2. Staying Warm. Great Grey Owl. Strix nebulosa.
1. Great grey owls use sound to locate prey. Their circle faces (facial discs) have evolved to collect sound like a radar dish and is the largest of all raptors.
2. When cold birds will often ruffle their feathers to increase insulation.

Polar bear season is officially underway!
.
We're looking forward to a fantastic fall out on the Churchill tundra with friends, family, and of course, some great white bears.
.
Thanks to traveler Brendan O'Neill, who took this extraordinary closeup while out exploring the subarctic tundra with #NaturalHabitatAdventures. Check out his feed at @leprechaun902 to see more photos from his northern adventure!

Fridays are for the Party Animals and this Friday's Party Animal is the Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos ssp.)! The Grizzly Bear is a large subspecies of brown bear inhabiting North America. Grizzly Bears are generally found inland and are distinguisable from their coastal cousins because the inland bears are generally smaller. Explorers Lewis and Clark, in their journals, first described this bear as "grisley." Historians are unclear as to whether that description should be interpreted as "grizzly" or "grizzled" in reference to the coloration of their fur, or "grisly" as in "fear-inspiring" or "gruesome." I took this photo in the mountains of central British Columbia about a little over a week ago. We were photographing from a boat on a small river and the fall colors were in their fully glory. It was early in the morning and this female sub-adult was walking along the side of the river headed to her favorite fishing hole to look for spawning salmon. She was moving quickly and not paying much attention to us in the boat as she approached this area with great color and all the texture of the fallen, moss-covered trees. Just as she stepped up onto the fallen tree, she turned and looked at the camera for a split second and I was able to get this shot.
