Wild Peace Survival Bushcraft Kanada

@oblgl ( Onur Bilgili )

A male Common Goldeneye.

Something interesting that I've just learned about goldeneyes is that brood parasitism is fairly common. Females will frequently lay their eggs in other female's nests. Chicks typically leave the nest the day after they hatch and are able to feed themselves so maybe it is easier for mothers to handle the extra eggs from other mothers.

The great grey owl or great gray owl is a very large owl, documented as the world's largest species of owl by length. It is distributed across the Northern Hemisphere. In some areas it is also called Phantom of the North. They have the largest facial disc of any raptor, helping to give them an amazing sense of hearing. #AOTGT #ADGS #Animals #Animaux #CanadaWildLife #science #education #animalsofinstagram #cute #photooftheday

Damselfly peering over a Stick, Coenagrionidae spp.
Macrophotography allows the capture of moments with some of the smaller less noticed inhabitants of our planet. While insects are often considered gross or weird they are the most diverse and one of the most important animals on the planet.

Mute swans mate for life and use the same nest every year. The mute swan is an introduced species in North America. The name 'mute' derives from it being less vocal than other swan species. 📷 John Anderson. #AOTGT#ADGS #Animals #Animaux #CanadaWildLife#science #education #animalsofinstagram#cute #photooftheday

A young Bald Eagle that's just starting to get its white head feathers.

Saturday December 16 is this year's Christmas Bird Count for Victoria. The Christmas bird count acts as a census for the birds in The area. The idea is that if an area can be birded extensively on a single day, you can get a rough idea of what species and how many of them are in that area. This is a fun excuse to get out birding and people of all skill levels are welcome. If you're interested in participating more info can be found on the Victoria Natural History Society website.

Three springtails that I photographed in my backyard yesterday. Springtails are a group of non-insect hexapods that belong to the class Entognatha. Members of the Entognatha are entognathous, meaning that their mouth parts are inside their head rather than outside like most insects. Springtails also have a fork shaped appendage called a furcula on the underside of their body that is held under tension. When a springtail feels threatened, they release the tension and the furcula snaps down against the ground sending the springtail flying to safety!
Within the springtails (Collembola) there are currently four orders, the springtails I've posted belong to three separate orders. The first in the series belongs to the order Poduromorpha, recognized for being plump little springtails. This individual is Morulodes serratus (Thank you Frans Janssens for identifying these springtails!). I can't find any information on M. serratus except for that it has been found in a number of Vancouver Island springtail surveys and may be associated with Douglas Fir forests.

The second springtail belongs to the order Entomobryomorpha. They are commonly referred to as the Elongate-bodied Springtails and are recognized as the slimmest of the springtails. They are also the largest order of springtails in terms of number of species. This individual is Pogonognathellus bidentatus (what a mouthful). Again, not much I can find on this species, seems more widespread than the previous springtail.

The last is my favourite of the orders, the Symphylpleona, more commonly known as the Globular Springtails. They are easily distinguished by their round bodies, nothing else that I've come across so far looks even remotely similar to them. The globular springtails have a little tube on their underside that can expel a droplet of grooming fluid that they rub over their bodies with their forelegs, very similar looking to a cat grooming itself. This is Vesicephalus occidentalis, a rare species of springtail. What is interesting about this species are the transparent white lumps between the 'eyes' (actually a cluster of light sensitive organs called ocelli). **CONTINUED IN COMMENTS**

Coyote spotting on our river valley walk today. Please don't purchase CanadaGoose jackets... so many dead-coyote free alternatives. I learned recently that wildlife rescuers can't help coyotes at the moment if they're injured but we're working to change that. So lucky to be in proximity to these beautiful creatures 😍
