A Long-legged Fly photographed on Pender Island during a Bioblitz last year.

Long-legged flies (Dolichopodidae) are a very large family of flies with more than 7000 species currently described. This is a very diverse family but one trait that apparently many of the species have in common is that the males have “unusually large genitalia” (Wikipedia). During courtship they use visual cues rather than chemical so the males tend to have elaborate displays.

When I started taking photos I honestly thought I wasn’t ever going to take pictures of squirrels people see them everyday and all there good for is freaking out people’s dogs and digging holes in my mothers flowers but I was wrong #canadawildlife #nikond5300 #ontariowildlife

A Chestnut-backed Chickadee hanging off the top of a Western Red Cedar.

This young Western Red Cedar is conveniently growing right next to where we hang our bird feeders. It makes a great perch for the smaller birds before they go in for a meal.

The southern resident orcas, or Salish Sea Orcas, split off from regular populations around 700,000 years ago. They have spent 700,000 years in the coastal waters of B.C. and Washington state but current research indicates there is a 25-50% chance of extinction THIS CENTURY if conditions don’t improve. There is a petition for the government to impose an emergency order creating feeding refuges for the whales, restricting chinook fisheries and introducing speed limits for large commercial vessels transiting by key foraging areas. The current population sits at 76, the lowest in more than 30 years, and there hasn’t been a calf born since 2015 that has survived. If you are #Canadian, please visit the link in my bio and sign the petition. Seeing these whales in the wild was both a an exhilarating and emotional experience. If we don’t do something then your children or their children will never get to experience these amazing creatures. It would be a shame to see them disappear, and would be another colossal failure of humans as a species...and we have had too many of those. Please compel the government to do something!

A Red-breasted Nuthatch on a mossy maple branch.

It took awhile before a nuthatch would stay put long enough for me to get a decent photo. These little birds tend to dart around pretty quickly.

"On a scale of 1 to 10, how cute and curious are the Black-Capped Chickadees in your local conservation Park?" 11. The answer is 11. 🐦📸🎥A symbol of #massachusetts, #maine, and #newbrunswick, this bird can be seen throughout the #hiltonfalls conservation area. We also learned that volcanic rock is used in place of salt on the trails for preservation purposes! Keep up the great conservation work @conservationhalton. On its last 6 legs. Caddisflies (Tricoptera) might not be the prettiest of animals but they are important bioindicators for water pollution. They live in fresh water (preferably clean) as juveniles and emerge as flying adults to reproduce. In the winter of cold climates the adults cannot maintain their own body temperature so they die off but the aquatic juveniles survive. This one was close to perishing.

I found this icheneumonid wasp in a stump last week while I was setting up to do some bird photos.

This wasp has been identified to the genus Polyaulon. Some species within this genus are sexually dimorphic, the females are flightless lacking wings. This individual is a flightless female. There’s not a whole lot of information available about this genus online. From what I have read, these wasps are parasitoids of spiders. They lay their eggs in spider’s egg cases.
