Scoliosis is a common problem and majority of cases the causes of scoliosis are yet unknown the term 'idiopathic' is used.
Management and treatment can be aimed at prevention and constitute instruction on good body mechanics, appropriate postural exercises, gentle chiropractic adjustments, pilates exercises and possibly some mechanical assistance such as foot raises to correct alignment.
One possible cause of idiopathic scoliosis is muscle imbalance. A muscle imbalance occurs where the forces exerted by the muscles pulling across the spine are unequal. This can cause a sideways shift of the spine (scoliosis). Commonly this occurs due to highly repetitive asymmetrical actions/postures repeated regularly for long periods of time.
The more flexible the spine is to start with, the more effect a muscle imbalance will have on it. For this reason young children are much more prone to developing a scoliosis from a muscle imbalance than an adult.

Here we present the case of a 21 year-old female who presented to our clinic for assessment and treatment of a #S-SHAPEDSCOLIOSIS measuring 28 degrees THORACIC and 18 degree LUMBAR.

The pictures shown are treatment results from MAY 22, 2017 thru SEPT 23, 2017. During this period she underwent a total of 15 SESSIONS of specifically vectored #chiropracticadjustments , curve specific #exercises, our system of Active Corrective Exercises (ACEs) and the unique application of other treatment modalities. For thirty years I had reduced movement in my neck, pain and blinding headaches even after physio and numerous visits to the GP.
I watched a Chiropractor on YouTube and decided to give it a go, by this stage I had tried many different types of treatment and as I aged it had become more problematic.
After my first appointment I left with more movement in my neck, I could look over my shoulder without pain, I have not had any headaches and I felt my posture had changed. Dr. Doerge was a patient before he became a doctor. After a wrestling injury to his lower back, where he had shooting electrical pain down his leg, he thought his wrestling career was over. Thanks to his chiropractor Dr. Gilbertson, was able to get him to the state tournament, world team trials, and beyond where he even wrestled in college. If it were not for that injury he probably would not ever have experienced the miracle of chiropractic care. Dr. Doerge completed his undergraduate degree at Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington on a wrestling scholarship. But if you’re human, it’s safe to say you don’t live your life in the sagittal plane🚴🏼‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️Even if you are a runner, training outside the sagittal plane is ridiculously important if you expect to avoid injury. While I get to be better and faster at running you need to run, you also have to take into account that the transverse plane groups are what keep you from falling over, developing IT band issues, hamstring strains, knee pain, etc. Time to train a little smarter🤓
Still working off of my dad’s back injury—after a little assessing, that transverse plane isn’t quite up to par with everything else. Chain-sawing, then lifting wood and loading up the wheel barrel require a lot of rotational strength, as well as the know-how of the proper body mechanics to execute said task. So in his case, minus these important factors lead to pulling that strength from elsewhere and the low back/QL was overloaded. No Bueno. Folks with sub-optimal rotational strength also often lack adductor length and have poor hip rotation, and compensate with injurious movement compensation strategies at the knee and lower back😣 This is why you have to watch your patients move!
When it comes to training this plane, it may seem that activities such as single limb stance, step ups and lunging are all sagittal or frontal plane activities—I beg to differ🙄. To do a proper lunge without falling over, adduction/abducting at the hip, keeping shoulders square, ribs stacked on pelvis you need a stable set of muscle groups that control rotational movement. These are great places to start in folks who are on the upside of their injury so we can take them away from those mat exercises and into a more functional pattern of movement. Then add in some arms. Then load a little. Then rotate, then add band resistance, then eccentrics…you get the potential here. Emphasizing the importance of getting your strength from this plane is the key to preventing future injuries🌟

A drill that should be utilised for those who take part in sports that involve speed, strong strides and power in their kicking. This exercise is designed to isolate the hip, while also focusing on stability and core control. It takes aim mainly at the hip flexor muscles (iliopsoas, sartorius, rec fem). The band not only adds resistance, but makes the individual focus on positioning and form. There are many variations of this exercise. Some may choose to do the exercise with a cable machine. The angle of your body can also be altered to suit your needs in your chosen sport. This video demonstrates the upright standing knee drive done utilisng a resistance band.
To perform, anchor the resistance band around a pillar, post or pole. Place the band around the ankle, and stand a certain distance away from the anchor so the band is in tension. Face away from the anchor and assume a position so the legs are in a split stance, like you are mid stride, placing the resisted leg behind. Drive your knee upward, making sure the thigh is horizontal. Hold this position for a second or two, then control the leg back down to its starting position. Important to have the arms involved, and remember to be explosive with the knee drive.
