The Gorgias ▪️ Plato, Part I: Gorgias (447a – 461b)

The Gorgias depicts a conversation between Socrates and three orators: Gorgias, Polus and Callicles (chronologically) regarding justice, power and the human good. Plato is concerned with the question of what kind of life we should want to live and in this dialogue he shows how worried he is with the fact that orators in Ancient Greece had great power. They had the ability to persuade people, which in their democracy specially was a very valuable skill. Plato’s worry can be translated to modern life if we substitute orators with mass media. Both are agents with a great power of persuasion who do not care about “Justice itself” (the Form of Justice, the real true Justice). They are only interested in increasing their influence.

Socrates starts by asking a definition of rhetoric (oratory) out of Gorgias. The answer he gets is that rhetoric is the power to persuade about the things which are just and unjust. However, Socrates is able to show that Gorgias is in a bad state (he has conflicting beliefs) and finally argues that the persuasion that rhetoric employs produces conviction instead of knowledge because orators opinion (doxa) instead of knowledge (episteme).

The Gorgias ▪️ Plato, Part II: Polus (461b – 481b)

Gorgias had made two central assumptions about rhetoric:

1.  That it is a skill (techne)

2.  It gives great power

Polus begins being mad at Socrates for forcing Gorgias to contradict himself out of shame by saying that orators know what is just and teach it. Socrates then claims that rhetoric is not a craft (techne) but a knack with the aim of producing gratification and pleasure. He distinguishes between practices which make the body and the soul fit: medicine, gymnastics, justice and legislation; and those who make the body and the soul appear to be fit: cookery, cosmetics, rhetoric and sophistry (correspondingly). He defines the latter group as flatteries, which do not care of what is good but instead guess at what is pleasant. The 1st assumption is refuted then by this distinction in terms of reality and appearance.

Now, Socrates’ attacks are directed to the claim that rhetoric gives great power. As paradoxical as it may seem, he thinks that orators and tyrants are the least powerful people. This is explained by the fact that they do not have knowledge of what is good and therefore do ad to themselves. Since no one wants what is bad for oneself, it is clear that they do not do what they want and thus have no power at all.

He furtherly claims that the unjust who escape punishment are more miserable than the unjust who are punished. The ethics Socrates is presenting here can reasonably be regarded as paradoxical, but it makes more sense if one regards injustice as a disease of the soul, which punishment cures. In the same way that when we get our body injured we go to the doctor to cure us even if the process is painful, we should also want to get punished so that our soul is cured.

The Gorgias ▪️ Plato, Part III: Callicles (481b – 499b)

Socrates argument with Polus seemed to rest on his admission that injustice was a shameful thing for the unjust person and, since what is shameful is bad, a bad thing for them. Callicles now intervenes and claims that Polus, like Gorgias, made a mistake out of shame: he should not have conceded that being unjust was shameful.

Callicles develops his response by drawing a distinction between ‘convention’ (nomos) and ‘nature’ (phusis): doing injustice is by convention more shameful than suffering it, whereas by naturesuffering injustice is more shameful. The idea is that what would be conventionally regarded as unjust is by nature just. By natural, Callicles means what happens when the restraints of human law and convention do not hold. This idea is very similar to the social contract proposed by philosophers like Locke or Hobbs: in order to live in society, people agree to obey some common rules.

Callicles, however, doesn’t like this system. He says that these laws supress the strong and prevent them from getting what is rightfully theirs. For him, the happy life consists in maximizing one’s appetites and then satisfying them. Should we take Calicles’ meritocratic theory seriously? Yes! We might not agree with him but he does not simply make assertions, he offers reasonably explanations of each element of his position. The question of whether Callicles is refuted, in the same way than with Gorgias’ and Polus’ cases, remains lacking academic consensus.

We have borrowed sweet Hope tonight 💗
She's an old friend of Cody, so tonight our oldest daughter spend half an hour talking to her. Explaining to Hope that Cody is now in dogheaven playing with the other dogs and free of pain and that she do understand that Hope misses him because she does too but that they can always go outside and wave at the stars and talk to Cody... and tomorrow her and Hope could play together! 💓
I hope it helps her with the loss! ❤️

A few more from my recent @nytimes commission photographing a cricket match played between the Anglican and Catholic Churches as a way of fostering unity. Debate at a theological level and cricket at the grassroots, makes perfect sense. If you’re in America you can see the story in today’s paper! (Please send me a picture if you can!)

There is something about old houses. They have so much character and so many stories to tell. And it seems like the best of conversations take place in these homes, adding to their grandiosity and the stories, giving off vibes of comfort and acceptance. #home #old #character #stories #house #oldhouses #ifthewallscouldtalk #conversation #comfort #tonight #today #instagram #insta #picoftheday #instadaily #instamemories #instaphoto #instapic #instahome #lantern #staircase #november #2017

There's this thing about space and our very infinitesimal knowledge about it makes me seek for more.
