Wasini Island is home to some 1,800 people, who mostly depend on fishing and the oceans for their livelihoods and sustenance. The BMU is a community-based organization that brings together everyone involved in fisheries on the island – including fishermen, boat owners and crew, traders, processors, boat builders, net repairers and others – to work with the Kenyan government and other stakeholders in managing marine resources, overseeing coral replantation and improving the livelihoods of community members.

This quote hits me hard.
-
While reading this morning for classwork I stumbled upon this.
-
In context it was talking about climate change and how it takes every single person to contribute what they can to make a difference and change for the better.
-
Not only does this apply to climate change, but every aspect in life.
-
Oh, you don’t like how that thing is or how it works...well what are you doing to make a difference?
-
Or are you just sitting at home complaining?
-
You can always do something about a cause.
-
Raise money, contribute money, raise awareness, work on a different design, different process, talk to People about it.
-
No you may not be able to do it alone and that’s fine!
-
But not for one second is it okay to bitch about it then do nothing about it.
-
And I’m definitely eating some of my own words here because we have all bitched about something and done nothing.
-
And I know I’m not the only one working on that.
-
But my point is this. If you see a homeless man on the street and see that he’s hungry/thirsty, but you don’t have enough money yourself to buy him a McDonald’s burger or even a soda, walk in that bitch anyways and get the man a water.
-
I bet you he will thank you! -
And that right there is a contribution to a cause.
-
And that doesn’t mean you have to go around with 10,000 waters giving them to the homeless.
-
Now that’s great and all, but every contribution helps no matter the size.
-
If 10,000 people each gave 1 water to the homeless, they’d be some hydrated mother fuckers I’ll tell you that.
-
Help the planet, help the people, and help the animals.
-
Let’s give them their water, together.

I’m sorry little baby.
Going vegetarian or vegan isn’t trendy- you can do it to support the environment or to support a life that slaughtered animals deserve- either way, educate yourself and make positive choices for the future of yourself and the planet.

And The Band Played On :

Last night I watched the final episode of the mesmerising Blue Planet II; it was an affecting episode with a considered final sign-off to camera from the equally affecting David Attenborough. Earlier in the day I'd watched a wholly heartbreaking clip here [@natgeo] of a once majestic polar bear dying an agonising death from starvation [you need a great deal of resolve to watch that, so be warned, if you go and search for it]. Both viewings were notable for providing the overwhelming sense of all life being in our hands. -

Today @natgeo posted another clip of a truly beautiful polar bear, in its element, the peak of fitness. And, frankly, I needed to see that this morning! But I still find it incredibly frustrating to view some of the appended commentary there, so glibly, and oftentimes aggressively, dismissive of the cause of the loss of the polar ice caps in relation to carbon emissions. It's senseless. And what frustrates me the most about climate change denial opinions and/or the potential cause is simply this: the vast majority of scientific research and evidence currently leans toward the likelihood of carbon emissions being the significant culprit for global warming. My philosophy would therefore be a simple one ... wait for the planet to collapse into the ultimate state of disrepair until *everyone* [virtually - as even then, not everyone would agree - hence the flat earth loons!] says, Oh, yeah, so it was carbon emissions. Or we simply take action now and know the worst case scenario wasn't entirely due to our myopic ignorance. -

And, as Blue Planet II effectively revealed as a salutary lesson last night. Who would've thought, even as recently as decade or two ago, that the 100-year-old invention of plastic, and our inability to dispose of it, would have such a potentially devastating affect on something as vast as the oceans.

Back on the "International Polar Bear Day" we celebrated these amazing creatures that have found a way to thrive in one of the world's harshest environments. Their lives depend on the cold and the sea ice that forms every year. Global warming is now severely impacting their home, reducing summer sea-ice in an ever increasing rate. Even a few years ago scientists talked about an ice free arctic ocean at the end of the century - today we see new headlines warning of this ice free arctic ocean to begin occurring already as soon as this year! Please fight for our climate, call for a carbon tax. The planet needs it, not just the polar bears! .
