We think it’s safe to say that we packed a bit lighter on this adventure compared to when we moved to New Zealand! πŸ˜‚ With 4 suitcases & 7 backpacks this time around, we still feel like we have too much stuff! We’ll probably end up tossing things along the way as we travel the world. It’s all about trial and error and seeing what works. Wish us luck!

One last National Parks post for today. This one comes from an amazing place - even more special in the snow. Have you been to Bryce Canyon? Check our LINK IN PROFILE for tips on visiting the NPs with your family! . . . . . Repost from @roamingthenortheast Another memory of last year’s MLK weekend, the snowy Navajo Loop trail in Bryce Canyon was both beautiful and a lot of fun. I remember the kids doing snow angels on the (uphill) side of the trail as we slowly picked our way along.
_
Bryce Canyon is stunning at every time of the year, but the combination of the red rock hoodoos (yes, that’s an actual word) and the white snow was fun to see. It did make the relatively easy hike a bit more treacherous, but it wasn’t too bad.

There Are 3 generations of Loafers here, my kids, my parents and me. Only lost the 4th generation a couple years ago. An amazing legacy was built by Dr. and Mrs. Monaghan, bringing all their 7 children up to Sugarloaf every winter weekend year after year to their Aframe on the Carrabassett River. How fortunate we feel to have become a part of these family traditions: love of family time, friendship, skiing and outdoors.

Honestly it’s really hard to sit still behind the wheel when you drive along Highway One. It’s over 655 miles of spectacular scenery and the longest State route in California. I just had to make so many stops to marvel and admire its beauty β˜€οΈπŸŒŠπŸ’¦πŸ–οΈ

We had planned to go snow shoeing yesterday but there was so little snow we ended up just going for a frosty hike. No worries, we were outside together so it was a perfect day. πŸ”οΈπŸ’•πŸ§”πŸ»πŸ‘©πŸ»πŸ‘§πŸ»πŸΆπŸΆ

Winter can be so beautiful, but it can also be dangerous if you're not prepared.

What winter first aid tricks do you use to stay safe outdoors in winter?

We braved the cold to see around 50 bald eagles near one of the lock and dams on the Mississippi River today. The boys said they’d be more impressed if it was warmer. πŸ¦… #outsidewithkids

Of the many aspects I enjoy about hiking, I really appreciate the unwritten etiquettes most hikers follow. This comes in the simplest acts, like by moving to the right to let others pass or by saying hello, or even better- stopping for a small chat. Once on the trail it’s almost immediate that I feel this sense of mutual respect. No longer does economic status, race, religion, sexual orientation, political position, anything that sets us apart need to be in the forefront. If it’s only momentary, as fleeting as them passing by, our differences do not cross my mind. I am always just happy for that simple β€œhello”. Those on the trails in one way or another are striving to feel this connection to our natural environment. Our differences aside, we can all relate to that.
This is one of the many life lessons I hope being on the trails will teach my children. That our differences can shine on; yet we can all stop and get to know one another without judgement. .
In the 50 years since Martin Luther King, we still have so much work to do to get to true equality. But it can start even in the smallest forms. .
Thankful to have had time outside with my little dude today (and that we indeed only
encountered kindness). .
.
I hope your day was filled with love, as well on this important day. #happymlkday .
