#throwbackthursday to when I was a munchkin and my obsession with pizza started. Dad thought he was smooth with his throwing skills but now that I’m bigger I just pounce on him instead πŸ˜‚

Homeschooling. The word strikes fear into the hearts of many. (Like. Hours and hours a day and pages and pages of "curriculums" and "have to" and "can't ") Then there's unschooling. Even freakier. ("What does that mean? You don't teach them anything?") The thing is, in the grand scheme of human existence, the institution of school as we know it, where kids as young as 5 are in classrooms for the majority of their waking hours, for 35 hours a week until they're 18, is a very modern creation.
And as more and more kids live life on medicines for attention deficit, hyperactivity, depression and anxiety, and even committing suicide due to bullying and self esteem issues over how they "do" or "do not" fit in to the mold of "normal" ...we have to ask ourselves if it really is the only way. The best way.
Homeschooling was never on my radar as something I wanted to do. Ever.
Like. Ever ever.
But it became apparent that the lessons my child was gaining socially, emotionally and spiritually were not worth what he was learning academically.
For us. It wasn't a trade off we were willing to make.
His self esteem, self confidence, self image, peace and happiness wasn't worth trading for math and science facts.
So. We stopped. That's it.
Whenever I write something about our life, circumventing the institution of school (and also the medical institutions, but that's another post)
I get comments from amazing teachers who are offended by this very idea.
I'm not saying teachers are bad. Or school is always bad or isn't in fact the absolute best place for ***some kids.
I know that teachers try hard and some schools are amazing and etc etc etc.
I get it. I really do
I'm just sharing what we have discovered in our Mama and Papa hearts for our family and maybe you'll see a glimmer of hope for what else is possible for your family too.

Day 4 (cont'd). We ended up camping at Deer Creek after a couple suggested we do so. This was a beautiful campsite tucked away within the woods with wildflowers visible in every direction. I ended up taking this shot while I was soaking the bottom half of my body in the creek. Adam was writing down his thoughts about the trip so far and he looked up for a split second. I had my camera ready to roll and was able to capture this moment. I miss it out there. .
