Operation Torch

Part XXI

The brief Naval Battle of Oran was essentially over after the destruction of Tramontane and Tornade, the latter of which would capsize and sink around 08:25 in the morning while the former drifted until she grounded. Typhon retreated to the harbor while HMS Aurora returned to her bombardment route to the east; she had suffered a near miss near her outer port screw that had caused some flooding and rippled a square patch of hull about 32’ in either direction. HMS Calpe was unharmed. HMS Boadicea was able to bring the fires in her shell room under control and remain on station as well. In the skies above, Sea Hurricanes, Seafires, and Albacores from the British escort carriers and HMS Furious fought with Dewoitine D.520s fresh from French air fields. Inland, C-47s had mostly missed their drop zones and were harassed by French aircraft intensely. On the coast, landings continued apace, with transports able to enter the harbor at Arzew soon after the coastal batteries were quelled.
-
Yet the Marine Nationale sent one more combatant out of the harbor that morning. L’Ajaccienne, an armed trawler of about 500 tons that had been purchased in the late half of the decade, was sent immediately east for patrol around 06:45, but her mission turned to rescue before an enemy was encountered. The little vessel, whose sister La Toulonnaise is shown at top for comparison, encountered the damaged HMS Boadicea (at bottom, ©️ IWM [A 15522]) at 07:45 while en route to a French signaling station. With her lone 102mm gun, L’Ajaccienne opened fire. The battery at Point Canastel joined in, and kept Boadicea at bay for 15 minutes until the British ship turned away, maneuvering drastically while laying smoke pots. L’Ajaccienne would carry out rescue missions for the remainder of the day, as would the tugboat Cotentin. Note the disparity in war-making capability between the two vessels pictured.
-
The submarines were the final French naval element active at Oran on the 8th of November. The struggle was not over, as there would be more fighting on the 9th. Both of those topics will be covered in posts to follow later.

On this day in 1861, the Crittenden Compromise, a last ditch attempt to keep the Union together, died in the U.S. Senate. Taking its name from the man who proposed it, Kentucky Senator John J. Crittenden, the Crittenden Compromise was actually a group of constitutional amendments. These amendments would reinstate the old Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery in states above the latitude of 36 30', protected slavery in the District of Columbia, limit federal involvement with interstate slave trading, and compensated those whose slaves had escaped to Free States.
Crittenden hoped these amendments would serve to put to rest the concerns of the Southern States, four of which had already seceded from the Union. However, when the compromise came to a vote, it simply couldn’t muster enough support, with many Southern Senators abstaining from the vote because their States were in the process of seceding. The final attempt for North and South to compromise had failed.

US Military Attack Helicopters Part 2: AH-1 Cobra

The Cobra was a radical departure from contemporary military helicopter design when it was introduced. Itsx sleek lines and thin fuselage were combined with heavy armament to make it one of the first dedicated attack helicopters in the world. The Cobra began life as the Bell Model 209. It featured a narrow fuselage with a crew of two seated in vertically tiered tandem seats. The pilot sat in the back and the copilot/gunner sat in the front. There were hard points for ordnance attached to stub wings and an Emerson Electric chin turret with a GAU-2B/A 7.62mm minigun. The 209 was powered by a Lycoming 1100hp T53-L-11 turbo engine. It made its first flight on 7 September 1965. The Army conducted a fly off between the Bell 209 and four other new helicopters at Edwards AFB in late November of 1965. The Model 209 came away with an Army contract for two prototypes and then on 4 April 1966, the Army ordered 100 production Model 209s. Since the 209 was so closely related to Huey, it was originally designated the UH-1H. That designation eventually ended up going to the successor of the UH-1D and the Model 209 was redesginated the AH-1G, or Attack Helicopter, Type 1, 7th in the Huey series. The Cobra name came from the 114th Aviation Company gun platoon. A bell representative visiting the unit liked the name and dubbed the Model 209 the Cobra upon his return Stateside. The Army ended up adopting the name Huey Cobra for the AH-1. The AH-1G made use of a new engine, the 1400hp T53-L-13 and it introduced a fixed undercarriage instead of the retractable one found on the Model 209. Armament consisted of the chin turret and variety of ordnance that could be carried on the four hardpoints under the stub wings. The first Cobras entered service with the New Equipment Training Team on 1 August 1966. Soon after, the NETT was sent to Bien Hoa Airbase, South Vietnam with six Cobras. The first flight of a Cobra in country occurred on 31 August 1967. The Cobra received its baptism of fire on the same day when S/N 66-152663’s routine flight turned into a combat sortie.
