One of my (many) favourite things about wedding season in India is that I get to frequent fabric and border stores! I'm always floored by how many options there are! Colour, glitter, glitter and more glitter 😍

I have been bicycling everyday in this monolithic city, weaving through the traffic under clear blue skies and I must say that it couldn't get any better.

“This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet.” - Rumi
.
To know that someone built this for his wife in an era without modern, industrial tools and to see its magnificence up close in detail — it makes you want to cry, dance, sit silently for hours on the cool, smooth marble floors; and think of all the people who built it and all those whose bare feet have stepped where you have. The only other building that has a similar effect on me so far is the Oculus in NYC.
.
I insisted on making the drive the night before and waking up at 5am to push out before sunrise. We arrived the ticket area in the dark, fires still burning to keep warm. As we entered the gates, the sun rose over the horizon. We watched in awe as the sky, gates, and Taj Mahal changed colors. We spent 4 hours there, slowly walking, sitting, observing; it’s a place of love and peaceful rest indeed.
.
Our guide was confused — no one ever asked him to wake up so early for the Taj Mahal in all his yrs of guiding guests 2-3x/week. By the end of the morning, he understood. He said it was the most beautiful, peaceful, quiet he’s ever seen the space in his lifetime.
.
The Taj Mahal, a mausoleum enclosing a tomb with a mosque on one side, was built from 1632 to 1653 by a king, the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal — the one he met in childhood but had to wait 5 years to marry due to lunar auspicious traditions of the time. Due to the time period, culture and politics, Shah Jahan had many wives and children. But it’s clear when you visit this place how much Mumtaz Mahal meant to him ...if material things can describe love and dedication. The design of the art in the walls and architecture are incredible, trompe-l'œil included. There are 28 types of precious and semi-precious stones inlaid into the white marble from around the world.
.
We don’t build things like this anymore. Literally and metaphorically. Head there before the sun rises, it is worth it. 💗
