SETTING GROUND RULES FOR CLASSROOM LEARNING

Ground rules are a set of behaviors or conduct that is expected from participants during the training session. You can set the ground rules yourself or you could ask the participants to create them. You should always establish ground rules at the beginning of the training and explain the purpose the ground rules serve. For example you could advice all participants to put phones on silent mode to avoid distracting other participants. Another example: Critique ideas, not the person (to ensure that discussions do not descend into arguments). Another great tip is to suggest having a parking lot for questions. It could be on a flip chat where you write down participants questions which you would answer at the end of a session. This helps you manage time and ensure that you do not spend the entire day answering questions.

It is also helpful to hold participants accountable to these rules especially if they were set by them. You could exact a small penalty for defaulters.

I was working with an organisation who wanted their new employees to become familiar with the leaders in a raw and authentic way. These leaders had a busy work schedule and were not always able to attend the induction program to meet and greet new inductees on their first day. We came up with the idea to film these leaders in their office and have them talk about themselves as well as walk around and point to important plans and goals in their office. This created the opportunity for every single new employee to ‘virtually’ visit the office of each leader in the organisation. This enabled them to gain a high-level understanding of who they are as a person as well as view and hear the goals of the organisation. This is also a great option for organisations that are geographically spread across multiple locations.

There are certain learning solutions that would benefit from your learner feeling the emotion and pressure of a certain situation. You can provide someone with as many guidebooks and notes on how to deal with an angry customer though will they gain an understanding of how their emotions may impact them in the actual situation? Immersing your learner in the situation allows them to prepare themselves for what it will be like and will result in less surprises and emotional reactions when the time comes.
Also consider someone training to become a surgeon. Their first experience of surgery will be likely to bring on nerves. They will be put into a fast-paced environment that will require them to concentrate and communicate well despite the distractions of nurses talking, machines beeping, and surgery equipment being passed around the room. VR can allow them to experience that and familiarise themselves with that scenario prior to it happening.

When you use VR you can often forget that you are in an imaginary world and not experiencing reality. When you are designing a learning solution think about whether the learner would benefit from experiencing and practicing the real-life situation before they encounter it. This can be useful for high risk situations where errors could create negative consequences. VR can provide the learner with a safe environment to practice in, where they can still experience the emotions and visuals of what the experience is like though won’t experience significant repercussions if something goes wrong. Think military flight simulations, medical procedures and other potentially dangerous scenarios.

You’re standing in a meeting room ready to present to a large group of your clients. Your heart is pounding, you look around the room as everyone settles into their seats. You see your presentation notes up on a screen and read through them to remind yourself of the points you need to make. Everyone settles in, looks at you and you begin your presentation. This is the 6th time that you have done this presentation and you are at a stage where it is almost becoming second nature. The nerves are still there but they are less intense compared to your first go and you feel much more confident about presenting.

"Thought I would share one of our secret weapons - the Action Mapping process. This book is full of hands on and practical ways to solve training problems and design effective and engaging solutions that really hit the mark.
I decided to read this book prior to a client project that we had and the feedback from the client was awesome.
The key takeaways I had when designing with this book in mind were:
1. Rather than deciding that you need to ‘create a course’, change your focus to ‘we need to solve a problem’. 2. Focus on performance, not information. Design activities that will adjust the learners performance outside of the course rather than just providing them with a load of information.
3. Create realistic scenarios from the content. What behaviour do we need to change? How are people doing it wrong now? Use realistic choices of behaviour and allow the learner to experience the outcomes of each.
4. You don’t always have to bombard your learner with information and then quiz them. Try putting them into a scenario first up and see how they go and then explain the answers and the reasons why afterwards. People learn from experience.
I could go on and on but I am just going to recommend that you read this book yourself. You will be amazed by the changes you see in how you solve problems and design solutions. THANK YOU TO CATHY MOORE. 👊🏻✨"

Description: Badge earners successfully completed the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative/ Penn State ID2ID Peer Mentoring Program for instructional designers. Successful completers of this seven month program participated in two professional development opportunities, produced two reflection pieces on their experience, contributed to a professional community or association, and completed a capstone project such as a white paper, presentation, tool, instrument, etc. The ID2ID program provides instructional designers an opportunity to engage a community of colleagues across higher education institutions that share the same passion for advancing teaching and learning. This program is designed to help participants grow professionally through focusing on common areas of interest such as: faculty development, academic transformation, digital literacies, accessibility, assessment, open education, and learning spaces.
