Here lies Tom “Shotgun” Rogers, a pitcher for the St. Louis Browns (1917-9), Philadelphia Athletics (1919) and New York Yankees (1921). In the span of 1 month, he was involved in one of minor-League baseball’s great tragedies and one of its greatest accomplishments.
Rogers was pitching for the Southern League’s Nashville Volunteers on June 18, 1916 against the Mobile Sea Gulls. The Gulls’ Johnny Dodge, a former teammate of Rogers, dug in against the hurler. Newspaper reports theorized that Dodge stepped forward to hit a curveball but got a fastball instead. It struck him in the head, and Dodge never regained consciousness. He developed convulsions and died on June 19.
Rogers issued a statement via telegram the next day. It read, “Words cannot express how grief-stricken I feel over the death of player Dodge. It is the saddest thing that has occurred in my life. No one can imagine my feelings and how much I regret it occurred. The entire club is in sympathy with his relatives.”
Rogers, who was 24 at the time, was in the midst of his best ever professional season. He’d go on to win 24 games for the Vols in 1916. On July 11, he threw what may be the only perfect game in Southern League history, blanking the Chattanooga Lookouts 2-0. Opposing pitcher Jim Allen nearly matched him, giving up just 1 hit. It didn’t come out until later that Lookouts manager Kid Elberfeld was taunting Rogers about Dodge’s death the whole game.
Nashville loved Rogers. The Tennessean newspaper gave him he outstanding nickname of “The Gallatin Gunner.” His success as a Vol brought him to the majors as a Browns pitcher. He won 8 games for the Browns in 1918 with a 3.27 ERA. He completed 11 of his 16 starts. The Athletics acquired him in May 1919, and he went 4-12 for them. His last 5 MLB appearances came with the Yankees in 1921, and he pitched in 1 game for them in the World Series, allowing a run in 1.1 innings.
Rogers went 15-30 with a 3.95 ERA in 83 MLB games, including 42 starts, 21 complete games, 1 shutout and 3 saves. He also won 168 games in the minors. Rogers worked for DuPont Paper at the time of his death on March 7, 1936, from pneumonia. He was 44.

I'm not trying to get any free memorabilia from Jansen. All I want is for Kenley to view this and acknowledge it. 42 more days till the Dodgers open the season at this beautiful stadium. Why point out 42? Cause it's a number that belongs to the Dodgers, that the great Jackie Robinson wore it on his back & it's a retired number that you see in blue in every Stadium of the MLB across the USA... #Dodgers#DodgerStadium#itstimeforDodgerbaseball#letsgoDodgers#Dodgerfamily#DodgerNation#dodgerblue#thinkblue#losdoyers#jonsoohoo#1958#60years#howcanyounotberomanticaboutbaseball#BlueHeavenonEarth#OKLADodgers#TulsaDrillers#RanchoCucamongaQuakes#thinkblue#DodgerInside#MLBmemorybank#gottaloveLA#WELOVELA#ChaveRavine#Brooklyn#42#downtownLosAngeles#JackieRobinson#dodgersst#WS2018
