In the past week: the Grand Canyon escalade project has been defeated, last night Flagstaff City Council voted to stand against uranium transport out of Grand Canyon, and the state of Virginia just elected a transgender woman to the state legislature.
There are good things happening close to home and far from home!
It's a beautiful world, especially if we open our eyes enough to see that.
If we're grateful, that gratitude will overflow into beauty all around us...
Keep shining! Happy hump day!

Great news that the Navajo Tribal Council just voted down the proposed "Escalade" tram and resort project that would have taken 10,000 tourists a day down to the confluence of the Grand Canyon. Led by a grassroots opposition, the council ultimately decided that they want economic growth, but not "a Disney-Land style development of our sacred places." #savetheconfluence #noescalade #protectgrandcanyon #northrim #grandcanyon #confluence #arizona #utah #colorado #southwest #nationalparks #navajo #navajonation #nature #wilderness #environmentalism #conservation #photography #photooftheday #wildernessculture #exploretocreate #imaginarymagnitude

I attended a panel discussion and showing of The Confluence - a film produced by Courtney Blackmer - at Colorado River Days. It describes the threat of a tram proposed by Scottsdale developer Lamar Whitmer on the Navajo Nation down to the confluence of the Little Colorado and Colorado rivers. It was a beautiful film but the highlight was meeting the Navajo women who have been tirelessly fighting against the development. Sarana Riggs, Delores Wilson-Aguirre and Renae Yellowhorse spoke passionately about their fight and what the project means both for their families that live on the land and their ancestors. Though they have had some victories, the project is not off the table and they still need your support. Walking in Beauty.....This is the most profound photo, this is the site for the proposed Grand Canyon Escalade project ,the development would desecrate one of the country’s most beloved wilderness shrines that are sacred to Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, and other native people of the Grand Canyon #savetheconfluence#grandcanyontrust#grandcanyon. Tomorrow a decision will be made for the future of the Grand Canyon based on the ideals of capitalism. The earth is a commodity to some that are addicted to currency but to many the earth is our mother, she is without boundaries between the land, air, water and the one who birthed us. They are all the same. We don't sell or pillage our mother - we defend her. Rise, pray, walk, run and make your voices heard so they know we still cherish her. #noescalade #savetheconfluence #defendthesacred #defendHer

Proposed Grand Canyon Escalade Project: a development project to build a gondola tram to the bottom of the Grand Canyon including a food court and RV park was voted NO 14-2. The bill will move to the NN Council next week for final review and decision. This is a big win for those defending sacred lands. Much gratitude to Save the Confluence, land defenders and supporters ! #noescalade #defendthesacred

This morning, the Navajo Nation Council's Naabik'iyati Committee is scheduled to debate legislation to potentially authorize the next step in the construction of the Grand Canyon Escalade, a tram into the heart of one of our most iconic National Parks. Will it pass and head to the full Council?

Waking up very sore but thankful and in awe of our amazing adventures yesterday on the Little Colorado with @popesjoy @jayydeshaw and Nicholas. It was not easy physically or emotionally but the occasional fear and every bit of pain was worth the opportunity to appreciate the beauty and strength of nature. This isn't exactly at the confluence of Little Co and Colorado rivers but pretty darn close-- seeing this place first hand really helps me understand the importance of protecting this area from the development of the Escalade Project. #noescalade #savetheconfluence #getouside #runventure #runnersforthewild

prayers for water and all our protectors this morning it's disheartening to see I keep telling myself I'm doing my best to help by reaching out to all our Native Communities but my heart still is heavy. It's cold here and so I played some of My Apache bro Joseph Tessay's music on my run. I recorded him up in Standing Rock as he sat with us and sang at our camp fire check it it's a beautiful song. #livelifepowerfully #noescalade #hopitewa4water #nodapl

As you may know, developers have proposed the construction of a gondola to the bottom of the Grand Canyon at the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers. It would essentially be an enormous conveyor belt delivering 10,000 tourists DAILY to this fragile ecosystem that is considered sacred by Navajo, Hopi, and other native peoples.
I fully understand why people who can't or won't ever access the heart of the Canyon as a river-runner or hiker would love to experience this incredible place first hand, but sometimes it is its very remoteness and the fact that it cannot be easily accessed that make a place so special and alluring.
Today is the final day to submit comments and ask the Navajo Tribal Council to oppose this construction. It only takes a few seconds to add your name. Follow the link in our profile. Thank you!
