'Toning'

I'm always in two minds about using the word 'toning'. I personally think it's rubbish supermarket-till-magazine-crap that doesn't really mean anything. However, it's a word used a lot by people who are looking to gain muscle whilst losing fat.
▪️
Someone said this to me the other day, so I thought I'd explain how 'toning' should be done.
▪️
Fat loss, as I've mentioned several times on this page, is a consequence of being in a calorie deficit for a period of time. This can be achieved by increasing cardiovascular exercise (as it burns calories), however that isn't a pre-requisite.
▪️
Muscle gain occurs with a combination of a sufficient resistance stimulus and protein intake. 'Toning' requires some combination of the two.
▪️
Those that set out with the goal of toning are usually new to training, and can therefore expect substantial body recomposition (an increase in muscle with a decrease in fat).
▪️
If you're looking to 'tone'- lift 3-4 times per week, using predominantly compound movements. Eat around 1.5g.kg of protein, and slightly reduce your calorie intake. Simple

WHAT TO DO WHEN THINGS GET TOUGH

Here’s a scenario...

We put a fat loss plan in place that looks something like this:
.
> 4 weight training session a week (upper/lower splits)
> 3 session of cardio
> Tracking calories (providing we’ve changed our starting point, remember)
> Low levels of stress
> Easy daily routine to follow
.
Things are ticking over smoothly and good progress is being made.
.
Then something crops up on us that we least expect...
.
LIFE!
.
A curveball is thrown at us and we start to lose our shit a little.
.
“Balls! I CAN’T commit to doing all of the above at this moment because of xyz!”
.
In times like these our mentalities will generally see us totally veer off our routine and slip back into our old ways.
.
STOP!
.
In the above statement the word CAN’T was used.
.
Too much focus is placed on what we can’t do. Instead focus on what we CAN do.
.
Take your original plan above and look at the things you can do when times get tough:
.
> 2 full body weight sessions
> Walking as much as you can
> Using hand portions to keep an eye on food intake and making sure you’re getting lots of fruit and veggies in
> Meditate to help with stress
.
All we’ve done there is make the best out of an uneasy situation.
.
Yes we might not get as close to our goal in time like this, but at least we’re either making smaller progress or at the least maintaining, rather than regressing.
.
Always focus on what you CAN do, rather than what you CAN’T.

Each year I like to set myself a big challenge.

2016 was the year of the gym. Get my own PT studio up a running ✅

2017 was year of the photoshoot. I wanted to be in the best shape I’d ever been in and have some photos to “prove” it ✅

2018 is the year of the 100km race 🏃‍♂️ X
Myself and 3 teammates will be doing a 100km event across the South Downs, going from Portsmouth to Brighton, with a target of <16 hours.

After first questioning my sanity, I sought some advice from a few people who’d completed ultra marathons before. One piece of advice stuck with me:

“Walk up the hills, speed up on the downhills”

Pretty solid advice for conserving energy in an ultra, but also for achieving your physique goals too.

You see, things WILL become a metaphorical uphill struggle at some point. Work stress, injury, relationship issues, family commitments will all come up. Do you think the best way to tackle these is to absolutely smash it head on and risk burning out, unable to last the course?

Bad idea right? Instead, you’d usually be much better off taking your time, going steady, backing off a bit, ready to go again when things get a little easier.

Végre megvan!!! 😊🙏 A mai napon megkaptam a szakmai bizonyítványomat a hollandiai Wageningen Egyetemről 👩🏻🎓🤓 A témakör természetesen a táplálkozás, tápanyagok és egészség volt, 2 kurzusban. Megismertük a makrotápanyagokat, a mikrotápanyagokat, a túltápláltság és az alultápláltság egészségügyi kérdéseit, mindezt folyamatosan anatómiával fűszerezve. Szó volt diétatervezésről és különböző hiányállapotokról, azok elkerüléséről, javításáról. Minden héten vizsgáztunk, majd a kurzusok végén záróvizsgát tettünk. Elég húzós hónapok voltak, de most már nem csak a fejemben, hanem a kezemben is van eredmény és nagyon boldog vagyok 😊😊 Természetesen nincs megállás, hétvégén megint suli és ma jelentkeztem egy úgy kurzusra, ahol az ételek kockázati tényezőiről fogok tanulni (nem bírtam magammal) 😅😅 Rendkívül fontosnak tartom folyamatosan képezni magam, hisz ez a témakör az utóbbi időben rohamosan fejlődik, rengeteg az új kutatás és én pedig a közös munka során a legjobb tudásommal szeretném segíteni a vendégeimet 😊Nincs megállás! 😎🙃
