Catcher Jose Lobaton has signed a minor league contract with the @mets that includes a big league camp invite, as reported by James Wagner.

The Nationals weren’t expected to bring the longtime backup in for another season after a rough go of it in 2017 for Jose. There are a few young catchers waiting in the wings to replace him (or we trade for a starter so Wieters moves to the backup role...the ideal situation) so this isn’t a huge loss.

Loby was a big part of the clubhouse personality and it showed with smiles on the field and antics in the dugout. We’ll miss you in Washington, @joselobaton59! #Natitude #dcsportsreport

The Marlins are having a fire sale, and everyone is up for grabs. Except for Christian Yelich. Apparently. Just because they are starting another rebuild doesn’t mean that their valuable pieces are going for nothing; Stanton and Ozuna commanded solid prospect returns. JT Realmuto is one of the better young catchers in baseball, and is perfect for a team in the Marlins’ situation. But with arbitration coming up and FA in 3 years, his cost will skyrocket. Miami won’t be good enough by that time to keep him.

The Nationals catcher situation is bleak. Matt Wieters is an awful hitter and isn’t that great of a defender either. His pitch framing is almost as bad as his bad. Lobaton is a middle-of-the-road backup, and Severino is hitting in the .230s in AAA. Not looking good.

Based on the Ozuna deal, the Marlins should consider an offer with prospects in the mid-Top 30 range. A top prospect isn’t necessarily needed. A deal involving Severino, Drew Ward, Daniel Johnson, Luis Garcia, Yasek Antuna, etc could net the Nationals a budding star.

Brandon Kintzler didn’t get the respect he deserved while in the free agent market. Back with the @nationals on a two year deal, he’s out to prove that strikeouts aren’t everything in a late-game reliever. #OnePursuit

Announced late last night, RP Brandon Kintzler has been re-signed on a two-year deal worth up to $16 million in total. He’s due $5 million in ‘18, and if incentives are met, the value is kicked up to $16 million. If not, he has a player option to pick up for ‘19 that would be worth another $5 million, bringing the total to $10 million.

My thoughts? This was a bit of a surprise, with both the timing and the nature of the deal itself. There was an assumption around the league that Kintzler would be looking elsewhere for a closer role, but he comes back to Washington to pitch the 7th. The organization must click with the veteran. He’s a ground ball pitcher that doesn’t give up the big home run. He doesn’t lean on the strikeout, plays to contact, and relies on the defense to get outs for him. Therefore, the traditional metrics don’t do him justice. You have to factor in defense’s performance to see the full picture with Kintzler.

The Nationals needed an arm to complete the 7th-Madson-Doolittle sequence. And we got him. Signing a Wade Davis to push Madson/Dootlittle back and keep Kintzler as a versatile option and depth would’ve been ideal, but we got what we needed. I have a feeling there’s more to come. #OnePursuit #Natitude

Let’s look in-house for some trade opportunities. Infield utility man Wilmer Difo stepped in for some injuries last season and did a fantastic job...but that was just the problem. When healthy as a team, the Nats don’t have a spot for him. Difo struggles at the plate when he isn’t getting consistent at-bats. Both the Nationals and Wilmer would be better served if he finds a starting spot elsewhere.

I’d put him in a package that brings back Gerrit Cole from the Pirates. There’s no need to overpay in the free agent market for what would be a mid-rotation starter — Jake Arrieta — when there is one available with cheap team control left, like Cole. The Nationals don’t NEED a 4th or 5th starter, as Joe Ross or Erick Fedde are in line to fill that role, but depth will be huge in this championship or bust season ahead.

What are your thoughts on Difo’s value? Comment! #OnePursuit

The Nationals are among a large group of clubs in on acquiring Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna. The 26-year old is on a controllable contract through 2019 and brings some big pop to a lineup. He improved dramatically last season, hitting 37 home runs and driving in 124 with a .312/.376/.548 line. That earned him a consecutive All-Star selection and a Silver Slugger/Gold Glove.

The Nationals have a crowded outfield as it is, but Michael A. Taylor/Brian Goodwin are tradeable. Ozuna would be a very solid insurance policy in case Harper leaves in free agency.

The Nationals are one of 6-8 teams that have "some levels of interest" in Miami Marlins CF Marcell Ozuna. Would you do this if your Mike Rizzo? To be honest I am 50/50 on this. Let me know what you think down below. #OnePursuit

Let’s continue our Nationals offseason coverage with two free agent targets. Reports indicate that the Nationals are looking into vet first baseman Matt Adams to replace Adam Lind as a bench bat, and reliever Addison Reed to fill the right-handed void in the bullpen.

Matt Adams was non-tendered by the Braves despite posting a solid .271/.315/.543 line with 19 home runs in 291 at-bats. He’s only 29 and bats from the left side, making him a valuable mid-tier option in a saturated free agent market at first base. Having his occasional pop on the bench would make the Lind loss hurt much less.

Addison Reed is an experienced vet that would be very useful in the late innings out of the pen. He’s been pitching at an elite level in a setup role over the past few seasons (1.97 ERA/10.55 K/9 in 77.2 IP in 2016 with the Mets...2.66 average ERA over the last 3 years) while bouncing around between Boston and New York. He should be a priority target as the Nats prepare to lose Brandon Kintzler and Matt Albers in free agency.

What are your thoughts on these two targets? Comment your take! #natitude

Earlier today the Yankees acquired Giancarlo Stanton. Does that boost the chances of Harper staying in DC? The Yankees were his favorite team when he was a kid and dreamed of playing for them. The only place they could put him is at DH which wouldn’t be smart considering his fielding abilities or they could put him at center field. But, he doesn’t prefer to play center field. He would rather play right or left field. Even if Harper still wanted to go to the Yankees they have almost no money for him considering Stanton’s contract. So let’s hope this means we can get Harper back!

Congratulations to Aaron Boone on being selected as the next Yankees Manager. Looking back in my photo archive, here's Aaron in a Nationals uniform, playing against the Colorado Rockies on August 17, 2008 at Nationals Park. Hardly the team of today, the Nats dropped the game to the Rockies 7-2 in a 3-game series sweep, handing the Nationals their 10th consecutive loss. #nats #baseballamerica #baseball #baseballislife #Yankees #OnePursuit #Natitude #MLB
