Elevation: 1450 m (4756 ft)
Mezcalero: José Espinoza García + co-op of local villagers
Fermentation: Wooden tanks
Distillation: Copper alembics
Nose: Floral, banana
Palate: Mild, fruit, pineapple
*2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition: Best Mezcal + Double Gold (awarded to the very few entries that receive Gold medal ratings by all members of the judging panel)
*Co-op owned mezcal from the villagers of Ejutla, Oaxaca.

Owned and produced by a co-op of 20 families of palenqueros from the small village of San Miguel Ejutla located in the central valley of Oaxaca, Banhez Joven is a sustainable, fair trade mezcal made of a blend of cultivated Espadín and wild grown Barril. Mild and clean, the nose has subtle floral aromas and hints of fruit. The palate is sweet and approachable, with a slightly peppery sea salt finish.

"In the tiny village of San Miguel Ejutla in the central valley of Oaxaca, a co-operative comprised of 20 families (Integradora Comercial de Ejutla) is committed to sustainable, fair trade mezcal production the same way it’s been done by their ancestors for nearly two centuries. Underground wood-fired pits, donkey-pulled tahonas (stone-wheel mills), fermentation in wooden tanks and small-batch distillation in copper alembics punctuate a process that has been and remains the life’s work of these mezcaleros, with the same care and attention to detail reflected in each and every bottle. Made from 100% agave, using only the best that the seasonal harvest has to offer, Mezcal enlivens the spirit, bringing us Banhez, or bliss, in the ancient Zapotec language. Of course, like all bliss, Banhez is meant to be savored and especially shared."
