Felt I needed some colour to celebrate the weekend! Beautiful pak choi from last year we picked as little leaves. Looking forward to spending some time planning the allotment and garden this weekend - to grow again or not, I can’t decide! ⠀

大寒の今日は、庭の里芋を収穫。今年はあまり育たなかったけれど、それでも、充分な収穫量でありがたい。
家で育てる野菜はどれも美味しいけれど、里芋は、格別!

Spring must be on its way! A small bunch of wild greens to toss into a salad or sauté with some British mushrooms 🌱 the young cleavers and three cornered leek leaves are braving the cold and I am very grateful that they are, as they’re super tasty and nutritious. Remember to forage responsibly and be 100% sure of your ID 💚😊🇬🇧

Kalimera!

I still haven't had time to tell you about what has been done at the Park to restore the land and reforest. For the ones that don't know the place, it's a beautiful area of Paros that has been protected for a while from grazing and hunting for many years now. Also there have been many successful plantings done this past years.

The Friends of the Park, with the help and expertise of Elena Symeonidou, have put in place earthworks to slow down the rain water falling in this area, to make the most out it. It's one of the Permaculture's (regenerative agriculture) most important principles:
" Slow, spread, and infiltrate the flow of water". Rather than having water run erosively off the land’s surface, encourage it to stick around, “walk” around, and infiltrate into the soil. Slow it, spread it, sink it." When you have a slope without vegetation and poor soil, water just runs-of, taking with it the little part of the top soil (the richer part) that was trying to build up, to create good conditions for plants to establish. Poor soil doesn't absorb well water, and without roots to aerate it, it becomes very compacted.
If you slow the water down with barriers like stones or mini ditches, on contour ( same level, perpendicular to the slope), the water will slow down, spread on the sides and finally it will be absorbed. Also, because it will be slower, it wont (or less) wash off the soil that is building up with organic matter (fallen leaves, dried or dead plants, etc). Also the stone barriers will retain what water will bring and will create a good accumulation of material to make the soil richer in order to plant.
This replaces vegetation's role until plants, trees and shrubs take over and are able to to this by themselves.
That's why they have placed this stones perpendicular to the slope and tracing discrete lines in contour, to divert water.

To add to this good work, Imerys Industrial Minerals from its nursery in Milos donated 1000 local bushes and plants to help reforest this area. Some volunteers met to help do the planting in December.

May this amazing work continue! ❤️🌱🎋🌿🌲

Who else feels most fulfilled creating, building, and making? Its not always the quickest & easiest path but I think its the most rewarding. We are blessed with so much from the earth, how can we turn her abundances into something useful & beautiful? Bamboo in the tropics is one of nature’s greatest gifts. We can do so much with this plentiful resource. No matter where you are in the world, you also have a ‘bamboo’ - a resource that is waiting to be transformed into a million incredible things; food, shelter, furniture, clothes. Come join us next month Feb 16 to March 3, to get reconnected with nature’s abundances and learn how to work with her, to provide for yourself, your community and your future. Meet Balinese craftsman, and food growers who have permaculture embedded into their culture, tradition and way of life. It is a unique, unforgettable and rewarding 15 days on so many levels. Bookings are open via the link in our bio. Spaces open. 🌴#kulkulpdc #permaculture #permaculturedesigncourse #permaculturebali #bali #bamboo

I'm LOVING this savy idea from @the2acrefarm ! I always give my store bought produce a really good scrub/rinse before I use them just to remove any spray residues & waxes. I used to use a veggie wash to help out the process but I felt like I was just creating more waste! So I'm loving the idea of washing my produce in a water/AVC mix as that's something I've always got in my fridge. And on a plus side not only does ACV give them a good cleansing but it also helps your produce stay crisper! #winwin P.s I've reaaally gotta get me some @theswag.com.au bags!! 🌿✌️🍎🍋

Good old fashioned ‘cold meat and vegetables’! Do you eat dishes like this? A classic Summer dish in our house growing up. 🌞🌞🌞 Great for hot days when you don’t want to slave over a hot stove, but have zucchini, beans, carrot, corn or whatever from the garden to eat. And in this case, I had a container of ‘mixed mash’ in the freezer, ready to defrost & heat up! 🌞🌞🌞 My mum would serve it with ham, silverside or sliced leftover cold meat. My grandma would probably have pressed tongue or homemade brawn with hers (the wife of a butcher, my grandma had all the good offcuts!) Serve it with some homemade relish or mustard... simple but so good.

De ganzen zijn een belangrijk onderdeel van onze mini boerderij. Enerzijds het dieren alarmsysteem 😁 en anderzijds een belangrijke bron van eieren in de lente en het begin van de zomer. ---------------------------------------------------- Geese are an important part of our mini-farm. Part of the animal security system 😁 and lovely eggs in spring and early summer.
