Overhead Press Pain Free🙋🏽‍♂️

✅ The goal: get back into overhead pressing and avoid shoulder pain.

📝 The strategy: slowly increase angle to overhead. Emphasize serratus anterior and scapular protraction / upward rotation motion by cueing a forward push with the pressing motion.
.
📍 This stuff really works. Notice the theme with angled pressing, as opposed a strict overhead press. For most, this is sufficient stimulus for shoulder strength and growth.

Today I taught my 10 year old a little about #Endo #endometriosis - it's never too early to start quality #PelvicHealth education (we of course already started the anatomy conversation awhile ago .. LATEST: ARTHROSCOPIC SUBACROMIAL DECOMPRESSION FOR SUBACROMIAL SHOULDER PAIN NO BETTER THAN PLACEBO SURGERY!

313 patients were randomly assigned to 3 groups:
- 106 to decompression surgery
- 103 to investigational arthroscopy only
- 104 to no treatment

Mean Oxford Shoulder Score did not differ between the two surgical groups at 6 months. Both surgical groups showed a small, but not clinically important benefit over no treatment.

The findings of this study put into question the value of this operation for these indications, and this should be communicated to patients and healthcare professionals during the shared treatment decision-making process.

🏋️️‍♀️It ain’t easy growing another human.
Hit with a small wave of expectant mommy’s with low back pain and even some radicular symptoms in the past 2 weeks. Not totally surprising since about ¾ of all pregnant women will experience low back pain at some point, but it’s not something that they all have to live with. Glad they found their way into PT!👏
Some pre-existing/history of things that can contribute to LBP in pregnancy are: increased parity, higher end pregnancy weights, low back pain prior to pregnancy, and history of hypermobility. Others include the growth of the uterus, poor posture, increased stress and the obvious, weight gain. Then there’s the hormones🤯 And I don’t just mean the ones that makes us want to cry one minute then punch 🥊someone the next, I’m talking about relaxin, which does what it says🏝️. Those relaxed ligaments are important for delivery, but at the same time, put one at risk for MSK injuries.
This is a huge contributor to mechanical instability of the whole lumbo-pelvic region. Poor posture, weakened muscles and relaxed ligaments increase stress to the weightbearing joints, primarily around the center of gravity, increasing anterior forces of the ilium on the sacrum. Then the center of gravity changes. This isn’t to scare y’all, I did this 3x and still survived🙋🏼‍♀️ Some of this is normal while other parts not so much. The good news is, it is never too late to get going on a stabilization program, even while pregnant. While you can’t control so much of the hormone issue, you can tackle strengthening and posture. That’s coming up 🤓

Sin embargo, en el año 2012, Nee et al. realizó un ECA que incluyó 60 pacientes con dolor en el brazo no traumático, relacionado con los nervios y brazo unilateral.
El grupo experimental (N = 40) recibió 4 tratamientos con controles deslizantes y tensores nerviosos en el transcurso de 2 semanas, en comparación con un grupo control (N = 20) que solo recibió asesoramiento para mantenerse activo. ߗ㊢"

Boa noite Fisioterapeuta, ou melhor, meu grande amigo. Hoje acordei, e deu uma enorme vontade de chorar, lembrei do tempo em que podia andar! sim! Eu andava! E assim como muitos, não me dava conta do quanto esse movimento tão simples e comum, fazia a diferença em cada segundo ou hora do meu tempo tão corrido. Minha pernas me levavam sempre para onde era meu destino! Eu corria, subia.. dançava e até mesmo reclamava quando andava muito! Meus planos eram cada vez mais conquistar o mundo, através dos meus planos e ideais! Ir cada vez mais longe! Depois da lesão medular me deixar Tetraplégico, hoje percebo que apenas quero andar novamente, não importa como, não sinto vergonha de como sou ou como fiquei, tenho uma família que me ama e me dá todo suporte, chamado amor! E isso tem me fortalecido a cada dia, mas sabe meu amigo Fisioterapeuta, ainda tenho os mesmos planos e ideais de sempre, porém, melhores! Ainda quero conquistar o mundo! E cada sessão que passamos, cada exercício, cada dor que eu sinto ou quão cansado fico, só me faz ter a certeza do quanto vencemos até aqui! Sabe o que é realmente engraçado? Antes de conhecer o que seria a Fisioterapia, eu imaginava todos vocês fazendo Massagem! E garanto que hoje, não chega nem perto do que pensei! This post highlights some of the main mobility and strength requirements of striking a soccer ball with the laces.

Every desired skill/movement has prerequisites in order to optimize that task. In this example of striking a soccer ball, the more hip extension you are able to achieve in the "wind up" or "back swing" phase, the more potential energy you are storing for when you eventually swing forward and strike the ball.
.
By breaking down a task and addressing its prerequisites you can not only enhance the performance of that task, but you can also potentially mitigate the risk of injury that goes along with the over utilization of compensatory movement strategies.
.
Over the next few days I will post some of my favorite, task-specific ways to address the main prerequisites of striking a soccer ball with your laces. Stay tuned!!

Transformation Tuesday

The picture on the right was taken in 2008 while I was in grad school, the picture on the left is me now after 4.5 months post partum with my 3rd baby and 3rd c-section. Before stepping into my health and fitness journey, I was a girl who was craving more in life. A girl who wanted more happiness, more self confidence, more positivity, more love and more purpose.

After having my 2nd child, and struggling to lose the weight, I joined a community of women who were empowering other women to feel their absolute best. I started working out at home, learning more about what foods “fueled” my body rather than my emotions and I started noticing changes. Tone it up Tuesday!! 💪🏼

I’ve always loved leg day, back in my high school track days I was a sprinter and a jumper and I’ve always loved playing volleyball. So working those leg muscles has always seemed second nature to me!
.
Just six months ago while on my honeymoon I was so discouraged with the way my suit bottoms fit as they continually rolled up and my legs rubbed together with such discomfort with each and every step I took. Even though I had made great progress at that point I still couldn’t believe I’d let myself go that long.
.
I promised myself after that trip I wouldn’t let myself slip up again. I have pushed and been consistent following super effective workouts and meal plans.

I think my leg day routine is working, I just bought myself these super cute shorts in a size smaller than I’ve worn in years!! 🏋🏻‍♀️
