I had a goal this year. I really wanted to take a buck above our family ranch. It’s a special place I haven’t put enough time in exploring for hunting. So I bit my tongue the first week of deer and passed on 21 bucks, saving my tag for a long weekend of tramping about. The first day was rough. 2 hours of hiking in the dark produced a stud buck at first light. Right after spotting him, a shot rang out and 6 horses appeared. The group of guys loaded up a solid 5x5 with 3” matching kickers. I was bummed. But I put my head down and hiked. The third day was the charm. 4 miles and 3,000 feet up I found this guy chasing 6 does. I spotted them after clearing a ridge into a secret draw, working towards the timber. We had to make a quick sprint to catch up, and I had to run to cut them off. I wanted my father in law to take him, but it didn’t work out. He owed me after 9 days of chasing late bucks last fall anyways. A frantic 324 yard shot and the buck was mine. It was a tough pack out. We boned him out and each took half. Scott was pumped. It was the biggest buck he had seen shot in 40+ years of ranch time. He’s not my biggest buck. But he’s a mature representative of the species, and I couldn’t be prouder. I’ll never measure him. But he will be right near the top of my most special deer and fondest memory. #idaho #idahome #deer #deerhunting #muledeer #muley #muleycrazy #buck #bbd #browndown #firstlite #vortex #vortexnation #firstlitemoment #snow #sage #browning #publicland #publiclandowner #backcountryhuntersandanglers

Love it when my day comes full circle. Got a cold front last night, loaded up my gear before church this morning and now I’m settled into my home away from home. And for the record, I was very conscious of my scent before I left the house...I’m fully committed to the harvest!👌🏻🏹 #northtexaspublicland #bowhunting #solohunter

Not a bad view on opening weekend in Montana. No elk were harmed after this photo was taken, sadly. #maybenexttime #blessed #hunttoeat #publiclandowner #montana #worldsworsthunter

What does this sign mean? Well it means that by not allowing vehicles past this point, your chances of seeing more game animals greatly improves. It means more secluded acres for game to rest and do more natural game species things. To take it one step further it's telling you to "use the quads God gave you"! #sdbhs #publiclandowner #keeppubliclandsinpublichands @backcountryhunters @firstlitehunting @sitkagear @meateatertv @olcal406

Kodiak Goat • Day 2 • 10/2/17
WELCOME SLAP IN THE FACE, part 2
.
A new day - we woke up, still wet, and began to prepare for our pack up into the mountains where we hoped to find goats. Our plan was to head up a valley to the Southwest, toward a small alpine lake and the two lone billies we had seen right after landing. The next several hours we were surprised with one stream crossing after another, until we were finally faced with one there was no way to cross other than wading.  The whole valley was draining into the lake with streams doubled in size from the previous day's storm.
.
Here is where I met my first regret of the trip - ultralight packable waders that you slip on in the mountains for just sucha  crossing. How could I have forgotten this essential item?! So frustrating. We spent close to 2 hours chucking small boulders into the river to try to build a viable crossing.  We failed. Has anyone ever done that?

With no other recourse, we abandoned our plan and headed up the valley to the North, thinking that eventually we would find a crossing and double back. Alders and bushed are a %38#@!! Especially when you're packing both a bow and rifle on your pack :) As the day waned, doubling back looked less and less attractive and I suggested it might be better to keep pushing ahead up the valley we were in. If we didn't see anything, I thought we could probably go around and over the mountain, eventually getting back to our original destination. As we finally got up to a "bench" where there was a waterfall (above which we could finally cross the raging stream) we spotted goats on the mountain side ahead of us.
Encouraged, we decided to stay on this side and set up our spike camp. We watched a few goats not too far up the mountain, then at about 7:30pm Peter noticed a billy making his way across the scree rock field above us, probably on his evening routine. Very tempted to make a last-light run up the mountain at the goat, Peter opted for safety/wisdom and chose to wait till the next day.

Taken near Lovelock, NV. Getting itchy to get the Rover dirty again. Dealing with the 3 Amigos atm. Going to start with new pads and rotors since the brake pedal is almost to the floor when I stop so it’s about time then go from there. On the quest for an Idaho meat bull last week in some KNARLY terrain. We sat deciding whether to shoot or not to shoot in this deep canyon. Always an adventure in roadless public terrain.

Pretty view until some idiot drove around the gate and right through the middle of the meadow. Illegal OHV use can cause years’ worth of erosion damage in a short amount of time. The long term effects leave a lasting impression. Be a steward for our #PublicLand and our legacy for generations to come.
