#publiclands

Last night I dreamed I was float-dancing high in the air through all these floating flowers, and tonight on a little hike, I think the Sky allowed me to see what that feeling is like in real life. LOOK at those COLORS. I adore Earth. And yes it was very cold, hence the balled fists. 🌸🌻🌹🌼🌺🌷 #mountains #autumn #earth

What a big day. After getting skunked last year (and earlier this season with deer), today I shot my first Elk on #publiclands in Colorado. What an experience. Huge thanks are due to my hunting colleagues, Dr. David Irwin and @sirdpak. We sure earned our meat today/tonight 🙂. Also, big shoutout to @stevenrinella and his recent book on hunting, butchering, and cooking wild game. It sure helped this Kansas guy out, a lot. #meateater #weareuphillathletes

Mallards were flying good and one drake had a band. We ended the day with 20 birds. The snow showers that came through brought some wicked looking skies. The last #idaho sunset of our trip was a good one. #hunting #duckhunting #ducks #publiclands #keepitpublic #virginiatoidaho

Watched an incredible amount of big mule deer during this deer season. I had an amazing time cruising around the high country with family and friends. I watched herds of elk that covered hillsides like ants. Multiple groups of Big Horn sheep. Collared deer. Listened to wolves howling. Two deer fought damn near to the death. I definitely saw bigger bucks but the hunt of this deer was priceless.

Do you want to see NPS entrance fees more than double for its 17 most popular parks (during peak season) as soon as 2018? For private vehicles the potential price jump is $30-$70; motorcycles $25-$50, and bicycle/pedestrian $15-30. There are enough socio-economic barriers in place preventing lower income citizens from enjoying our #publiclands despite the fact that they contribute to their preservation through taxes. Our gorgeous #nationalparks have seen a huge increase in popularity in recent years, and while trail maintenance and the preservation of #wildspaces and the ecosystems they house are important issues in the face of the increasing influx of visitors, a price-hike of this magnitude only serves to turn away new outdoors enthusiasts and future conservationists. How can you expect someone to care about the preservation of a national park they cannot afford to visit? This kind of elitism has no place in outdoors culture, and only serves to turn our National Parks into an exclusive country club for the rich. If you agree visit the URL on my profile which will connect you to a form where you can send your comments directly to the #NPS via #rei. This picture is from #archesnationalpark, on a Friday during peak season at 1pm. This rock formation is #delicatearch (one of the most iconic vistas in the nation). And despite its insane popularity, and the hundreds of people I shared the trail with, it's beauty and majesty was not diminished. It filled me with immense pride to hear the plethora of languages swirling around me as a climbed up this trail, and I greatly enjoyed the conversations I shared with my fellow hikers while waiting in line for pictures. I wonder how many of them would pass up a visit to #arches if the price was increased by $40 last summer. #optoutside #forceofnature #utah #utahrocks #hikingadventures #resist #radparks #ourwild 🏜️The parks that can be impacted by this future legislation include #arches #brycecanyon #canyonlands #grandtetons #olympic #seqouia #kingscanyonnationalpark #yellowstone #yosemitenationalpark #zionnationalpark #acadianationalpark #mtrainier #rockymountainnationalpark #shenandoahnationalpark #grandcanyon

Some personal souvenirs from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History exhibit I worked on celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Two years ago, this exhibit may have seemed great-but-so-what but today in the face of unprecedented assaults on our public lands and public institutions by special interests, one truly realizes the magnitude, foresight, and courage of those who helped passed a string of environmental and conservation legislation such as the Wilderness Act decades ago for the benefit of all Americans.

This must be how the test pilots fealt when first breaking the sound barrier. One part wholly sh@%, two parts hell yeah!
.
The dogs were primed to run, their excitement boiling over in yips, yowls and lunges. Skis waxed and a fresh shave to minimize resistence I connected the two furry rockets to my waist via the tug line. This was our first #skijor of the season. .
In an explosion of fast-twitch muscle snow sprayed as paws dug-in and lifted off. Dogs and person, now one machine, heaved forward. The acceleration was blinding but I had to keep the trail in focus. To catch an edge at these speeds would surely spell disaster.
.
I am sure it was a sonic boom that I heard because everything went quiet after. Oddly time also seemed to slow down. The dogs hung in the air as I watched little crystals of ice spin like in-bound meteorites float toward my head. I had planned ahead, I was wearing my meteorite-proof glasses. Then a horrible thought raced through my mind...I wasn't wearing my fire-proof crash suit! A horrible mis-calculation that could have been prevented if only I had drunk that 3rd cup of coffee. Lesson learned I pulled back on the throttle and coasted until it was safe to throw my drag shoot. .
Then we were back to good old skijoring in one of my favorite places. #HatcherPass + #skis + #dogs = 🤘❤️👊💣💥 Don't forget to drink that third cup of coffee and do you best to enjoy the little things this weekend!

To learn more (see my previous post) about the history of indigenous people from Maine and their interactions with the colonizers from England and France start by reading some of these posts from the #sieurdemonts museum. You will be fascinated! At least I was. It is an ironic and sad thing to realize that colonizers were poorly equipped (both in knowledge and materials) to live in the what is now the United States. They were so dependent on the people that lived here to trade food, furs, tools and all kind of things in order to survive and yet, they came to destroy those same people. It is a truly dispicable history. Also interesting to learn that often indigenous people were trading with foreigners (yes, the white people were the foreigners) for luxury, not need. We didnuget a chance to check out the @abbemuseum but I hear it is fantastic. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a non-fiction book to read about history from the native people’s perspective? #AlternativeDirections

As with many towns located near awe inspiring natural areas, Bar Harbor also has a down-to-earth, connected-community vibe. What I mean is that there are people that embrace the Earth, are inspired by it and recognize our connection to it and to each other as humans. I like that kind of hippie vibe. I also like a book store that has a selection you don’t see everywhere, that shows history and society from diverse points of view, like #nativeartsbarharbor. And stores/art galleries that curate art inspired by place like #islandartisansbarharbor. @michalgrowlz and I have started a special new tradition that makes me very happy - each time we go on a backpacking/hiking adventure we buy a children’s book that is based in local tribal folklore. We read it in the outdoors and learn more about the people, the language and traditions of that place. It’s so important to honor and recognize the native people that have lived here for centuries and understand and learn from their past and present. #AlternativeDirections

One of my favorite @acadianps experiences was exploring #ottercliffs. This was such a hidden gem we might not have seen! Have you ever had that feeling when you’re traveling? ‘This place might be cool but is it worth it to drive out there? I’m tired.’ Etc.? Well, I say, check it out! For Dog’s sake you never know when you’ll be back! This is what this blog is all about. I’m glad I looked at the map and spotted the potential in this out-of-the-way stop. Wow. It was a truly spiritual, magical, and nostalgic experience. It is a place that just feels like it’s full of history. Of past sailors navigating fog-covered waters, and ancient people fishing and hunting...Peering out into the vast ocean but seeing only the grayish blue haze of evaporated water and imagining what is and what was, was...a journey! We climbed down and sat for a while, just looking out, hearing the periodic sound of a fog horn alerting that there was life out there, and that time was indeed moving forward. If you get the chance, get there early afternoon and hike from the trail, climb the rocks, bring yourself a lovely picnic and enjoy watching the fog roll in. You won’t regret it. #AlternativeDirections
