We share 97% of their DNA and have destroyed 80% of their habitat. •
The Sumatran Orang-utan is on the IUCN's critically endangered list; the last tier before extinction, due to loss of habitat. •
Dr Ian Singleton has been working with orang-utans in Sumatra for over 20yrs & is nominated for the prestigious 2018 Indianapolis Prize for animal conservation. He is the director of SOCP (the Sumatran conservation orang-utan programme) who do amazing work on all aspects of orang-utan conservation. This includes rescue and rehabilitation of illegally held pets; most have been beaten, abused & kept in filthy cages since the time they were stolen from their mothers.
Once rehabilitated these orang-utans are released into the wild & SOCP are creating 2 new viable satellite breeding populations in the hope of safe guarding the species. To date over 350 have been released into the new sites.

This young female is one of the lucky ones. Nearing the end of her rehabilitation she will soon be released into the wild. This beautiful shy yet inquisitive red haired great ape will soon be living in the forests, building her nests and foraging for fruit. The next battle is then to safe guard her environment, to stop the destruction of Sumatra's last remaining forests and protect the Leuser Ecosystem. •

@Regranned from @paulhiltonphoto - Help us keep the last wild elephants wild! After catching up with a wild herd of Sumatran elephants in the Leuser Ecosystem, I can’t explain in words how important this project is. The GPS collars will have to wait until January after several training clinics, working alongside local partners and government. It’s going to be so exciting to work out their migration routes and population. To finally start to understand these elusive forest elephants and to finally put some real conservation measures into place. Please make a donation, this project can’t more forward without your funding. Link in my bio @wildlifeasia @paintedgroup @istandwithmypack @haka_sumatra @racingextinction @sabaghilton

Credit to @paulhiltonphoto : A critically endangered Sumatra elephant feeds on plants in the Leuser Ecosystem. Elephants are a keystone species. Other animals, plants and entire ecosystems rely on them for survival. As do the elephants, so do the trees.

Elephants are known as the 'constant gardeners’ -- plants and trees rely on elephants to disperse their seeds far and wide through their dung. Elephants' large footprints act as water collectors for smaller animals.
Elephants share the same emotions and cognitive behavior as humans. They grieve for their lost loved ones, they feel fear, joy and empathy and are highly praised for their intelligence. Indonesia: as twilight descends over the lowland jungle canopy of Tangkoko, in the northeast tip of Sulawesi, tiny furry tarsiers peek out from their tree hideouts.
---------------------------------------------------- I feel like one could talk all day about environmental problems but in the end two roots link them all: overpopulation and inadequate education. Advanced countries are switching to renewable energies and increasingly avoiding single-use plastics, more people are eating a plant based diet and are growing more sensitive about the environment. What about limiting ourselves to one child? Medias don’t dare to take on this topic because it goes against the laws of capitalism. But capitalism doesn’t care about famine, or forests, or the planet. Until humanity as a whole learns to sort itself out, we will hardly ever get out of this. Middle East, Asian and African countries wish to develop as Western countries did after WWII. Except when we went through industrialization the world population was less than 3 billion, microplastics weren’t outnumbering fish in the oceans, and wildlife population numbers weren’t down by 58%. Pope Francis has rightly suggested that the problem isn’t as much in the numbers as in our consumeristic and greedy lifestyle, which is true, but we really must be realistic. Most people won’t learn and change as fast as our planetary emergency demands. So to STOP growing in numbers is the most effective and quick parachute for our global downfall. ---------------------------------------------------- #savetheplanet #wildlifeasia #wildaid #racingextinction #beforetheflood #biodiversity #noplastic #conservation #jungle #tangkoko #ActOnClimate #climatechange #conservationphotography #environment #climatejustice #climate #ocean #extinction #sulawesi #nature #green #earth #sustainability #art #wildlife #rainforest #climatechange #animals #earth #wildaid #racingextinction #rainforestactionnetwork #saveearth

Adorable Orangutans.
With the new year upon us, one of my dreams for 2018 is to see signs of continually increased momentum toward sustainability, a cultural movement toward accountability for the future, a consumer society further awakening to its power of impact through choices in daily living... more businesses built to last by creating positive change with legacy in mind. I've been doing some research on conflict production like that of palm oil. These beautiful, affectionate, intelligent creatures are fighting for their lives as their habitat is decimated so that we can have snacks. No species should be wiped from existence for fleeting convenience and pre-packaged foods. It's a tragedy we can stop. We have the power to choose where we do and do not put our money.
It's a fairly well known issue, but if you're curious about companies that use conflict palm oil and want some more indepth information on how to avoid those products, or on the conflict in general, @rainforestactionnetwork provides detailed info on their site as well as an overview of their active efforts in trying to turn this around and establish sustainable palm oil indicators and criteria.
Some day I hope to see orangutans in the wild, but for now I'll cherish these moments I got to observe and photograph them at Lowry Park Zoo on one of my first photo adventures. #love #empathy #conservation #orangutan #zoo #palmoil #rainforestactionnetwork #animalsofinstagram #animalphotography #tampa #sustainable #sustainableliving #lowry #2018 #environmentalism #rainforest

Update: Notes from the field. Did I just say rhino 🦏 instead of elephant 🐘? The forest elephants of the Leuser Ecosystem are one of the last populations of forest elephants that hold both native ranges and their social systems in the way they have existed since before people inhabited the islands.

This project is directed at channeling funds to the simple step of determining how the elephants live so we can plan on how to best protect them. Home ranges, territory overlaps between families and herd viability are all top of the list. We need to devote more energy to training and demonstrating how to do this in January. We finish the elephant-collaring program and line the rangers up to better manage their elephants. More importantly we give them the data analysis tools that we’ve learnt in Central Africa so they don’t have to start from scratch.

This is a rare opportunity to help an even more rare elephant species get the foundation they need to survive in this ecosystem.

The interactive nature of forest elephants means they influence the daily habits of hundreds of species throughout the forests they live in. From full canopy trees to amphibians on the floor, all are directly benefiting from the pretense we set here. Protecting the ecosystem’s flow and interactions is as important as protecting the land it sits on. Without those interactions the land simply stops harboring these species.

This is one of the greatest projects of our generation as it pertains to elephants and we have the opportunity to set the Precedent. Link in @paulhiltonphoto bio, make a donation for Christmas 🎄🐘 @wildlifeasia @paintedgroup @istandwithmypack @haka_sumatra @racingextinction @sabaghilton

@Regranned from @paulhiltonphoto - Intense eyes! Every few seconds this critically endangered Sumatra elephant would have a good look at me and then move her head to place a leaf over her eye to hide, then she’d move back out to have another look, she was as old as the trees, blending in to her surroundings so well, Leuser Ecosystem, Sumatra, Indonesia. Help us protect these elephants, so little is know about these elusive forest dwellers and how they interact with the system. A critically endangered Sumatran elephant feeds on plants in the Leuser Ecosystem.

Photo by @Jayaprakash_bojan | After over 11,000 photo submissions from around the world, our panel of judges has named the 2017 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year! Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan of Singapore is this year's grand prize winner for his stunning shot of an enormous male orangutan, waist-deep in a river, shyly peeking from behind a tree. Our judges were impressed by how the poignant image spoke to the impact deforestation is having on the habitat of this critical endangered species.
