Been a while since wearing the 1970 61GS. Love the funky case lines and edges of this reference 6156-8000, unpolished and intact. Japanese domestic model with Kanji day wheel! Mounted on samurai blue crocodile strap.

New Watch Alert: The vintage Seiko Chronograph “Pogue” 6139-6005. Let me first state the obvious (to me, anyway): This is an awesome watch! From the sunburst yellow dial, to the red hands, the blue/red bezel, and the case shape, the watch is an unapologetic tsunami of 1970s style! It essentially demands you to wear bell-bottom pants and add words like “groovy,” “far out,” “foxy,” and “be there or be square” to your lexicon! With production from 1969 to 1979, the Pogue (600X) series is vast, with a dizzying array of cases, dials, bracelets, and calibers. I’ll detail all that in due time, but, for this post, I’m going to cover the reason why the piece has become so famous: Colonel Willian Reid Pogue. Born in Oklahoma in 1930, Pogue enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951. He joined NASA in 1966 as part of the Apollo program, where he served as a support crew member for several missions, and was assigned Command Module pilot for Apollo 19. That mission was canceled, so Pogue transferred to the Skylab Orbital Workshop program. As the pilot for Skylab 4, he was in space from Nov 16, 1973 to Feb 8, 1974, the longest period to that date. And here’s the clincher for WISes: Pogue brought onboard his personal watch, a certain yellow-dialed Seiko chronograph he purchased from the Post Exchange at Ellington Air Force Base, making it the first automatic chrono in space. His watch—ref. 6139-6002—is now considered a “True Pogue,” the most recognizable trait of which are the words “Water 70M Resist” written at 9 o’clock. As such, my 6005, while technically “A Pogue,” is not a “True Pogue.” 🤓 The Seiko connection to Colonel Pogue was unveiled only in 2007, creating much frisson in the watch community. Pogue, in fact, sold his watch, let’s call this one “THE Pogue,” in an auction in 2008 and donated all the proceeds to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. He passed away in 2014. This barely scratches the surface of this watch’s history. Much more to come soon. Also, many thanks to my friend Seth @hubcityvintage for the care and expertise. Current soundtrack: Moby’s “We Are All Made of Stars.” 🎧 Good morning, #WatchFam! ☕️
