Pictures 1-5: A 15 minute walk down a rather slippery road, this living root bridge is located just 2 kms from Mawlynnong. To reach the site it is a 900 m trek, approx 500-600 steps (roundtrip). It is a simple trek with minimal exhaustion but is a good enough warm up of sorts for the Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Visit this site during winters as it gives an eerie ‘Monster Movie’ feel.

Pictures 6-10: The Double Decker Living Root Bridge of Sohra (aka Cherapunjee) is one of the few double decker root bridges. It is a 7km trek,7200 steps and the whole trek can take upto 4-6 hours (depending on the time you spend at the site). More info and trek videos will be up soon.

Living root bridges are a form of tree shaping common in the southern part of the Northeast Indian state of Meghalaya. They are handmade from the aerial roots of Rubber Fig Trees (Ficus elastica ) by the Khasi and Jaintia peoples of the mountainous terrain along the southern part of the Shillong Plateau. Root bridges have also been observed in the Indian state of Nagaland.
The local Khasi people do not know when or how the tradition of living root bridges started. Inventive members of the Khasi tribe have trained them to grow from the roots of ancient rubber trees, native to the northeast region. The root bridges provide a stable alternative to wooden bridges, which decay and get destroyed during the lengthy monsoon seasons.

It takes around 15 years for a new root bridge to become strong enough to bear the weight of people crossing it. However, it will continue to grow and strengthen even more over time. Some of the bridges are believed to be hundreds of years old, although no one knows their exact age. Their tangled webs of roots are almost eerie in nature and wouldn't look out of place in a fantasy world.
Though the ‘Generations By Hand’ method is the most common and genuine method of building root bridges, the ‘Bamboo or Wood Scaffold’ technique is getting popular.
These are truly a great example of ‘Man Made Marvels’
