Since listening and studying hours on end I decided to implement speed training and tempo work 3-4 x’s a week back into my programming. Not only are sprints the king of having a strong core, but they are one of the main reason I have the abbs I do without doing any sit-ups or crunches or any core work other than Heavy squats , deadlifts and Olympic lifts. Throughout my life while training I maintain such a lean physique of 5-8% Body fat while gaining muscle and strength because of sprints, tempo and prime mover strength and power work/drills. The people(bodybuilders) that think you need to gain 30-40lbs of more in the offseason and do 1000’s of reps of “core work” are full of shit and are frankly in an old school state of mind(if it ain’t broke don’t fix it mentality/trusting what’s worked in the past, and not willing to test new theories to get results). I’m sorry to those people that gain that much weight and walk around like a bloated, inflammed, hypertensive heart attack waiting to happen. It isn’t healthy nor is it attractive. You can learn a lot by jusy looking at blood work, blood pressure, body composition tests, and VO2 tests. The number prove it with study after study it’s not ideal let alone needed to gain that much fat to gain muscle. If you want to be a beast year round, and walk around at a comfortable weight that you can function properly at, that means sleep without acid reflux, not snoring or waking up not being able to breath, not being winded walking up a flight of stairs because you are cheating with your meals 3 or more times a week. It’s science guys, it’s simple and it’s backed up, intermittent fasting and low level of Ketosis actually preserves muscle mass and spears muscular protein allowing the body to burn excess energy storage(body fat), so if you properly carb cycle and diet throughout the offseason you will not only look great but you’ll feel great inside and outside. Meaning you’ll feel physically, physiologically and psychologically: mentally, emotionally amazing. So don’t fall for the trap of “BULKING” in the offseason that so many body builders do.
