African buffalos belong to the Big Five and also to the animals that walk the savanna in a constantly miserable mood. They are quite aggressive and extremely resentful too. If a hunter does not kill a buffalo at once but only hurts it, he can be sure the buffalo will attack him and kill him when it gets the chance. That is why early big game hunters were particularly afraid of these bovine animals. They are bold and strong creatures with a weight of up to 1000 kilograms. Even adult lions are very respectful of buffalos when they meet them.
Although there are lions that regularly hunt buffalos, they usually hunt in a pride with combined forces and they normally pick out the weakest buffalo of a herd.
What makes the buffalos especially interesting is the fact that they protect each other from predators and help each other to survive. If, for example, a buffalo is attacked and brought down by lions, usually the herd forms, attacks the lions and tries to help the assaulted buffalo. If it is not severely injured, it can escape the lions’ claws with the help of the herd. It would not cross the minds of any other prey to defend members of their herd against lions. They usually would run away and watch from a distance how their herd mate is eaten up by the lions.
This photo was made at the Chobe National Park in Botswana. The oxpeckers on the old buffalo’s head sit in a triangular formation, building an optic triangle. The shape of the buffalo’s head can also be seen as an optic triangle. This creates a very harmonic tension and the nice light from the rising sun is very good for the picture as well. The old buffalo’s horn is broken on the left side which makes the old bull look even more charismatic. The horns of the buffalos usually break during fights with rivals.

I regularly encounter Day Octopus (Octopus cyanea) when snorkelling, but this is the first time one has taken an exception to being photographed, by squirting its ink and disappearing #wildlifeplanet #seychelles #underwaterphotography #cephalopod #octopus #marinelife #naturephotography #ikelite
