Day 16 Vienna

In 1679, the bubonic plague tore through Vienna as it did in the rest of Europe. Death toll spiralled, and corposes were just tossed into the catacombs under St Stephen Cathedral, which then became a virtual, stinking dumping ground for the deceased. In the same year, the Habsburg emperor Leopold I vowed to erect a memorial column if the plague would end. Managed by different sculptors and architects in different periods, the column began as a modest, unassuming wooden column and through various influences became the extravagantly embellished high Baroque monument it is today.

The column showed the Holy Trinity accompanied by nine angels, but from this point today, however I see, I imagine a hill of skulls and contorted, splintered bodies piling up and suspending themselves magically into a shape of a column. The imagery may be offensive, but history seems to nod in agreement.
