Today was Kimmie Jones Day (aka Kimmie's 35th birthday). I was reminded to keep up our black and white card tradition (we always made sure that our cards to one another were equal parts black and white)... and, of course, the monkeys made it even better! Here's to you, @kimmiejonesin...headed to bed listening to our MJ theme song! #doesntmatterifyoureblackorwhite
I love unicorns (actually, I am one!), and of course, I LOVE Starbucks...I can't say I love the combination of the two, except when it comes to a costume! I originally wasn't gonna "do Halloween" this year, but felt the presence of @kimmiejonesin telling me I better not skip out on her favorite moment of the year. Shout outs to my dear friends that helped me pull together this last minute costume (complete with clouds). Continuing to do you proud, Kimmie! #unicorn #unicornfrappuccino #unicornfab #halloween #halloween2017
Last night I had the incredible opportunity to represent the millions of Americans who are fighting to #SaveMedicaid on CNN at a Town Hall debate. Moments like these continue to be surreal, to say the least... not because I'm covered in the media, but because there is still a need for us to fight for what is right. As my brothers and sisters of @nationalADAPT continue to speak up and fight for us all, I'm grateful for opportunities to play a part.
My question for Senator Cassidy, one half of the proposed Graham/Cassidy bill, was as follows: "Senator Cassidy, if Medicaid funding gets shifted to the states and they cap and cut Medicaid, optional services like home and community based assistance – which currently allow me to live and thrive independently – will be first on the chopping block. How will you ensure that disabled Americans and seniors get the life essential care they need, especially when many states already have long wait lists and an increased need as Baby Boomers age?" I honestly wish he wouldn't have stuttered/ hesitated. I wish he wouldn't have referred to our inclusion "on page 100" of the bill. I wish he would've had a logical answer, but, no... Clearly, there's no concern for us... and so, we fight! #protectourcare #SaveMedicaid #ourightsarehumanrights
Was privileged to spend one-on-one time celebrating the DOPENESS that is @kerigray90! Every time I'm with her, I'm more and more in awe of the incredible woman that she already is... not that she's becoming, but that she IS. Although divine intervention assigned us as mentor/mentee years ago, there's absolutely nothing better than watching the student surpass the teacher. She's a history-maker, for sure. I'm so grateful to call her sister. Happy birthday, and LOTS OF LOVE, my dear!
When THE Mr. Reggie Wells (Oprah's personal makeup artist) recognizes you and asks who did your makeup because he loves it...why, you're speechless! He nearly lost it when I told him I did it myself. He's my new BFF! (And, if this is your first time hearing of Reggie Wells... for shame!) #makeuplover #creativelifehappylife #makeupjunkie
When you're given less than an hour to write a speech for a Charlottesville-focused vigil in DC, you find a journal that speaks to you and you get her done (with help from great friends). I specifically was asked to speak on hate crimes against people with disabilities, and at the suggestion of @rcoke54, ended with a quote from #FierceFannieLou: "There is one thing you've got to learn about our movement. Three people is better than no people."
While continuing to advocate on a national level in an effort to #SaveMedicaid, I have more quietly been continuing my individual fight to keep my personal care services. Why have I been quiet?! Because the big spider web has grown so undiscernible that most days I can't put it into words. This morning was a perfect example, as I found myself sitting before a judge as the "appellant" against the state of Maryland. All of this is stuff I never wanted to do... as the consummate peacemaker, protests, news stories, and court hearings were never situations I would've chosen on my own. But, if anything, this push out of my comfort zone has proven that I am, indeed, a fighter! I will win... for us all! (P.S. I will receive the verdict in the mail) #ourlives #ourlivesmatter
One of the highlights of my experience this weekend was chatting with Leader Pelosi not only about my speech and healthcare rights, but her participation in ADA week events, like the NCIL Rally. So grateful for her unwavering support. The other highlight was not captured in photos, but in my memory, as I looked into the crowd and saw so many faces of those that I care about and that care about me. Your support means the MOST! You know who you are...
I'm taking the stage again...who knows what things will look like by Saturday, but one thing is for certain... our lives are on the line! Join me and many others (rain or shine) as we rally on Saturday at 6:30 pm on Freedom Plaza in DC and continue to fight. There are also events occurring across the country, so be sure to visit ourlivesontheline.org. If you're coming to the Plaza, I'm first on the speaker list. Would LOVE to see you there! #ourlives #cantstopwontstop #savemedicaid
Happy 27th anniversary, ADA! Days like today provide the fuel that we all need to keep up the good fight. Spending my day with history makers like Yoshiko Dart, who was fighting for the rights of people with disabilities before I was thought of, and young leaders who are proudly continuing to carry the torch, like my lil' sis @kerigray90, are strong reminders of the success of the past and promise of the future. Makes it all worth it! #ADA27 #civilrightsarehumanrights
Spent my morning marching and fighting with disability rights leaders from across the world. As we marched, we shouted, "This is what democracy looks like!" As we stood in front of the Capitol, we shouted "Kill the Bill!" WE WILL KEEP FIGHTING! (Shirt c/o the Disability Visibility Project reads "Our Existence is Resistance.") #savemedicaid #ADAPTandRESIST #mymedicaidmatters
Spending my #tbt and #fbf reminiscing on my incredible Carpé Diem birthday weekend. From comedy show at the Improv, to the street car, homemade pies, and the incredible folks that joined me...my actual Friday birthday was beyond phenomenal. After 10 years in DC, it was lovely to rediscover my city by doing things I'd never done. Here's to SEIZING THE DAY!
I intentionally waited until today, my BIRTHDAY, to debut my new masterpiece that I got a couple of weeks ago. When @kimmiejonesin got her "pretty lung" tattoo (because, according to her, she had crappy ones), I told her that I would get one as well, so that we could be "lung twins." Didn't realize she wouldn't be here to see it. Each time we had moments with health issues, and life issues, we reminded one another to "breathe." So, this weekend is my "Carpé Diem" weekend, in honor of Kimmie. I will be doing things that I've put off doing, for lack of time or company. This has been an admittedly difficult year, but I'm thrilled for a new year, an opportunity to SEIZE everyday! Thanks to those who've come along for the journey.
