For #2018 I’m resolving to continue old habits by signing up for my 7th #summitforsomeone climb! In July I will journey to Washington State for a fundraising climb of Mt. Baker to help @big_city_mountaineers provide wilderness mentoring trips for the youth of our nation. It’s an honor to announce that @steve_yocom will be joining the climb and that we will be documenting the endeavor through the @appalachian_adventure_company! In order to raise funds we plan to host a gear giveaway of epic proportions!!! We hope you will consider becoming a fundraiser by joining us on the climb, donating to our gear giveaway or supporting our fundraising efforts with a donation. #happynewyear let’s make this one count!
‘Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.’ Another quote from Martin Luther King Jr. because his words are so inspiring.

We've got big goals for 2018, including: getting 1,000 under-resourced youth outdoors! Here's what else we're working on: • Reconstruct the Boundary Waters Basecamp and offering overnight camp opportunities to youth from the Twin Cities
• Increase the number of youth who advance from BCM overnight camps and week-long expeditions to outdoor leadership opportunities • Increase the effectiveness of BCM programming by learning from program evaluations and implementing best practices in the sector

"I needed that, because after those trips I immediately buckled down in school. I used to be lazy. But, after BCM, I got everything done before it was due and was able to actually graduate a year early. Now, I’m headed off to college.” Madison was a BCM youth that returned multiple summers to head out on expedition. Look like fun? This is a photo of the BCM youth playing a game called 'Gems." It's used to teach goal setting and teamwork.
The group chooses objects that represent their goals – either while on a trip or while back at home. They then put the object (goals) a body length outside of a predetermined space they cannot leave or touch the ground outside of. The group then supports each other as they reach for and retrieve their objects without touching the ground.

"I watched as one teen transformed from a timid observer into an assertive trail navigator after being handed a map and compass. There was nothing magic about the piece of paper covered in topographic lines. He saw the faith and confidence that our BCM educator placed in him. He remembered the lessons in backcountry navigation and he was reminded that he had the full support of the group he was leading." A mentor from @thermarest joined us on a BCM youth expedition this summer. Read about his journey... https://thermarestblog.com/camping-change-big-city-mountaineers/
