{The Ekka Ferris wheel}
1915 v 2017: The concept of Ekka show thrills has certainly changed over the years but the Ferris wheel remains a popular and much-loved attraction in sideshow alley.

SHOW BAGS! (or sample bags) - as as a child, that's what it was all about. Our #Ekka kicks off today, and just like decades ago, children will be lining up to get their show bags. What was your favourite as a child? Bertie Beetle is still up there as a fave πŸ’•πŸ’•

#TBT #ThrowbackThursday {THEN & NOW} c1936: Thousands of cars cross Indooroopilly’s Walter Taylor Bridge every day. But they are also passing over parts of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. As Colin O’Connor’s 1998 book Walter Taylor Bridge explains, wire ropes put to work during the Harbour Bridge’s construction were reused as suspension cables. The bridge was opened as a toll road in 1936, with collectors housed in apartments in the pylons. The toll was removed in 1965. Last year, Brisbane City Council bought land to allow for a future duplication of the bridge.

1909: The Jubilee History of Queensland recorded what it was like to shop in the early 1900s. Grocer H V Birchley had two outlets, one at West End and the other at Wynnum South, both crammed floor to ceiling with goods that staff would pack to order and then deliver to customers. While stocking our pantry these days involves picking our own products off supermarket shelves and ferrying them home, the advent of online shopping has seen a return to the ways of old.

{THEN & NOW}
1872, Hamilton Hill: Would you be comfortable spending time in this living room? The Dickson family (pictured) was. Businessman and politician Sir James Dickson started building Toorak House, the castle-like mansion at the top of Hamilton Hill, in 1856, continually expanding it until 1910, adding a storey and additional wings. He filled the house with treasures from the family’s travels. That’s much like the subject of our cover story, stylist Kara Rosenlund, although the results of their collections are vastly different.

c1920: The more things change, the more they stay the same. Mrs Agnes McConnell and Agnes Playford (above) admire the view from the beach in front of an undeveloped Noosa Heads. The clothing may have changed (and the facial expressions), but families still flock to this slice of holiday heaven. Enjoying a winter sunbake last month was Victorian family and friends (left), Sienna Townsend-Sim, Ceci Roland, Lucy Townsend-Smith, Hamish Schmalkuche and Daisy Ronald.
