Yesterday the Yes 2 Renewables collective joined upper house MP Fiona Patten at the @hawkersbeer solar-powered brewery in Reservoir to toast to Victoria's renewable energy future. Hawkers co-founder Mazen Hajjar said putting 190 solar panels on the roof isn't just about business, it's about protecting the planet.

The Victorian Renewable Energy Target will soon be voted on in state parliament's upper house. This vital piece of climate change legislation is something all parties can support.

And seriously can you really beat solar-powered beer? #renewables #craftbeer #reservoir #melbourne

Meet Berish, who's signed up to #WalkThisWay on just a few weeks on October 7th, when we walk 15km across Melbourne to launch our new #SustainableCitiea campaign and raise $10,000 for Friends of the Earth! Berish says: "Melbourne is my home town and it's where I'm planning of spending most of my life. So I want to see our government create policies that help make it thrive. That means no big new roads, more shared open space and parklands, smart planning that includes climate resilience, and investment in public transport and bike infrastructure to create a more connected community." Meet Jemila & Rachel, two of the big reasons we'll #WalkThisWay on October 7th! They just finished walking the whole of the 15km walk, putting the final touches on plans for the day! Jemila (our fundraising coordinator) says: "I wanted to create an event that brought our community together and raise awareness in the city about the impacts of climate change and what we can do together to make a difference. So often in Melbourne I think we can feel isolated from what's going on elsewhere in the country and the world, but the more time I spend working at Friends of the Earth the more I believe that the power to make change comes directly from our communities. By walking together my hope is that we can learn more about what makes Melbourne amazing, learn from the mistakes of colonisation and discover ways we can make this city more sustainable for the future!" Rachel (our sustainable cities campaigner) says: "How we connect to people and places is what makes our cities living, breathing, functional spaces. I'm really fired up about transforming our transport system. Our transport sector is the 2nd biggest source of carbon emissions in Victoria, unless we start thinking about (and changing!) how we move around our city, we are going to fail to tackle climate change effectively. I'm so excited to #WalkThisWay across Melbourne and come up with some great community solutions!

Friends of the Earth stands in solidarity with the LGBTQI+ community in the face of this attack on your rights. We also recognise that there are many other significant struggles that LGBTQI+ identifying people face daily because of your gender or sexual identity.

We proudly hung this banner from our Collingwood office this afternoon, on the day many people would have received the postal vote materials in the mail.
We have chosen to include the trans flag (in the blue pink and white) and the brown and black stripes on the rainbow to acknowledge the loss of life to AIDS (black) and the ongoing struggles faced by queer people of colour.

Enrol to vote or update your details by midnight tonight. http://www.aec.gov.au/enrol/

We condemn the government's postal vote that will be both non-binding and non-compulsory. We believe the postal vote provides a platform for hate speech and violence towards the queer community and we are deeply concerned about the impact it will have for our staff, volunteers, members, friends and the broader community.

Whilst we strongly condemn a postal vote on this matter, if it goes ahead, we will be voting yes loudly.

(5/5)That is when we decided to move to the start of the cycle, to the core of the issue. Instead of being wide and shallow, we went narrow and deep. So after we spent 8 years working on the federal level for climate refugees, we decided to focus down to the local level and the two things we can do locally is stop burning coal and shifting to renewable energy. We can stop contributing to the problem of climate change. Let's ban fracking and let's get Victoria working in the game for renewables and there were two things we had to do then. One was the government had terrible anti- wind laws, so it was almost impossible to get turbines built anywhere so we needed to rewrite those laws and the second thing was we needed a target to actually drive the development of the renewable energy. So we set up the campaign to stop gas drilling in Victoria 6 years ago and to limit the use of coal and we set up Yes2Renewables 3 years ago. That was the campaign that led to the idea to VRET (Victoria Renewable Energy Target). We campaigned with everything we had for the VRET. We got a permanent ban on fracking for gas.

Then after three years, we saw the Andrews government commit Victoria to 25 percent renewables by 2020 and 40 percent by 2025.
WE ARE BRINGING HOME THE VRET!

(4/5) So, when we lost the campaign, I felt like I have let them down, I felt like I failed and I felt terrible and I felt responsible as, living in a rich nation, I have a huge impact on the climate. I consume 18 times more than what an average Indonesian consumes. We are a rich country, we have a high personal consumption and a very large carbon footprint. I have a lot more carbon debt to the atmosphere than most people on the planet. We are causing climate change, yet the poor are suffering from the climate change impacts without causing the problem. It's not rocket science to figure out climate change, you know. It's simple physics, you burn coal and other fossil fuels then we have climate change that then leads to displacement. So we kind of wasted 8 years, and I thought Oh shit, what do we do now? We had started to work with people in Papua New Guinea who were already moving from the Carteret islands to the island of Bougainville. They have to get on motorboats and go 120KM away to live because of their islands are going underwater. They are climate refugees and there was no way we could find a place in Australia for them because we couldn't create an intake program for them. They weren't asylum seekers in the classic sense, because no one is being oppressed or being marginalised because of their religion or whatever, but they were losing their homes because of the lifestyles of the United States and Australia and the other rich countries. So what do we do now?

(3/5) " I joined the Friends of the Earth 28 years ago and about 15 years ago we realised that climate change was already happening and that it will be the poorest people will be the most impacted. We did some research and we realised that up to 150 million people will be displaced by climate changes if we don't act. We spent 8 years trying to get Australia to create a new intake program for climate refugees for people from our region, from mainland Asia and the Pacific, and we got very close to securing that but then things went off the rails. There was a change in Minister and it all fell apart, completely fell apart, 8 years of our lives work evaporated. At the time Kevin Rudd was the prime minister. There was so much difficulty in convincing the various actors – green groups, aid agencies, asylum seeker advocates and the government – that this needed to happen. We argued that we needed to keep existing intake programs for refugees and also create a new intake which is just for climate refugees from India, Bangladesh, Fiji, Philippines, because of people being displaced from their homes and they have nowhere to go.

(2/5) "The minute you have that realisation, it leads you to more realisations. It’s a journey, the minute you start to think about the state of the world, the minute you stop being oblivious to it, you look at the world and you realise that everything is connected. So the reason we are cutting down trees primarily for paper is because the industry has got very comfortable doing that, and they have convinced governments to say that this is okay. Any government that was really serious about the long term benefits to the community of using our resources wouldn't be allowing it. It's not very logical, because you have to assume that the government makes logical decisions and then you realise, well, in the case of forestry decision, they’ve locked in a pulp industry pretending to be a timber industry – this is not sensible and it is also kind of negligent.Β  So when you have the realisation, you have to take the next step. We need to stop this from happening. That means I need to do something."

(1/5)"I can't imagine doing anything else. It was just obvious, if you look out the window you can see what's going on, you know. I grew up in Melbourne and as a teenager I started to get into hiking and bush walking and you go places, to get to a nice place where you wanna camp, you have to go up through the areas that have been cut and I just felt like "wow, we are cutting down the trees". If you go to the East of Melbourne you can see a lot of logging going on, beautiful forest being destroyed. Then you ask the question "what are those trees being cut down for?" And when you ask that question and you find out that a bulk of it is going towards paper. And the minute you use your brain you realise you don't need trees to make paper, there are so many things that you can use; sugarcane, hemp, the list goes on. So why are we cutting down 100 - 300 year old trees, just to turn into paper? They are mostly being converted into paper, not even timber but being wasted on paper, it's stupid you know"

(3/3) β€œCommunity members from the Seymour and Broadford area called for help. Anti-wind farm campaigners had arrived in the region and started spreading misinformation about a local wind farm project, including pseudo-scientific claims that wind farms could make people sick.
It was a game-changer moment and my first community campaign. FoE's Yes 2 Renewables campaign worked side-by-side with the BEAM-Mitchell Environment Group to turn the tide. We distributed 20,000 mythbusting flyers, held a dozen 'listening post' stalls at farmers markets, and held a community forum in Seymour. The combination of these tactics helped dampen the nonsense and saw a wind farm in the region get the green light.
It was this campaign that shaped my practice. Since 2012 we've supported communities in Woodend, Anglesea, Yackandandah, and wind workers in Portland. And it was this approach that was central to our three and a half year push for a Victorian Renewable Energy Target which saw the Andrews government commit Victoria to 25 percent renewables by 2020 and 40 percent by 2025.
WE ARE BRINGING HOME THE VRET!
