Meet Dr. Chris Thomson a platic surgean and his patient Desinord, age 23 who is an auto mechanic. The day prior to Team Broken Earth's arrival, Desinord's right thumb was amputated in an accident while working on a car. Dr. Chris and the team were able to move his index finger over and replace the missing thumb. By giving Desinord his grip back, he will be able to continue to support his family and return to the work he loves once he has healed. #TeamBrokenEarth #HospitalBernardMevs #thumbsup #changinglives #OneTeam
In addition to long hours in our operating rooms, Team Broken Earth took time to teach pathology (top left) and orthopedic techniques (bottom left) to local students. The team also taught basic first aid and CPR to our patients family members and gave each of them a first aid kit to take home. #TeamBrokenEarth #HospitalBernardMevs #educationforall #passingonknowledge #OneTeam
Welcome back Team Broken Earth Saskatoon! This team consists of 22 members and will be performing orthopedic, general and plastic surgeries this week in addition to helping in the hospital. The team was very surprised to be picked up from the airport in style with our new bus donated by H.L. Construction S.A.

We are very grateful to H.L. Construction S.A. for their donation of this beautiful bus. We were all very excited when Philippe Lerouge the Directeur General Adjoint delivered it to the hospital. He is pictured above with the Twins Dr. Bitars. HBM is always at the ready to assist in the care of their staff, so when this bus became available they wanted to donate it to say thank you to the hospital and volunteers for that outstanding care. #H.L.Construction S.A. #HospitalBernardMevs #givingback #OneTeam
We would like to thank Mr. Stanley Handal of MSC Trading for his generous donation of crutches. Here you can see our lead Physical Therapist, Samuel, happily getting some crutches from the warehouse. He carefully measures the fit for Sherline, a Med Surg B patient who injured her left leg in a car accident. After a demonstration and some coaching, she is up on her feet and on her path to recovery! @stanleyhandal @mscplus #MSCTrading #HospitalBernardMevs #generosity #makingadifference #PhysicalTherapy #OneTeam

Update from Haiti...
Last December we found little Woodjina laying in a hospital bed in Haiti. She had infections deep in the bones of both thighs and could not walk. The infections were causing fever in her body and her hip was displaced. Attached to the bottom of one leg was a rope made from abs Dave attached to an old Coke bottle filled with water. This was the traction keeping one leg straight. Woodjina arrived at the Bernard Mevs hospital as the team was preparing to leave last year. She was the very last patient operated on. Her legs were in such bad shape that Dr. Durham was scooping puss out of her femur and during the surgery the head of her femur where it connects with her hip came off in Dr. Durham's hand. The operation that Dr. Durham performed on Woodjina in December of last year undoubtedly saved her life. "I'm a hand surgeon. It's a rare thing that I get to operate where it saves someone's life." Durham said.
Today Woodjina walked into the orthopaedic clinic with her aunt. Her smile was absolutely radiant. The intervention of the Northern Arizona Volunteer Medical Corps group is changing lives in Haiti and in the case of Woodjina is giving a little girl who was on the verge of death not only a chance of life but in time to be the matriarch of her own family.
Woodjina is truly the reason that we travel to Haiti.
Vanessa is a Haitian-American Occupational Therapist from Virginia that volunteered with Project Medishare this past August. She worked with the physical therapy team at Hospital Bernard Mevs, who are always eager to learn new techniques, as well as show off their own. Vanessa told us the highlights of her trip included delicious Haitian food, bonding with hospital staff, and being able to use her Creole to get to know patients better. Thank you Vanessa for donating your time, skills and knowledge to the people of Haiti!

Earlier this year, we launched a neurosurgery fellowship program in partnership with Hospital Bernard Mevs, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami Children’s Hospital, the State University of Haiti and the Haitian Ministry of Health. The goal of the three year program is to build local capacity by improving access to neurosurgical care. Dr. Yudy Lafortune, born and raised in Port-au-Prince, was selected as the program’s first fellow. Head over to the news section of our website to read our Q&A with Dr. Lafortune and learn more about him.#toprankrepost

Meet Dr Rivette Monaly- the new Chief Medical Officer of Hospital Bernard Mevs. After 3 years as CMO I am proud to hand over the torch to a wonderful Haitian physician and dear friend. I have been immensely privileged to work amongst such an amazing team of Haitian staff and volunteers over the last 7 years in Haiti and our local staff have taught me so much about Medicine, Haitian culture and how to be a good human being in tough circumstances. Today I handed over the whiteboard pen with an equal mixture of happiness and sadness. #oneweekleft #happysad #mapsonjew #ayiticherie

Thank you #teambrokenearth!
Mèsi anpil! Thank you very much!
We are thankful for this beautiful Gesture. As we advance in trying to be the best hospital in Port-Au-Prince, we would not be able to advance without the help of our community. From the unfortunate situations we have encountered at the hospital, to a simple smile on our patients' faces, we always strive to deliver with efficiency. Our mission is to save as many lives as possible on a daily basis. It is obvious to say that healthcare in Haiti is lacking, but saving lives is important enough to try to find solutions to our problems. This gesture will help us move forward in so many ways. We can't thank you enough.#hopitalbernardmevs #healthcare#MedicalNeedsInHaiti #savinglives #jointhemovement #grateful @lolfest@dreampromo@lakayit
Welcome to our newly renovated and updated Spinal Cord Injuries at Hospital Bernard Mevs. It is the only one in that has neurosurgeons available 24/7 and highly trained Spinal Cord Injury. We are so grateful to our supporters for helping us make this happen- when we work in such beautiful surroundings we are capable of amazing things. Here is Miss Aspelly our charge nurse and the hospitals CMO Jo Just before the patients moved in. Today in our Pediatric Unit, we are treating 4 little hydrocephalus children. 1 of them has been abandonned by his mother and is therefore under our care. As you know, we are the only hospital in Haiti which offers treatment for this condition. We need your help in order to be able to keep providing our best services to these children who depend on us. Please Donate. #hopitalbernardmevs #betterhealthcare #strongertogether #hydrocephalus #haiti
Meet Nouselie Edmond. She is a newborn who came to us at Hôpital Bernard Mevs on June 12th with septic shock. Doctors say she may have developed Hydrocephalus from complications caused by her illness. Her mother is unable to provide for her care and we need help to cover her expenses. Any donations will help save lives like hers Donations are being received at @caribbeansupermarketsa and @maisonhandal #hopitalbernardmevs #strongertogether #WeCare
Did you know? June 13th is "International Albinism Awareness Day". On June 14th and 15th, in an effort to commemorate this day, Hôpital Bernard Mevs was the proud host of the oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) clinic led by Dr. Brian Morrison, a dermatologist from the University of Miami Hospital.
Dr. Morrison and his team successfully saw a total of 65 albinism patients of which 13 received surgical intervention. We are thankful to them and to the Haitian team that led this clinic.
Special thanks to James Germain who led the advertising campaign, to the General Hospital and HBM doctors, especially to HBM's Dr. Jeanty and to the Wound Care administration who all came together and contributed their efforts to make this clinic possible!

Did you know? Hydrocephaly is not the only children's program that is dear to us here at Hospital Bernard Mevs. The Cleft Palate program is equally important to us. This week, with the help of our very own Miss Magguy, we were able to get the Smile Network, a famous and specialized team from Minesotta, to come and operate on 42 of our little patients with a cleft palate/lip. We are proud to be the only hospital in Haiti to participate in bringing a Smile to these children's faces. As you might expect, these programs are very costly to the hospital and Your Donations and Support are crucial for their continued success. #strongertogether #WeCare #hopitalbernardmevs #yourcontributionmatters #Haiti #betterhealthcare
