On Tuesday night, I finally was able to finish this Christmas tree skirt that I started the math and templates for back in July! Day job, expected surgery for me and an unexpected surgery for hubby all wreaked havoc with my deadline, but now it’s onto the piecing of the backing, quilting and then binding this so the final owner can perhaps use it under her tree this year! #modafabrics #berrymerry #konacotton #robertkaufman #robertkaufmancottonlinen #aurifil #aurifilthread #thereindeeraremyfavorite #stillhatemath
Dear “Stranger Things” Prop Master: This model of a school bus with a flat front was not introduced into service until 1987 (and even then was not widely used until 1991 because the first generation had supply issues) while Season 2 takes place in 1984–and they most certainly never had white roofs then (not until after 1992). Surely there is at least one front engine model still in existence in running order in this country like the one from Sixteen Candles (or you just don’t shoot school bus scenes). —Signed, A Child of the Eighties Who Isn’t Going To Fall for a Banana in the Tailpipe (or a blatantly period-incorrect bus) #strangerthings #stillafuntripofashow #thosekidsareawesome #bobbetterstaynice
Took the day off from the day job due to school being closed for local elections—which meant some quality time with the mini-me at my office’s Fall Harvest event for kids (instead of a Halloween one, thankfully) with activities and candy for the tiny humans—and the adults too. Was very cathartic to join in for coloring and the wee one was excited to be able to hang our masterpieces on the fridge together at home. However, that activity is when I noticed that the Avengers “dancing” pants I made are now floods on the kid—time to turn them into shorts! She was also excited to spy an owl on the way to the activities and took it as an opportunity to remind me once more that she asked Santa for yet another owl friend. She’d better grow up wise for all the paraphernalia in our house (but they are cool/cute critters). #wisheverydaycouldbelikethis #alsowishitwasacceptabletocoloratmydesk #ormaybeapetowlatmydeskinstead
Accidental art: pin sculpture. Was sewing like mad and tossing pins into my magnetic bowl with abandon for a few hours until I happened to catch a glimpse out of the corner of my eye when the tallest pin caught the light. Didn’t realize I had inadvertently sculpted a Christmas tree out of pins while working on the tree skirt—but it seems rather fitting, no? #lovehappyaccidents #almostdonewiththistopfinally #berrymerry #modafabric #tistheseasonsoon
My @carolynfriedlander obsession week continues as my order of desperately needed rope bowls arrived from @katspawsvt and she included some F8s of #botanicsfabric with them that I am missing from my collection (which is what happens when you foolishly fall in love with an OOP line YEARS after it’s been released and have a crazy amazing idea for the line—stupid heart)! These rope bowls are the PERFECT sizes for my thread catching, HST and paper piece trimmings, and general attempts at keeping my sewing area from becoming like my desk. Plus, these fabric color choices are going to keep smiling throughout the winter! Thank you, Kat!!!! And you’re very cheeky for sneaking in that lovely batik bookmark that actually matches the Botanics you sent too! #bestcustomerservice #customorderingmadeeasy #everyoneneedsatleastadozenropebowlsright #kidnowwantsacollectionofblueonesforherself #christmasordercomingsoon
The answer is “no, I could not even wait until I got it into the house before taking a picture” of my new #gleaned bundled from @carolynfriedlander because it is everything I dreamt it would be and more! #sodamngiddyrightnow #goingtochannelitintosomecurrentprojectdeadlines #butloveknowingiwonthavetowaitsixmonthsforthesebeauties #orthecoordinates #gleanedfabric
Finally the day has arrived that I can reveal one of my secret sewing projects—this gorgeous #sunsalutationsquilt top that I tested for the pattern release from @wholecirclestudio! Sheri is launching the pattern to coincide with her brilliant quilt hanging in the @pbstudiofabrics at Market this weekend with their Painters Palette solids. I also used their fabrics in this quilt (and will be writing up a review on my blog soon of my experience and observations using these lovely colors!) and had fun pairing them with my @aurifilthread stash for my piecing work to make sure that I don’t see any white or other neutral threads peaking through when I go to quilt this cheerful design! Eleven threads were used in the creation, along with twenty six beautiful and rich solids, and one quilting cat assistant. Head over to @wholecirclestudio to pick up this beginner-friendly pattern at a 25% discount until Monday! #painterspalettesolids #aurifil #aurifilthread #aurfil50wt #sewtherainbow #ignorethelackofironing
Sometimes, I think the colors that I see in nature can’t possibly be real. They seem too perfect—too crisp like the chill that has crept into the fall air to brittle the leaves that try to match the colors of the sky, only to fail by creating a beauty of their own. #fallsky #colortheworld #stopandenjoythebeautyoutsideyourfrontdoor
I have been following the @sjsacademy posts for quite some time now and am continually impressed with both the skills their young sewists display as well the maturity their fiber artworks depict in their messages—sometimes highlighting subjects that a lot of adults don’t recognize/comprehend/acknowledge. In today’s climate, these types of works are so very important, so if you can forego your morning cup of joe, or skip buying just one extra fat quarter this week and instead send those funds towards this amazing cause, I’m sure this group of artists will put them to outstanding use raising awareness of not just the social issues their generation faces in their community, but how those issues are magnified as part of this vast globe. #sjsacademy #everydollarcounts #somethingsmallforyouisenormoustosomeoneelse #itllfeelgoodafter #ipromise
Thanks to the awesomeness that is Sheri of @wholecirclestudio, I was finally able to get a decent photograph of my #cabanaquilt top! Sooooooo love this pattern and looking forward to starting another one soon. I also dragged along my “Crazy Carkai” one too as I need to get that one under the needle shortly as well and maybe posting a pic will force me to put it in the queue after my secret sewing projects are done and dusted and delivered. #quiltyfriendsarethebest #especiallyoneswhohavehandyhubbies #andsharethehandiness
With quite a few secret sewing projects going on these days, plus a lot of long hours at my day job last month, my sewjo is suffering slightly from the “overwhelmingness” and “deadlines” and “waiting for fabric orders to come in so I can keep going” mashup going on in my creative life. Enter @magickmoods to provide a little re-centering assistance. #magikmoodsarefun #thecupcakesandkaleonewasamusing #spendingmyweekendsewingmyfingersoff #mysanityneedsit
Naturally, when you’re forty three years old and head to your parents’ for a belated birthday celebration weekend of apple picking and presents and dinner, you also must play Transformers with your six year old daughter with your original ‘80s Transformers toys. #neverthrowoutyourchildhood #aretheseconsideredantiquesyet #lakesidebreeze #stillwishitwasanoceanone #refusetogrowup #willstilldothiswheniameightythree
Went out for sushi to celebrate my birthday tonight and was presented with a cute candle adorned lotus flower with which to make a birthday wish--but we can't for the life us figure out how to make it stop chiming "Happy Birthday!" #endlessbirthday #theycanprobablyhearitinasia #butitreallyisclever
Today is International Day of Peace, so it seems fitting to post a picture of a place I liked to visit occasionally back when I worked in Manhattan a few blocks north of the United Nations Headquarters. Given the current world events of late, we all could probably benefit from the chimes of a Japanese peace bell. (Not my photo, by the way.) #internationaldayofpeace #worldpeaceday #donatekindnesstoeachother
I may be slightly over-engineering this tree skirt just a wee tad bit. One thing is for sure--a 6" compass is of little help when you need to draw an arc for a 90degree quadrant that has a 3' radius. #willdefinitelydoaquarterscaledversioninscrapsfirst #haveprotractorwillgetangular #mightneedtostopselfdraftingpatterns
Grabbed Adela and her table and tossed her outside today for some HST sewing fun in perfect weather! Monkey faced child also enjoying a glorious last day of summer before first grade starts tomorrow for her. Taking a forced break from my Christmas tree skirt geometry lesson inside due to hubby making an insane amount of noise with the shop vacuum and a mission to eradicate the basement of ancient insulation, replete of mouse domiciles. Eek--literally. #aurifil #singerfeatherweight #oldiesbutgoodies #sewingoutside #haveplugwilltravel #greatgrandmassewingmachine
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here! Starting work on a Christmas tree skirt I designed for this commissioned project and now the fun has started of figuring out the geometry for it. I want to work in as many of these pretty @modafabrics as possible from @official_basicgrey's Berry Merry collection. Loving the ornaments, present wrapping stripes and the adorable forestry scene prints! Just needed to match up some @robertkaufman #konacotton solids to round out some accents alongside their gorgeous #quilterslinen, which will be adding a classy and heirloom neutral touch to the whole shebang. Time to learn some arc segmenting math skills! #knewiboughtthatcompassandprotractorforareasonyearsago #justneedtorememberhowtousethem #morefuntoeatpiethantodopimath #wheredidiputthegin #thatwillsurelyhelpthings
My #cabanaquilt test top is all assembled and I am officially in love like a moonstruck teenager! Just need to trim it up in the morning and take some beauty shots. Also, learned a valuable lesson during this make--June Tailor's "Starch Savvy" spray is not in fact starch spray AT ALL (and this pattern rightly calls for starch because Sheri=genius). Needless to say, that alone created a few more MacGuyver moments than I needed, but @wholecirclestudio is an absolute wizard and a saint and helped me rework my one self-induced trouble spot. Obviously, I have chucked that June Tailor junk in the bin and will be stocking up on Niagara starch spray pronto! #aurifil #konacotton #robertkaufman #stripesfordays #angleplay #60degreesofawesome
So psyched that my tote from @leon10xx arrived last weekend from the Netherlands! Been so busy sewing and bogged down at my day job that I haven't had time to do a proper happy dance about my new arm candy! Delighted to be sporting Audrey, Liz, Marilyn, Marlon, Humphrey and James in a deliciously texture linen!!! Only regret was not being able to go her country to pick it up in person. And so soft with its flannel lining!
Getting to the exciting part now! Last Sunday I cut all the strips and pieces, and now that I got most of my big chores done for today, will start sewing strips together! Hoping to have my test of the #cabanaquilt top fully pieced by the end of tomorrow so I can some pics in the daytime. Cannot wait to have this one all done and dusted and see the hubby snoring under it. #konacotton #dontknowwhatiwoulddowithoutpostits #orwithoutthelargebindingclips #lovingtheearthbrown #canfeelfallalready
Cat sitting the neighbors' crazy Siamese kittens (six months old) and can't get a particular Disney song out of my head. Also, these two are really hard to photograph because Rupert, the boy (he's bigger than his sister by a few inches), can't stop leaping at everything that moves and his sister, Ivy, can't stop scheming to get their treat bag open. These are the only non-blurry shots out of about fifty... #catsbecrazy #preferoldercatstocrazykittens #mytoeskeepgettingattacked
Not entirely sure this is what they mean by "measure twice, cut once." But hey, if two rulers is what it takes for this mathematically challenged quilter to make sure she is doing the angle right, then by golly, that's what I'm gonna do! Can't believe this is the first time in 20+ years of quilting that I'm finally using the angle guides on my cutting mat. Craziness. But this pattern is so awesome that the geometry lesson with my mat and ruler is worth it!
For TWO YEARS I have been a nuisance and a pest with my begging and pleading with @wholecirclestudio for a pattern for her gorgeous #cabanaquilt which I instantly adored the first time I ever laid eyes on it. The geometry of this quilt drew me into it immediately, but so did the whimsical beachy feel of those retro umbrella stripes having spent many summer weeks on Cape Cod while growing up. Was not the least bit surprised it was chosen by the MQG to be part of their traveling show this year! Needless to say, when she needed testers for the pattern, I pounced on her before the email finished rendering in my inbox. This gem will have Earth brown #konacotton instead of black stripes in my version, with a shot of Ruby red #konacotton to match the red walls in our bedroom and will be my husband's sleeping quilt (he doesn't like to share after about halfway through the night), and is the semi-companion piece to the Carolyn Friedlander ladened HST goodness I'm cooking up as well. Cabana or bust time! #alsodoingatreeskirttoobutnotdoingrevealsofthatonejustyetasitssuperspecial
'Tis a sad night in the Meeker Manse this late evening as there has been an untimely demise. My poor bolt of #konacotton White has finally been extinguished. While 4.33 yards of the previously remaining 6.5 yards will be dedicated to my testing of a quilt I'll post more about tomorrow, the other 2.33 yards that were remaining will be used to complete 588 HSTs in a finished 4.5" size with all 42 #Carkai prints (about four charm packs worth) and three charm packs of #friedlander (with 42 squares in each, although there are some duplicate prints in those packs--but they're all soooo fabulous). The final quilt will be about 96" x 96" and will be for our bed--and will be a somewhat companion piece to the test pattern that I am insanely excited about! And yes, I'm a firm believer that there is no such thing as too much of a good thing in a single quilt! #needtoplaceanorderforanewboltsoon #robertkaufman #carolynfriedlander
CORRECTION--I had a blonde moment and didn't snap the bar fully into the channel! But I'm still annoyed that the bottom of this foot is totally open so there's a chance of transferring gear grease to projects and getting pins stuck in the works... Why in the fresh hell can't anyone make a decent high shank walking foot that has a closed bottom case to prevent grease transfer from the mechanism to projects, has proper guide bar connection points, has a true centered needle position on an open foot for visibility and accuracy (or the ability to adjust the carriage to get center) and doesn't clack like a 1930s steam train when under operating conditions? Seriously, #Juki -- why is the #jukitl2010q and other TL machine issued walking foot just a third party after-thought for an otherwise perfect home sewing/quilting system?!?!?!? Not even the competition can get it all right (although they get closer as you can actually see the sewing space with this foot, weighs about 4 ounces less and it's a ton quieter than the Juki OEM one!)--get your RD&E and patent people on this problem already -- and yes, it IS a HUGE problem!
I spent yesterday reconditioning my great grandmother's #singerfeatherweight and reuniting it with the table it came home with in 1957. While a horrific display of ignorance and privilege and outright hatred was happening further south along this same time zone, I was spending time removing years of grime, then refreshing grease and gently coaxing this machine back into working order so I could sew some #bluerkblocks for @craftycop's drive for fallen officers. I think Mémère would be pleased with my first chosen project on her machine--and perhaps one of these blocks might make it into a quilt for one of the two police families who lost their heroes in the helicopter crash during the investigation of the vehicular terrorism attack yesterday.
My great grandmother was born Jewish, and was orphaned by age four--then was raised by a Roman Catholic family and grew up working in their general store when she was as a teenager and young woman. She was a woman with deep ties to her community, even after she married the son of another general shop owner (scandal!). She spent her life making sure her community had what they needed, even when they couldn't always afford to pay the grocery bill (especially during WWII) because at the end of the day she knew that above all, people just wanted to live their lives in peace and free from hunger and be safe with their families. It's unfathomable that my generation is still battling with these simple principles even today and I truly hope that those who are so blind to how wrong it is to believe that granting inclusionary rights to others somehow diminishes their own rights they've been enjoying for centuries, finally figure out just how idiotic that all is so that my daughter's generation never has to live through another yesterday when they are in their 40s.

Well, I couldn't apply the 70% off "by the yard" coupon to the rolls of bulk batting, but I COULD apply a 50% one for downloading their new application from the Apple Store, so this had to happen. Now to start figuring out which closet will need to get cleared out when the doctor clears me for lifting stuff again post sinus surgery--but breathing is already easier even with all the swelling and healing still going on still! #thanksforthecrazycouponsjoann #warmcompany #battingfordays #thiswillhelpwiththeseventopswaitingforbatting
