31 years ago I started washing dishes in the local restaurant in Croydon, Melbourne, Australia. I wanted to be a 5 star Hotel Manager. Lived and worked in Melbourne then came to London at the age of 25, in October 1995. Had an amazing time. Went back to Melbourne in 1998 and thought I would never return. Got married to a beautiful Maltese girl, bought a house, then Malta joined the EU. We came back. It was 2005. Went out for an Australian style coffee. The only place back then was Flat White. Four years later, we opened Kaffeine on a old school street in a quiet corner of Fitzrovia. 9 years later, here we are. It's been quite a ride. Looking forward to hitting ten years of Kaffeine. I will be 50. #kaffeine #kaffeinelondon #kaffeinearmy #fitzrovia #london #cafelife #hospitalitylife #specialtycoffee #livethelifeyoulovelovethelifeyoulive
9 years ago, we found this old shop that had been closed since August 2008. It was in a 'forgotten' part of Fitzrovia, but Mrs Dore-Smith worked down the street in a design agency. The tenant had vacated but was still paying rent, so it took 6 months to get the keys from him and we started renovations on July 5th, 2009. Our aim was to open on August 14th. We did. We invited all my wife's workmates down for a free lunch. Two local boys came in and we offered free coffee but they insisted on paying. It was our first transaction. They still come in today. Here we are, 9 years later. Respect to all those who have crossed the doors, those who believed in us, those who have worked for us, those who have made the dream come true. Thank you. #kaffeine #kaffeinelondon #kaffeinearmy #fitzrovia #london #cafe #cafelife #specialtycoffee #hardwork #livethelifeyoulovelovethelifeyoulive
We have had this on our tables since opening day back in 2009. The famous Carrot and Lemon Marmalade. Seriously delicious on @sevenseeded sourdough toast, or our own toasted banana bread, or just plain by itself on a spoon. Every Christmas we give away over 800 jars of it to our wonderful customers, but it is also available to purchase in store if you ran out/missed out. You will not believe it until you try it. Available both stores all day, all year, forever.
Instantly recognisable, some say iconic. The Kaffeine sticker on the disposable cup. Who knows where disposable cups will be over the next few years. Personally, we call on the designers and innovators and the manufacturers to please design a cup that helps the environment instead of harming it. There is no doubt, this is a big ask. In the meantime, if you bring your own we will discount your purchase by 10 pence. For more informed reading on the subject, check @jimseven on twitter or @unitedbaristas blog. Great reading from both.
Healthy start to the New Year? Try our Paleo granola with greek yoghurt and rhubarb and raspberry compote. Available to eat in or to take away. This stuff is seriously very good. Not a rip off glass/pot of yoghurt with a touch of granola, this is a glass/pot of granola with yoghurt to complement it. Available both stores. All year. Not just January.
Looking for coffee in London? Look out for the BT tower. It’s in Fitzrovia. North of @OxfordStreetW1, east of Regent street, west of Tottenham Court Road. It’s also where we’ve been for almost 9 years. Two stores. Great Titchfield Sreet and Eastcastle Street. Often imitated, never beaten. See you soon.
Back open tomorrow at 7:30 am at both stores. It will be a big year again in Fitzrovia with several high profile restaurant openings, Crossrail starting up & @oxfordstreetw1 being pedestrianised. Whatever happens, we are here to look after you as we have since 2009. Happy New Year to you, thank you, and see you all soon.
Looking back and looking forward. Our ninth year of mad swagger and impeccable coffee. So fortunate to have been where we have been, extremely lucky to be able to continue to look after you all. Back and ready for service on January 2nd. Watch this space, as Fitzrovia is going to have a massive year....

We make everything from scratch in store apart from our French pastries who we buy from @sevenseeded. All other cakes and food are made every day in our kitchens at both stores including the vegan Lemon and Poppyseed cakes, the almond meal friand (made with almond paste leftover from our own almond milk) and the underrated Polenta and orange cake. Limited quantities each day. Be quick.
