Urban wildlife is constantly adapting to the environment and available space. A Sparkling Violetear Hummingbird nests on a plant from a flower pot in an office in the middle of Quito city. This birds are fairly common in the city, and sometimes have to closely coexist with people in their environment.

The Carunculated Caracara is one of the most common birds seen in the paramo. The adult Caracara is easily identified due to the coloration of its face. Bright yellow and orange colors easily highlight this bird from others in the mountains. This picture was taken in Antisana Reserve.

Galapagos lava rocks are home to the Sally Lightfoot Crab. This common invertebrate can be found on every island of the Archipelago. When adults, they turn to their final bright red coloration, but they spend their juvenile stage as dark black crabs, as a defense mechanism by blending with the rocks.

It is important to stay inside the trails at every moment on the visitor sites in the Galapagos National Park. This time, even the marine iguanas felt like following the signs. Nah just kidding, they can do whatever they want, it's their home.

Galapagos is the land of cacti. Arid conditions prevail in the archipelago and is common to find drought resistant flora in the area. Much of the landscape is harsh and dominated by this type of vegetation. The Prickly Pear Cactus is the common name for plants of Opuntia genus in the Galapagos. These plants provide the habitat and main food source for many of the birds and animals on the islands including 2 species of finch, iguanas, doves, tortoises and mockingbirds.

Santa Fe Island is a small, relatively flat island at the center of the Archipelago, to the southeast of Santa Cruz Island. Large numbers of sea lions are found on the beaches in the bay and are usually seen either resting on the sand or playing and surfing the waves.

Getting close to a resting white-tip reef shark in Bucaneer's Cove. This bottom dwelling shark is nocturnal and is often seen resting on the bottom during the day, sometimes in small groups. It is not aggressive and will generally swim away if disturbed, although it may bite if harassed. At night it hunts among crevices in the reef.

Lava lizards are the most abundant reptile in the Galapagos Islands. There are 7 (possibly 9) recognized species that are unique to certain islands. The Hood lava lizard (Microlophus delanonis) is found only in Española Island. Different from other lava lizards, they have a red coloration and a considerable bigger size. This female can be recognized by the bright orange coloration under the head and neck.

The Galapagos Waved Albatross has the title of the biggest bird on the islands. Their massive wingspan can extend up to 220-250cm (7-8 feet). Albatross can reach the speed of 40 miles per hour. It can fly long period of time without rest. Albatross does not have a lot of natural enemies. Besides humans, their main predator is the tiger shark, which hunts young birds that are learning to fly.

An Eastern-Pacific green sea turtle resting on the bottom of the ocean next to a starfish. Possibly between 1200-3500 females nest annually in the archipelago. Some of these females, as well as some males, are recruited from distant feeding grounds outside the archipelago, while others are recruited locally. However, at present it is not possible to say what proportion of the population is truly resident and what migratory, or even to give a worthwhile estimate of its size.

The Galapagos hawk is the biggest land bird in the islands. As one of the only natural predators of larger animals on the islands, it feeds on just about anything, including rodents, birds, lizards, young goats, young tortoises and sea turtles, insects, and carrion. Galapagos hawks can cooperatively attack their prey, which is why is common to see a male and female together.

The neck of the Galapagos giant tortoises varies depending on the species. The tortoises that evolved in islands where the food was in higher areas tend to have longer necks. In the wild they feed mostly of cacti and grasses, but also of many introduced fruits like limes and guavas.

Scientists figure that land-dwelling iguanas from South America must have drifted out to sea millions of years ago on logs or other debris, eventually landing on the Galápagos. From that species emerged marine iguanas, which spread to nearly all the islands of the archipelago. Each island hosts marine iguanas of unique size, shape and color.
