In 2016 I started working with Andrew Huberman and the @hubermanlab at @Stanford University. The scientist there are working on some amazing tools using VR technology to help people with various conditions. Andrew and I Partnered with Mauricio Hoyas who has been stationed on Guadalupe island every season for over 13 years running the Isla Guadalupe Biopreserve and Field Station there. @MorneHardenberg and I began collecting footage of Great Whites that Andrew has taken back to the lab with amazing and very interesting results. This project has grown so far in the last 2 years when we first started talking about the possibilities. 2018 will prove to be the most progressive to date and I was very excited putting the brief together last night for this upcoming expedition. I look forward to Sharing more about this project as papers are published and we have more breakthroughs.
These are ambush predators that are the top of food chain. But they too have a predator that eats them! Orca whales ambush great whites and eat their livers, and ONLY their livers as a dessert so to speak. What’s interesting is there has never been a documented attach of an Orca on a Human. I used to be so, sooo utterly scared of being attacked by a shark while surfing. For my first 20 years of surfing, anytime I was out there it would come to mind and I would get anxiety. 11 years ago I went out and faced this fear of mine and something amazing happened when I did that. Today I have zero fear of being attacked by a shark. I know the FACTS and the TRUTH about these animals. Are they still able to attack a human? The answer is yes but when you stand back and see how rare this happens and combine that with knowledge about their behavior you see the truth which is I am more likely to win the super lotto 2X this month then get attacked by a shark. It takes all the fear out of this image and allows me to really appreciate evolution of the perfect hunter of fish, NOT people. #FACTS not #FEARS
The long journeys criss crossing the planet may have ceased for the moment, but boy are we deep down “post lane” So much amazing technology combined with so many amazing creative forces, all in collaborating with Andrew Huberman at Stanford and Mauricio Hoyas coming all together to create something and discover something that didn’t exist before. The “UNKNOWN” is where all the fun in life is located. That acceptance and realization that “control” is really just FEAR masking itself as humanity allows for the magic to Happen. This photo of Morne Hardenberg whom I have spent so many days, months with documenting this planet, the animals and their plethora of behaviors has been such an honor and a privilege. It has also provided some of the most amazing experiences of my life to date. It’s amazing the things that happen when I face my fears, walk towards them, go through them and then in retrospect get to look back and see the results.
Uncertainty, retirement, unknown... 2017 ended with some of these things. I embraced uncertainty, smiled in the face of fear and see the future and its so bright. 2018 will be all time, #NewBeginnings you can start everyday like it’s the 1st. There is no such thing as closure, like a river life keeps moving and changing and the best is to find like minded people who raise the bar, then raise it again and again. Those are my peeps! NO such thing as “retire”..... #CarpeDiem #RaiseTheBar #EmbraceUncertainty #NothingToFearButFEARitself
All flights canceled which means I get to take my 3 girls through Central Park in the snow and have the 4th most epic day of 2018. I mean each day is getting better and better. You feel it people!! This is the year, what ever dream or idea you have GO manifest it! Add up 2018 and it’s 11:11 every day
