Tall Man and I went to see Murder on the Orient Express last night. Something of a Kenneth Branagh vanity project I thought, but, still, an opportunity to dress up. Not using my little grey cells but rather a little grey hat.
The coat is 1980s and was new old stock when I bought it last year @twinwoodfestival. It has a wonderful detachable faux fur collar. 1930s bag from @vintiquetree and 1930s belt buckle fastening the cravat from @madame.e.vintage .

It is only over the past couple of years that I have discovered the joy of author P.G.Wodehouse. TV adaptations of Jeeves and Wooster left me cold. But because I love the era they were written and set in, I bought an old novel from Barter Books in Alnwick. It was part of the Blandings series and oh, what a sublime revelation. Yes, they are absolute farce, but written with true genius. I can't read enough of them now. If you haven't read any Wodehouse I urge you to. And if you do, who are your favourite characters? It just leaves me to say "Pig-hooo-o-o-o-ey!"

I have recently discovered two things; I like wearing men's ties and I adore swishing around in a cape. What do you like to wear time and again?

I have enjoyed a lovely walk on a delightfully, crisp autumnal day. Chill enough to slip into thick hosiery in a spicy shade of burnt orange. Whatever you have been doing, I hope you've had a wonderful Wednesday.

This outfit is inspired by autumn. The hat dates somewhere from the 1910s is wired round the brim and the crown stitched with leaves. The label inside says George Griffin and Sons, 38 Chauncy Street, Boston. The jacket and shirt are 1970s but happily evoke earlier decades. Swipe to see the detail on the crown. Hat is from Etsy shop All Sorts of Wonderful, jacket from @secondhandroseworcester and shirt @vintagegreenclothing

These boots were made for, not walking, but, playing golf! I have patiently waited for the right pair of Edwardian boots to walk my way and these are they. Apparently designed with the golfing lady in mind they are perfect for a walk in the autumn leaves. Swipe to see the interior labels. Purchased from Etsy shop UK Charm Vintage.

New to me this 1980s blouse from good old Marks and Spencer. With its white collar and cuffs it brought to mind an earlier era. I've added a silk cravat and cloche hat for a 20s inspired look. The blouse is from Etsy shop Going Around Again.

I've discovered old belt buckles make great scarf rings. This one, made from early plastic, has an art deco design so typical of the 1930s. The shades of green compliment the pattern in the silk cravat beautifully.

Autumn is a wonderful time to layer up and play with colour, pattern and texture. Looking at my wardrobe I would say it was made for this time of year. Do you have a season that you feel the most comfortable in?

Good morning. Thank you for your lovely comments on yesterday's outfit. And hello to new folks 🖐️. I'm looking forward to seeing your retro ensembles.
This is the same 1980s blouse and skirt as for the aviatrix inspired outfit but aren't accessories wonderful? They just easily turn a look right around. The cloche hat is contemporary, the coat 1980s, the cravat and belt buckle 1930s. .

Here in the UK the clocks went back an hour to start British wintertime. I've gone even further back in time! I raided Tall Man's wardrobe and found this amazing linen cap and goggles. The cap is most probably from early racing driving and has tabs to hold the goggles straps in place. The goggles themselves are jointed in the middle and fur lined so they fit snugly on your face. They probably were used for flying and pre date the second world war. The leather flight jacket is very cosy and I think looks far better on me than Tall Man! Hope you are all having a marvellous Sunday but I must fly.....

It was lovely to have some hat chat with you yesterday. Today's chapeau is rather less ostentatious but oh so wearable. An eight panel bakerboy hat in tweed, lined with fleece. I've teamed it with a Welsh blanket or tapestry tweed long line jacket which is part of a skirt suit. I love the geometric pattern. The scarf is a bow tie or cravat as it's very narrow in the middle section. And it's held in place with a 1930s celluloid buckle. I expect I'll be far too warm! .

When I purchased this hat I felt far too self conscious to wear it as part of everyday life. Now I think "What the heck, let them stop and stare" It's strange to think that when this hat was created it would have been considered outrageous to go out bare headed. Do you wear hats as everyday wear or do you save them for special occasions?

When I was a child and impetuously wanted to do something my Grandpa would say "Hang on the bell Nellie" meaning I should slow down and think first. I say it now to people for the same reasons but I don't know many who do. So I wondered about it's origin. In a convoluted way it refers to a poem called Curfew must not Ring Tonight written by 16 year old Rose Hartwick Thorpe in 1867. It was the most popular poem of the 19th century and a favourite of Queen Victoria. It was set to music in 1895, recited by the character Prissie Andrews in Anne of Green Gables and quoted by Katherine Hepburn in the film Desk Set. But here's where my Grandpa's phrase came in. It was parodied and released as Hang on the Bell Nellie by Billie Cotton and his Big Band in 1941. The story is this: Bessie's lover Basil is arrested and thrown in prison sentenced to die when the curfew bell rings. To stop her lovers execution Bessie risks her life climbing to the top of the bell tower and hangs on the bell to stop it from ringing. Was she successful? You'll have to read the poem to find out.
Do you have sayings in your family that no-one knows the meaning of?

Tall Man and I shall be spending the day on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. But we shall have travelled back in time to a railway at war in the 1940s. A time to dress up and have fun, but also a time to remember.

I've been meaning to show you this fabulous bag that carried everything I needed when I had my short stay in Spain last month. It's a 1960s flight crew carry on holdall with various flight tags still attached. It's owner was working as an air stewardess (cabin crew now)from the late 60s and the bag really is a little piece of travel history. It's last outing was for a Thompson holiday in 1983. You can imagine how excited I was to pop it in the overhead locker of an aeroplane 34 years later. And that's why I collect old things and reuse them. I purchased it from Etsy shop @no9steephill.

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments and likes following my last post. It's fun looking at everyone's wardrobe of clothes and seeing how you style them. Whether you always wear true vintage or recreate the look of past decades with modern garments, I do enjoy seeing the results and being inspired. As it's Sunday I thought I'd go for Sunday best attire and an angelic face. (I know you're not fooled for a second.)

#tbt to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway "Railway at War" weekend last October. It was a most incredible experience, travelling along on a steam train from Pickering to Whitby with most passengers dressed in clothes of the era. Each station had it's own theme, but Levisham was the most memorable as it depicted occupied France. It's taking place this year on the 14th and 15th of October. Come along, why don't you. .

My daughter brought back this delightful little neckscarf from a trip to Amsterdam. She tells me there is a wonderful vintage scene there. The design is very 70s in style with little brown daisys on an oatmeal background. Goes perfectly with my 70s Welsh tapestry skirt.

I would be misleading you if I were to say I enjoyed housework. I regard it as a necessary evil. But I do find that a good pinny does wonders for my cleaning psyche. This red leather one is a doozy and teams up well with a frilly blouse. Pop on my favourite music, grab the feather duster and I'm all sorted. How do you sweep away the housework blues?
