I've been away from work for over a week and had such fun travelling and dancing. I return tomorrow and this outfit captures that back to school feeling; uniform cleaned and ready and satchel packed with new exercise books. There was a "bring and buy" at dance camp and for 50 pence I purchased this lovely polka dot silk tie. Pocket money well spent, I'd say. .

Tall Man and I travel around in an ancient campervan that has yet to have a heater fitted and leaks rain water. In inclement weather such as we're experiencing at the moment we have to get togged up in many layers. Early motorists regalia is just the ticket.

I'm spending the weekend at a "dance camp" in County Durham, attempting to improve my Lindy Hop. I decline to wear sweatpants and t-shirts and instead am going for a 1920s sports casual look. I think I've got away with it. .

Literally a flying visit to my father-in-law in SE Spain and back home to snow. This is yesterday during a walk in spring like sunshine through the Orange groves. Tall Man and I came across a very dilapidated Finca with wonderfully weathered walls and wooden shutters. .

I'm going to visit my father-in-law in south east Spain. He lives near to where they filmed the so called Spaghetti Western in the mid 1960s. I've taken them as my inspiration for my holiday wardrobe; a fistful of vintage.

#tbt to the Snow Ball. I'm dancing with my friend Luiz and wearing the first piece of #truevintage I ever bought. A beautiful 1930s crepe dress, with fabulous bishop sleeves that have contrasting rose patterned cuffs. I wore a large rose corsage to compliment the cuffs. The skirt is made up of three panels and swishes delightfully when dancing. It was purchased from UK Etsy shop "Dottys Vintage". Photo by Christopher Donaldson. .

I persuaded Tall Man to join me in my Instabooth for the first post of 2018. We have perambulated across moor and dene with a jolly fine pub meal in the middle. It gave me an excuse to wear my lovely, new to me, knitted jerkin from @hurdyburdyvintage. I've enjoyed following everyone's journey through 2017 and look forward to seeing your stylish adventures in 2018. Happy New Year! .

"Everybody's waiting for the Man with the Bag

Following on from my last post here is Santa, who, just like his reindeer chums, graced the Christmas window in a now long gone department store. He's a 1950s Steiff toy and he's been sharing my Christmases for over half a century. I hope you are all settling down to a wonderful and happy festive holiday. Merry Christmas everyone.🎅

All together now ....."Awwwwww" These little guys have shared each and every one of my Christmas's and it was such a privilege when my Mum passed them on to me to look after. Back in the 1950s and early 60s my Dad used to create the Christmas window at the city's department store where he worked. He would use toys from the store, and turn them into magical animatronic Christmas scenes. I don't remember them but have seen old cine film of these Disneyesque works of wonder. These fellas were rescued after their season of stardom and have come out to play every year for the past half century. The Man with the Bag is not far behind 😉

The lovely Debra @tooshorttopincurl says "You can always wear a hat" and I so agree. But I have also discovered that you can always wear a corsage. They just transform an outfit into something special and give a lovely vintage feel. This one is from Etsy shop Rose and Pin and has turned this 1960s cardigan into a fabulous and classy Christmas jumper. .

Day 7 of my outfit challenge to reinvent the look of this 1980s polka dot shirt and Prince of Wales check skirt by adding a different hat. And 7 days are quite enough as I would like to wear something different now! We are back to where we started with my eight panel bakerboy hat but a very different look to day1. The addition of a 1950s fur stole has glammed the whole thing up. A real Peaky Blinder!
How do you snaz up the look of your outfits to give them a different twist?

I have been so busy I forgot to post. This is actually yesterday's outfit but, dash it all, you're getting it anyway. We are nearly coming to the end of my outfit challenge to reinvent the look of this 1980s polka dot shirt and Prince of Wales check skirt by adding a different hat. A hat can really change the personality of an outfit and here we have a 1940s inspired number to give a wartime look. The classic shape of the overcoat and 1940s bag help to reinforce a bygone era. .

Baby, it's cold outside! Continuing my personal outfit challenge to change the look and era of this 1980s polka dot shirt and Prince of Wales check skirt with a hat providing the inspiration. The icy weather has played a part in my decision to go with this 1960s faux fur beret style hat, teamed with a 1960s collared cardigan, 1950s teddy bear coat and 1960s Antler vanity case that makes a smashing carry all handbag. I can't stop wearing ties and this one is a 1950s silk number held in place with a little festive brooch. For those of you in wintry climes, how are you keeping cosy today?

Day 3 of my outfit challenge. Can I make this 1980s polka dot shirt and Prince of Wales check skirt take on a different personality with the addition of a hat? Well, it's a western theme today with a felt fedora. Neckwear is a tweed buck-fold tie from @princesandpaupersuk and lovely silk scarf from Tall Man's wardrobe. I actually wore a tweed jacket under the coat when out and about as it's a bit nippy today.

They say we only wear 25% of our wardrobe 75% of the time. In other words we have far too many clothes! So I've challenged myself to rework the look of this 1980s polka dot shirt and Prince of Wales check skirt so they look different every time. The key piece is a hat. Yesterday they were paired with tweed and an eight panel bakerboy hat. Today a beret. If you feel unsure about wearing hats start with a beret as they are so easy to style. I love this @misspitchypatchy 1930s style knitted number. It sits softly around my hair so never disturbs the styling when I take it off. Worn at this jaunty angle it gives the outfit a nice retro feel. Teamed with a 1950s clutch coat from @blacksheepantiques

Clothes are an important part of my world. They are not there just to protect my modesty or shield me against the elements. They reflect my mood and personality. I can express myself through what I wear. And one of the best ways I've found to do this is to wear a hat. A carefully chosen chapeau can alter the look of an outfit and even the era. Over the next few posts I will be wearing the same 1980s polka dot shirt and Prince of Wales check skirt but changing the look with a hat. Join me on the journey and tell me what you think.

As I set off to run some errands in town yesterday, I commented to Tall Man that someone would tell me I looked like Miss Marple. Later, whilst in the queue at the building socety, a man said loudly "I hope you don't mind me saying but you look like a detective." I smiled "Ah yes, do I?" "Yes" he said, " But someone from the, you know, olden days. Oh, what's she called?" "Miss Marple?" I suggested. "Yes!" He declared. " Miss Marple, that's it. You look like Miss Marple!" He was obviously delighted to have cleared this little matter of identity up, and wandered off to the bank teller a happy man.

My lovely Miss Marple scarf tucks down nicely under a jacket collar to keep the pesky north winds at bay. So less cumbersome than a conventional scarf and
fun to dress it up with a brooch too. Stay cosy everyone.

It is only over the past couple of years that I have discovered the joy of author P.G.Wodehouse. TV adaptations of Jeeves and Wooster left me cold. But because I love the era they were written and set in, I bought an old novel from Barter Books in Alnwick. It was part of the Blandings series and oh, what a sublime revelation. Yes, they are absolute farce, but written with true genius. I can't read enough of them now. If you haven't read any Wodehouse I urge you to. And if you do, who are your favourite characters? It just leaves me to say "Pig-hooo-o-o-o-ey!"
