📸 by @filipe_deandrade | Cheetah cub in South Africa. Doesn’t this little guy remind you of a lead singer in a 70’s rock band? Mascara running, baby faced and the presence of an icon. While on assignment with Nat Geo in Africa, I had a personal mission to document as many different wild cat species as I could. Cheetahs were obviously high on that list. They are the worlds fastest land animals topping out at over 60mph and can get there in just 3 seconds...that’s ghost. A mother cheetah may give birth to 3-5 cubs and within 6 months those cubs could reach full size. Despite all the advantages that cheetahs seemingly possess, they are struggling in the wild. Cub mortality is around 90% in some locations and they are listed as vulnerable with their numbers declining. However, if you Love wild cats as much as I do, there is something you can do to help. Check out natgeo.org/bigcats to get involved with our mission to protect these iconic animals. Love y’all wildlife warriors. #bigcatsinitiative #causeanuproar #africa #bigcats #cats #catsofinstagram

Avalanche Rescue | Photograph by Dalia Fichmann (@creativeartview)

Your Shot (@natgeoyourshot) photographer Dalia Fichmann captured this image of an avalanche rescue dog running an exercise looking for survivors. More than 2000 persons have been caught and buried in avalanches only in Switzerland in recent years. Rescue dogs provide valuable services in finding buried humans. Training these dogs is time consuming and a lot of endurance is required for both the dog and his handler. Fichmann accompanied the avalanche rescue dog team under the leadership of Nicole Dammann a full day during their training session in Melchsee Frutt.

Video by @bobpoolefilms | Young male lions live a dangerous life. They have to be extremely careful not to draw too much attention from the adult pride males. Eventually young males move away, team up with other males and move from one pride’s territory to the next, keeping a very low profile. As a coalition of young males, they search for a territory and females they can start a pride with. There is strength in numbers, but it can take years for them grow big and experienced enough fighters to take over another pride's territory and steal their females.

Video by @bobpoolefilms | This big male lion was looking for his brother. They’d been roaring to each other all morning. I had followed him during the night and filmed him with an infrared camera as he stole a wildebeest from a lioness, just after she’d killed it. He eventually let her eat, but not until he had his fill. What a brute!

Why do zebras have stripes at all? Scientists aren't sure, but many theories center on their utility as some form of camouflage. The patterns may make it difficult for predators to identify a single animal from a running herd and distort distance at dawn and dusk. Or they may dissuade insects that recognize only large areas of single-colored fur or act as a kind of natural sunscreen. Because of their uniqueness, stripes may also help zebras recognize one another.

Wildlife lovers meet Jacob! He's the undisputed tree-climbing king of Ishasha, Uganda. Lions in this part of Africa have developed a culture of tree-climbing and everyday you can spot them 40 feet high in the branches of fig, acacia and candelabra trees. African lion numbers are also scarce across many of the places where they live so @alexbraczkowski and team are working on a new lion count in Jacob's territory.

#follow @alexbraczkowski and @natgeowild on the quest to film and count Uganda's incredible tree-climbing lions!

📸 @filipe_deandrade | A Florida bobcat lets me know how she feels about getting her photo taken. I’ve stalked bobcats all across the U.S. There is something that draws me to them. Their independence, intelligence and athleticism makes them challenging to photograph. And their beauty makes them regal, the perfect subjects. They can be found in most of the contiguous U.S. where they feed on small mammals and birds so I usually look for them next to rivers or in open fields. I fist saw a bobcat in Virginia when I was hiking the Appalachian Trail. It was zoned in to its future prey and unaware of my presence. I snapped a few shots before it grabbed a mouse and ran away. I was hooked. I Love bobcats. Beyond their beauty they play a vital role in keeping the vermin population down within their natural habitat. Share any cat photos with me if you’d like...I can’t get enough. Stay wild wildlife warriors. #wilduntamed

Video by @bobpoolefilms | Got it! The female cheetah needs to eat and feed her hungry cubs. Tompson’s Gazelle is her favorite food. I call them Cheetah Snacks because they are small and easy to eat. But, these little gazelles are fast and can run at speeds of up to 50 mph for long distances. This cheetah has to get close by stalking. She's a master of ambush hunting in thick bush.
Tompson’s Gazelles have incredibly good eyesight and live in large herds. The more eyes, the more chance of spotting a predator sneaking up on you. Males, like this one, are often found in small bachelor groups of 2 or 3 individuals. That makes it easier for the cheetah to get in close. But the males are also more dangerous to catch, because they have long sharp horns. She has to be very careful not to get impaled when making the kill. •

Video by @bobpoolefilms | Cheetahs can run super fast! I filmed this shot in 4K at 120 frames per second. That is 5 times slow motion. They top out at about 70 mph but this cheetah is a master at ambush hunting in the thick whistling-thorn country. Her spots blend in perfectly with the acacia’s thorn pods that whistle in the wind and give the tree its name. She sees her prey from hundreds of yards away and then the hunt begins. The thick bush, her camouflage and her stealthy movements get her within range of her favorite prey, Tompson’s Gazelle. They are small and easier to kill than larger animals but have keen eyes and are incredibly fast. They can run long distances at over 50 mph, so the cheetah has to get close before making her sprint. Follow @bobpoolefilms to see her kill.

Video by @bobpoolefilms | This can kill me! That's what the wildebeest are thinking. But they are curious, in the same way we like to watch scary movies. They know the cheetah is not after them, so it is safe for them to come in for a closer look. I filmed this amazing cheetah hunting on many occasions but never saw her go after full grown wildebeest. She has her sights set on a Tompson’s Gazelle about 100 yards away and she is stalking to get into range. Cheetahs can run up to 70 mph but they can’t do it for long. She needs to get close and give a burst of speed to catch her prey. The wildebeest are just giving her away. Animals on the savanna work together to alert each other about predators. Here the wildebeest are doing their part. Did she catch it? Find out by following the link above to my instagram account.

Video by @filipe_deandrade | A harlequin shrimp feeds on a starfish in Caño Island, Costa Rica. These charismatic beauties stole my attention as I was diving to film humpback whales. Harlequins are interesting in that males and females will stay together after mating to hunt and raise a family, the Bonnie and Clyde of the underwater world. I was fortunate enough to spend a week with this female and her partner as they fed. It’s crazy how a 2inch shrimp can yoink your attention from a 50ft whale. That shows just how wonderful our oceans are. There is beauty everywhere you look...you just have to jump in. #wilduntamed #costarica #puravida

Turn your sound on for some hungry lion sounds! When lions feed it can get competitive and at times even fierce! @alexbraczkowski has been filming a new @natgeowild show on tree-climbing lions in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park. Many of the lions he sees are full of scars and scratches and you can see why in this video of a pride of 11 lions (three mothers with 8 cubs) feeding on a male Uganda kob which they've just killed. Although male kobs can weigh over 200 lbs, they don't last for more than one meal for this pride of lions and on this particular occasion Alex filmed them eating the whole carcass in just four hours!

If you're wondering why the video has a weird purple color, it's because Alex is using a special infrared light. He's been doing this so he doesn't affect the lions when they are hunting (you can imagine how a hot white light will give away the position of a predator or worse blind the prey its trying to hunt!). Follow @alexbraczkowski and @natgeowild for more shots of lions and other big cats!

Video by @filipe_deandrade | While filming jaguars and olive ridley sea turtles in Costa Rica, I had to completely immerse myself in the lifecycle of both animals. Two iconic species revered and protected by the locals. Not a bad gig. Getting close to turtles on land is cake. I would just walk up to them, keep a respectable distance, wait for the females to start laying eggs and then roll camera. In the water though...totally different. Their lethargic demeanor on land washes away in the ocean. They can ghost you in an instant and getting close enough to give them a high 5 is out of the question. But this interaction was completely instigated by the turtle. I was dumbfounded when she swam right up to me and started to chomp on my camera housing. Then it hit me, she thinks my camera is a jellyfish. Sea turtles have specialized digestive tracks which keeps them safe against jellyfish toxins. How WILD is that? It also showed me how easy it is for this majestic creature to confuse something man-made with something natural. So don’t litter the oceans. Want to see more and to find out how close I got to a wild jaguar? Stay tuned for the film coming out later this year 😸🐢. #wilduntamed #costarica #puravida

Video by @bobpoolefilms | Hey Bro! Big male lions do better when they stay together. These brothers belong to a coalition of four males and they recently took over a new territory. They fought the pride’s males, chased them away and stole their females. Now together they defend a new generation of cubs. Coalitions of adult males are hard to beat. They create strong prides and that is important for the stability of lion populations. Every male lion counts.

@natgeowild is currently in Uganda documenting tree-climbing lions with @alexbraczkowski but today they came across an African leopard climbing down the branches of a large Candelabra tree. @alexbraczkowski is using a new low-light camera which can see in near total darkness (this shot was taken at 19:45 PM ). Leopards are the most adaptable big cat, found across over 150 latitude and eating more than 100 prey species worldwide they can live in almost any environment including deserts and snow capped mountains. Did you know African lions were once found across nearly every major habitat on the continent, ranging from South Africa's Cape mountains as far north as Algeria, Egypt and Morocco. Their most important populations are now limited to ten key strongholds mainly in Zambia, Botswana, Tanzania, South Africa, Kenya and Mozambique. Accurate lion numbers are however rare, but are critical for saving the species.

#follow @natgeowild and @alexbraczkowski on a new adventure to count lions in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park. These lions are also some of the most special on earth - hanging out in massive fig and euphorbia trees. Stay tuned to the @natgeowild Instagram to catch awesome shots, videos and stories about these incredible tree-living lions and why it's important for us to help save them!
