Repost via @ripplezoo - “TODAY marks #WorldRhinoDay. The #animal is listed as one of the most #endangered species in the world and today the appeal is made to shift focus and shed light on what can be done to prevent their demise.
-
There are all five species of #rhino: black, white, greater one-horned #rhinos, Javan and Sumatran. All Rhinoceros are herbivores, meaning that they only consume #plants, and lots of them. In 1960, there were more than 2,000 Northern White Rhinos in #Africa. Today, there are only 3 of them remaining and all 3 are held in captivity in #Kenya with round-the-clock armed security against #poaching.
-
Unstable climates and human #hunting put an end to many rhino species. Let's call all authorities to protect them on WorldRhinoDay!
-
You can #donate to #charities and organizations that support rhinos and other endangered #wildlife such as WWF, International Fund for Animal Welfare and Defenders of Wildlife.” - repost via @ripplezoo

Plastic or no plastic. Which do you prefer?

The Philippines is the 3rd biggest source of ocean plastic pollution. This beach near Manila is covered in cheap, disposable, single-use plastic. For over a week, Greenpeace volunteers cleaned it up to find out the companies responsible. Spot the difference?

POWER OF IMAGERY "At first I was so happy to find this cute seahorse all alone, but as the tide changed, sea grass and debris started to drift over the reef - and plastic, trash and sewage along with it. The white blobs you see in the background are actually plastic bags. As the whole thing unfolded, I knew it was an important scene that had to be documented. It was frustrating, disgusting and sad, but I had to shoot it.

It’s a photo that I wish didn’t exist but now that it does I want everyone to see it. What started as an opportunity to photograph a cute little sea horse turned into one of frustration and sadness as the incoming tide brought with it countless pieces of trash and sewage. This sea horse drifts long with the trash day in and day out as it rides the currents that flow along the Indonesian archipelago. This photo serves as an allegory for the current and future state of our oceans. What sort of future are we creating? How can your actions shape our planet? " - @justinhofman

"In a stunning move, Britain announces its move to end use of #coal. The UK will be phasing out its coal-burning power plants, with the last one slated to be shuttered by 2025, if not sooner. Great news for the climate!" - @leonardodicapriofdn
-
For four decades, it has been one of the world’s largest coal power plants, often generating a tenth of the U.K.’s electricity. But the Drax Power Station is now one of many across Britain shutting down.

When Drax opened for business in 1974, Britain got 80 percent of its electricity from burning coal. As recently as five years ago, the figure was 40 percent. But last year, it was 9 percent, and this summer coal supplied less than 2 percent of Britain’s electricity. On April 21, 2017, for the first time since its inception, the British power grid went 24 hours without coal.
-
The government says all of the U.K.’s remaining coal plants will be shut by 2025 – maybe sooner. Drax will live on, but only by burning biomass – mostly wood chips imported from the southern United States.

Nurdles:⬇️
-
Nurdles are tiny plastic pellets used in the production of plastic, yet billions escape into the ocean each year from containers and factories and cause incredible damage.
-
Nurdles absorb toxins in the water such as pesticides, then when they are eaten by marine animals and fish (who mistake them for the fish eggs that they closely resemble) the animal gets feeding problems and eventually dies. This can be because it ate so many nurdles and other plastics its stomach became full of plastic and the animal wasn't able to eat any real food, or it just died from poisoning. The toxins can also enter the human food chain from fish and animals that have ingested the nurdles, and absorbed the toxins, then been caught and eaten by humans.
-
Nurdles do not go away, they just break up into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic. When you go to the beach, you can quite easily find nurdles as they are found on practically all beaches. You can help this problem and clean the ocean by picking up any nurdles that you see on the beach, though they are quite hard to find, as well as any other plastic litter that would have ended up back in the ocean. Even just a #5minutebeachcleanup helps.🌎 Nurdles are a bit smaller than a pea and come in all colours, and picking up all the ones you see really have an impact.🌊

Hummingbirds:⬇️
(If you watch until the end of the video you can see the hummingbird fly away with it's incredible beating wings)
-
Facts:

There are over 325 hummingbird species in the world

Hummingbirds amazing colours are not caused by the pigmentation (colour) of their feathers, but by iridescence created by the arrangement of feathers

The average ruby-throated hummingbird weighs 3 grams. In comparison, a nickel weighs 4.5 grams. It would take more than 150 ruby-throated hummingbirds to weigh one pound (the hummingbird in the video is a ruby-throated humming bird)

A hummingbird egg is as small as a jellybean!

A hummingbirds wings beat at 50-200 times PER SECOND, depending on the direction and surrounding air conditions.

A humming birds heart beats around 1,200 times per minute. A humans heart beats at around 60-100 times per minute at resting heart rate.

One of the many victims after a tanker sunk off the island of Salamis in Greece, carrying 2,500 metric tonnes of oil. This is a crisis. The oil spill is spreading. They've had to close the beaches in Athens. It'll be years before the area recovers. We already have the technology to replace fossil fuels for green energy. Why would we wait for this to happen again?
-
Released videos show a whole bay on the island of Salamis full of oil, and a seabird covered in oil desperately trying to break loose of the water and fly away but the oil has stuck its wings together and is slowly killing it. The spillage has caused 13km of beaches to be shut, which will be opened when the spillage has been cleared, which has been estimated that it will take 4 months to clean, yet it will be many decades if not centuries until the ecosystems around Salamis and nearby areas have fully recovered.

1 dollar = 1 tree🌲⬇️
-
What can you do with $1? With @onetreeplanted you can pay for the planting of one tree.🌲 $1 = 1 tree. That is less than the price of a coffee☕️ They give you the option of planting in Latin America, North America, Asia or Africa, and inside these continents there are a range of countries that you can choose from to plant in.🌎
-
Why trees? Trees are essential for our climate, as they replace Co2 with oxygen and also create some of the most diverse biomes in the world, like rainforest. Millions of people depend on trees for food and livelihoods and humans would not be able to survive without them. The trees you plant, wether it be 1, 10, 100 trees or however many you want, will help in reducing your carbon footprint and help bolster local communities where the trees are planted, as well as the planets global health. This is just one of many companies helping the global reforestation effort.

LONDON'S PLASTIC FREE SHOP!
You won't find any packaging here.
-
At Bulk Market in Dalston, nothing is pre-packed and the idea is to fill and refill exact amounts that consumers need.
Shoppers can bring their own containers or bags, or if they are passing by and stop to shop, there are containers available to buy, or compostable bags that can be used and recycled or composted.

Bulk Market sells almost entirely organic foods such as fresh produce, super foods, spices, grains, pasta, chocolate, cereal, nuts, fresh orange juice, honey, maple syrup, coffee, cheese, yogurt, drinks, essential oils, shampoo, conditioners etc. This new sort of shop, says owner Ingrid Caldironi, means less packaging waste and less food waste.

Here's some problems affecting bees for @themothernatureproject 's #endangeredspecies feature.⬇️
-
1. Pesticides. The chemicals we put on our crops and lawns can poison bees, the very thing we need to pollinate the crops to feed us. In gardens this can also be a problem where homeowners spray their flowers and vegetables with pesticides like roundup, and refraining from using such products can be a good way of helping the cause.
-
2. Disease. Because they live in large hives, they are very susceptible to diseases and fungi. Bees are also killed by mites. Imaging one bee carrying mites back to a hive of thousands and you soon have a major problem. However, many bee-keepers have pointed to the sheer speed at which the numbers are declining and claimed that this possibility cannot be responsible for such rapid demise.
-
3. Loss of nesting places. Without good places to make a hive, bees can't survive.
-
4. Climate change, as with every species. Bees furry bodies are not good for higher temperatures so as the climate warms bees become hotter and can die, this will undoubtably get worse in the coming years.
-
5. In order to save bees, we have to change the negative view about them as being pests that will sting you, whereas in fact they are one of the most important organisms on the planet.
-
A way you can help them is by planting more flowers in your garden to give them food and let increase the 'wild' areas in your garden, or even just planting more flower beds at the edges of your garden, not just having a lawn, as bees and other insects and animals can use this for nests and shelter as well. You can also let a small patch of lawn run wild and not cut it as it will grow and become a haven for microfauna, which in turn can feed other animals and make your garden a lot more biodiverse.

-
The price of offshore wind has just dropped to a all-time low, so cheap in fact that offshore wind is now cheaper than nuclear power for the first time! This price drop has come 4 years earlier than predicted, that shows that the switch is being made to renewables, but the energy policy could still be better.⬇️
-
Yet even with this amazing news, the British government still plans to invest billions to nuclear, and the Prime Minister Theresa May still plans to roll out on gas fracking.
-
Please sign the petition in my bio or swipe up on my story demanding that Theresa May look at the evidence about proven lower-cost renewables. This means backing clean sustainable energies, not polluting and toxic nuclear, coal and gas.
-
In recent years, all around the world renewables have been becoming cheaper than their fossil-fuel and nuclear counterparts due to huge innovations and increases in efficiency. UK offshore turbines are already generating enough electricity to match the needs of four million homes, and the industry currently provides full time employment for around 10,000 people
-
Now is the perfect moment for the British government to do more about climate change and fully embrace renewables, and set a trend for the rest of the world to follow. Please sign the petition in my bio or swipe up on my story and join the 100,000 others telling Theresa May to back clean energy and reduce the dependency on fossil fuels and nuclear.📝

Save the ancient Białowieża forest from logging:⬇️
-
Click the link in my bio or swipe up on my Story to support the end of logging in the ancient Białowieża forest. The forest is home to many different kinds of wildlife including 800 land bison and is the last primeval* forest in lowland Europe.
-
The Białowieża Forest extending over 1600 km2 between Poland and Belarus is the last large remaining fragment of the natural forest of the European Plain. It is exceptionally biodiverse, the forest is home to more than 5,500 plant species, and 11,564 animal species, including many rare and endangered species. Almost half of the wood in the forest is dead, and it is this dead wood that has made this forest so special as over 12,000 species in the forest depend on the dead wood for their survival.
-
However, this forest is at threat from logging: Poland's state forestry board claim the extensive logging is to protect the forest against the European spruce bark beetle. On 25 March 2016, Jan Szyszko, Poland's Environment Minister, approved a tripling of forest logging to 188,000m3, again to 'combat a infestation of bark beetles.' However logging is thought to have extensive effects to the flora and fauna.

In July 2017 UNESCO called Poland to stop logging Białowieża Forest. In August 2017 Court of Justice of EU demanded that all logging in the forest is stopped. So far Poland has not implemented the Court's decision and logging and removal of old tree stands continue. Sign the petition in my bio or swipe up on my story to urge the Polish government to protect this ancient and unique forest.

I am going to introduce a new feature to make signing petitions a lot quicker and easier for you:⬇️
-
Basically, the web link to the petition will now also be in my Instagram Story, so all you have to do to sign the petition is swipe up on my Story and the web page will open. This should hopefully make more people sign the petitions and so the petition will have a greater impact and chance of succeeding. My Instagram Story, when I have one, will appear when you click on my profile photo. A few hundred people see my Instagram Story every time I have something on it so this should hopefully get a lot more signatures from people. Petitions take just seconds to sign and are can have huge impacts if they get enough signatures.📝 This feature will start tomorrow and every time I put a petition in my Story I will notify you in the post as well.
-
The link to the petition will still be in my bio as well if you prefer to sign it that way but now if you view my story you will now be able to just easily swipe up to open the page. To go with this new feature to hopefully get more signatures, I will also have more petitions to sign (at least 1 or 2 per week) as petitions are probably the easiest way you can help the environment from your phone.

Further evidence that climate change is affecting us now:⬇️PLEASE READ BELOW AND SHARE⬇️
-
As you will have certainly seen in the news, Hurricane Harvey recently devastated the Gulf Coast of the USA, and most notably dealt significant damage to the city of Houston, which is the 4th largest city in America. It has been estimated that Hurricane Harvey deposited 33 trillion gallons of water on southeast America, so much so that Houston has sunk 2cm deeper into the earth's crust because of the weight of the water.
-
What you may also know is that a new hurricane called Hurricane Irma is now battering the Caribbean and will move onto Florida in the next 18-48 hours. This hurricane will be a lot worse than Hurricane Harvey, scientists do not actually know how fast the hurricane is moving as the storm has either destroyed or disabled almost all of the weather stations in the Caribbean in just a few hours of arriving. The hurricane is so strong it has appeared on seismometers, which are designed to measure earthquakes. Hurricane Irma could be the biggest hurricane IN RECORDED HISTORY.
-
At the time of posting, no news has come through so far of casualties and deaths but it will almost certainly be in the 1000's as less developed countries with less Hurricane protection like Haiti and the Dominican Republic are in hurricane's path. The 2 strongest buildings in Saint Maarten are thought to already have been destroyed, so this mean that many other weaker buildings and houses could be destroyed, possibly on the scale of Hurricane Katrina. This super storm could lead to the addition of a category six to the hurricane-grading system. This is how bad it is, yet Donald Trump is determined to push through with plans like opening up National Parks to oil and coal mining.
-
What is even crazier news is that ANOTHER HURRICANE is now potentially developing in the Atlantic. Hurricane Jose is expected to reach land on Wednesday.
--
There is a lot more I would like to cover on this topic, and I will also give updates as this develops but there is no room left on this post. I will post 1-2 posts tomorrow with updates and the environmental impact.

To celebrate today, here are some worthy causes that you can donate to that help support essential projects around the world.
-
Donate to @dswt and 'adopt' an elephant, or to help support vital elephant patrols to protect elephants like the ones in the picture from poaching. @dswt helps protect elephants and other African animals but they need donations to keep on functioning. To donate click the link in their bio.
-
Donate to @wwf and you can also adopt a range of animals, the donated money goes to helping care for the animal you choose. It goes into ensuring the chosen animal has a safe area to live without fear of poaching. It also goes to helping boost numbers of the species. You can also donate to projects like protecting the Amazon rainforest. To donate, click the link in their bio.
-
Donate to @nrdc and help fund their many projects to raise awareness. Your money also goes to NRDC court cases like protecting the American National Parks from the Trump Administration.
-
You can donate to @greenpeace and help fund their essential activism and court cases. Greenpeace are one of the world's leading environmental organisations and completely rely on donations. They don't accept any money from governments or companies so they can be completely independent and challenge anyone who threatens the environment.
-
You can donate to @amazonwatch , they help protect the Amazon Rainforest and the indigenous communities that live in them from things like illegal land-grabbing an discrimination.
-
In @paulhiltonphoto bio, you can donate to fund elephant patrols to protect Sumatran Elephants from poaching in the Leuser Ecosystem, the last place where wild rhinos, elephants, tigers and orangutans still roam. It is thought that there could be as little as 1,000 elephants left in the wild and by donating you can help protect the ones left.
-
There are thousands of other groups and organisations that you can donate or fund projects on gofundme. Please donate to a organisation of your choice, in honour of #InternationalDayOfCharity .

On the 28th of August, Kenya joined the #banthebag movement and banned the use, production and importation of plastic bags in a bid to stop pollution.
-
Other countries that have completely banned plastic bags are Tunisia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Botswana, Mauritania, Morocco, Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea.
-
However, most countries are now in the way to banning plastic bags. Some countries have small charges for bags and this significantly reduces the amount used.
As of July 2014, the number of places in America that had banned plastic bags was up to 20 states and 132 cities meaning some 20 million U.S citizens are now living in an area where plastic bags are banned. The U.S alone uses 12 million barrels of oil every year to meet plastic bag demand. Every year in the U.S one hundred billion plastic bags are discarded.
Some countries like Mexico and Denmark have introduced a tax on stores when they hand out plastic bags.
-
The number of countries have bans or restrictions in place is growing every year. This is helping reduce the amount of bags that go into the ocean, 8in the Pacific Ocean a lump of plastic the size of Texas is now developing.

Primates include chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, baboons, lemurs and... YOU! We seem to often forget that we too are animals. Humans have become disconnected and think that we are separate from nature and above all other species, when really we ARE animals. I believe that this is the root cause of the worlds environmental destruction. We believe that when we wreak havoc on the planet we are not affected and are somehow invincible to the changes of our ecosystem but we are not; this is our habitat and we are apart of the animal kingdom so everything we do comes back to bite us.
We are the only animal that destroys it's own habitat. It's time to clean up our mess...

Following on from yesterday's video on the Amazon Rainforest, there is some good news for another part of the forest:
-
Brazil’s environmental regulator rejected Total and BP's requests to drilling in the Foz do Amazonas basin, in an area that is only 17 miles from the newly discovered Amazon Reef at the mouth of the river.

This reef, only discovered in 2016, is virtually untouched and only a tiny area of it had been explored so far as it was so recently discovered. This reef is extremely biodiverse and could be a new type of biome, it is that different from other reefs around the world. The first ever pictures of the reef were taken just a few months ago, you can see them and more info about the reef further down my feed. It is vital to protect this reef, as well as the rainforest that could be damaged if the drilling went ahead.
-
Total (an oil drilling company) has been trying to get permission to drill for 4 years and has been repeatedly turned down by Ibama, the Environmental regulator. It is thought that the area could contain up to 14 billion barrels of petroleum, yet if this was drilled and exploited, a spillage or accident would poison all the surrounding forest, then go downstream to the reef at the mouth of the river and cause irreparable damage.
-
This is not a complete blanket ban though. The permission was not given as Ibama said that not enough information had been given about the environmental effects of the drilling. Total now has a third and final chance to send the additional documents, if it fails to this then the permission will be revoked indefinitely, meaning that the rainforest and reef would be protected for the foreseeable future

A huge thanks to everyone who has followed me and supported me over the past year, this account has really developed (just look at the quality of my first few posts) and as this account has progressed I have learnt a lot about things that I had no idea were happening before I created this account and I hope that you have learnt a lot as well through my posts. As this account continues to grow and age the posts will obviously become more informative and there will be more variety to the posts as I continue to learn.
-
As this account continues to develop I would like to introduce new features, if you have an idea or something that you would like me to do or a topic you would like me to post about please comment below⬇️ or send me a DM.
I am open to support, criticism and anything else that you would like to say or suggest as @rescuetheworldtoday would be nothing without you. I have plans to do Subject Weeks like Palm Oil Week (this is one that I have already done) where I post once a day and cover everything to do with that topic, along with lots of petitions and extras.
-
I also now have a blog page on the @ripplezoo site and I suggest you check it out. I have only made one blog so far (about palm oil) and more will continue to roll out in the coming months. The link to my blog is in my bio (and I would also highly recommend following @ripplezoo as they are a non-profit focusing on key global issues like human conflicts and the environment and much more and have bloggers who produce blogs to do with those topics.➡️ @ripplezoo ⬅️

Surabaya Zoo⬇️:
Surabaya Zoo is a zoo in Surabaya in East Java, Indonesia.
-
The zoo was dubbed the 'zoo of death' after animals kept on dying every week. The last remaining giraffe in the zoo died with 20 kilograms of plastic found in its stomach due to being underfed and malnourished so the giraffe had to eat candy bars fed to it by visitors, often with the wrapper still on.
-
In 2014 an 18-month old African lion called Micheal was found strangled in his cage after getting his head stuck between bars, when police arrived the lion had been removed by staff so the police investigation was unable to be completed and lead to suspicions that the zoo had been trying to hamper the investigation.
-
In various reports from 2012 and 2014 there were also things like:

A white Bengal tiger that was missing a ear and had serious spinal problems, being held in the quarantine section.

In March 2012, a photo emerged of a moon bear that was suffering from a painful skin tumour.

In the weeks before Michael the lions death (info above), a wildebeest was found dead in its cage, a few days later a young mountain goat died of neck injuries.

In August, 2010, the Forestry Ministry revoked Surabaya Zoo’s license after animals including a rare Sumatran tiger, African lion, wallaby, Komodo dragon, babirusa, Bawean deer, and crocodile. These are just a few of the hundreds of animals that have perished in this hell.

Most of the animals suffered from things like malnutrition, neglect and mistreatment. There have been allegations of corruption in the zoo keepers, with some being known to buy and sell animals on the black market.
--
Many zoos are still like this today, mainly in less-developed countries where there are less policing and restrictions. Online petitions calling for change in Surabaya zoo received hundreds of thousands of signatures, yet I haven't been able to find any info about wether the zoo has changed so if you know please comment below.⬇️

The American National Monuments (National Parks) are under threat and may have their protected status revoked by President Trump and Ryan Zinke, opening them up to coal, oil and uranium mining:⬇️

⛔️After reading below, please sign the petiton in my bio to stop this from happening and share this to get as many signatures as possible.⛔️

Bears Ears in Utah. Giant Sequoia in California. Katahdin Woods and Waters in Maine. The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument off the coast of New England in the Atlantic Ocean. Papahānaumokuākea in Hawaii and the Pacific Ocean. All incredible National Parks showcasing some of America's most amazing scenery and wildlife, yet Donald Trump's disastrous decisions are putting almost all of these and many others at threat.
-
Some Trump intends to shrink or completely eliminate, others Trump intends to open up to coal and oil exploration and drilling and uranium mining.
-
President Trump does not have the legal authority to do this, but he and Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke have launched a 'review' of the monuments, intended to open them up to fossil fuel and uranium mining to put more money into trump's cronies pockets and more Co2 into the atmosphere that the world cannot afford, accelerating global warming even more.
-
By taking away the protection of the monuments, this would also endanger all the incredible wildlife that call these parks their home and amazing plants like the Giant Sequoia shown in this picture.🐻 The national parks also generate lots of tourism and are popular with and hikers and employ lots of people, despite what trump claims.
--
Please sign the petiton in my bio to help ensure the national monuments continue to live and thrive, and keep the fossil fuels and uranium in the ground where it belongs.

On June the 5th Costa Rica set out a landmark plan to ban single-use plastics by 2021. Why? To protect places like this👆. Costa Rica will be the first country to ban single-use plastic, and the year (2021) is also the year where Costa Rica aims to be completely carbon-neutral, a goal set in 2011.
-
Costa Rica is one of the world leaders in helping preserve the environment, as along with these two projects Costa Rica has also reversed deforestation and doubled its forest cover from 26% in 1984 to more than 52% this year.🌿 Costa Rica has also had whole days where the whole county was powered by renewable energy.💡
-
It is the hope the other countries will follow Costa Rica's lead and ban single use plastics.

A whale has washed up on the shores of Great Britain, but it isn't a ordinary whale -
This whale is made up of the same amount of plastic that we throw away every single second. The plastic epidemic has reached such a point that as you read that sentence around 3 or 4 of those whales worth of plastic were dumped into the ocean.
-
The whale was made by Sky Ocean Rescue, a campaign run by Sky to reduce the amount of single use plastic we use and to reduce the amount of plastic dumped into the ocean. All the plastic the whale is made of was collected from the coastlines of the UK. The whale has been touring the UK and visiting different cities since the 15th of august and will be touring until the 28th, it is hoped to help raise awareness about the use of unnecessary single-use plastic like straws and bags.
-
I have done previous posts on single-use plastic before and you can see them if you look further down my feed. Two thirds of people would be willing to see charges similar to the 5p plastic bag charge that is used in the UK applied to other single-use plastics such as bottles, cups and straws, a survey suggests. 87% of brits are concerned with the UK's use of plastic, and it is hoped this 10-metre-monster, along with lots of other campaigns that Sky Ocean Rescue are running will help motivate people to cut down on plastic.
