In honor of Black Panther reaching a billion in the box office and in an effort to spread good energy regarding body positivity, @nnekagigi, alongside a small team of 3, created the Wakanda Forever! tribute. •
The markings on her body were inspired by Shuri's face paint (top of head), W'Kabi's scars (side of cheeks), the symbols in T'Challa's suit (cheek/ chin/ hands), the linework in Killmonger's Black Panther suit (upper thigh), Zuri's face paint (thigh/leg) and the pattern in Okoye's red suit (thigh).

In 1992, Mae Jemison made history as the first black woman to travel in space. Her passion for science and space dates far back into her youth - at just 16 years old she entered Stanford University for a degree in chemical engineering. Even as a young child she knew science was her calling. Jemison recalled a story from her childhood where "In kindergarten, my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I told her a scientist. She said, 'Don't you mean a nurse?' Now, there's nothing wrong with being a nurse, but that's not what I wanted to be." Throughout her adult life, Jemison has advocated for getting minority students involved in science. She draws her inspiration from Martin Luther King Jr., who she says "didn't just have a dream, he got things done." #blackhistorymonth #maejemison #astronaut #history #womenofblackhistory

Artist @nnekagigi posted this project to a Facebook group and received some overwhelming good and bad reactions. “I have no issue with critical feedback but the bad reactions primarily stemmed from African men and women who seemed to think that the photos were impure, promoted illness and incited men to act in ways “they cannot control”. I was called various names and harassed but that wasn’t what alarmed me.
As a Nigerian woman, I am well aware of why this project received the reaction it did from certain people. Many people started to make mention of the “western” world taunting people and how this “type of foolery” is acceptable for African American women. I have always argued against the sense of superiority that some African women feel over African American women. There seems to be such hostility when topics of sexuality and self expression are discussed amongst A.A. women and African women. We all fight the same battles as women and when we make statements like “you just don’t understand, some men can’t control themselves”, you perpetuate rape culture. We can make a greater leap on this topic in unison. |

When pigs can fly and come and literally untie the binds that have been placed on us, women will have equality. The pigs are untying her lips so she can finally be heard equally as a man and her words will be equally respected as a mans words. Another pig is untying her vagina lips so she can finally have the freedom to embrace her sexuality and womanhood any way she pleases and will still be respected and valuable and worthwhile, not cast as a second rate citizen used and abused and no longer of value. The robot Sistine chapel hands hide the nipples from the front because they have preached women a second class citizen and inequality among women (and anyone not heterosexual) since before the hands were painted on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel. The hands cover her nipples from head on because we will never be allowed to show our chest equally as a man. But you can see them from many other angles (kind of reminds me how some people in church act all modest and cast shame on people doing the same things that they themselves are doing in their own privacy, like head on they are behaving but from all other angles you can see what they are hiding.) They are made to look robotic to symbolize the mental-programming and wiring imbedded in our society that perpetuates inequality. (This is a 3D painting so you can see behind the hands from different angles.)
