Throwback. Current mood. @mrbonesandco. Head to @melissamurraynyc to see how Tucker/Jasper lives now! He has a human brother and spends his time between Brooklyn and the Catskills! (Not bad for a puppy dumped in a ditch in South Carolina 💅).

For those of you who have followed my Instagram story these past days, you know about Frida. I'll share the details of her story, and ways you can help her and her rescuer @rivierarescue, very soon! I came to Mexico for a family vacation, and started searching for local rescues 😅💁 (did I mention my understanding hubby?!). I found @rivierarescue and they seemed "legit" so I contacted them. They turned out to be a fantastic group helping the most difficult cases in Cancun/Playa Del Carmen area. They have limited resources (it's mostly a one-man operation, Matteo, who dedicates his life to the dogs and sells his artwork to help fund it - More on that too, soon!). There was Frida, on a mattress in the jungle. As you know, I've been deliberating bringing her to the US, probably her only chance at adoption. I am looking into bringing her to New York soon, but a lot needs to happen still. In particular we would need an escort. If anyone travels from Cancun or nearby to New York City in the upcoming 2 weeks, please message me! We'll have to make sure temperatures allow for her to travel. Escorting a dog means you take them as a "luggage" (for lack of a better word). Basically put your name on them during your trip. You don't have to pay or do anything else. Meet Matteo in Mexico, meet me in NYC, and in-between, be Frida's guardian angel 👼 (she'll be in a crate in cargo). Please message me if you are able to assist! I've escorted before and it's easy peasy!! 💚#FlowerPowerFrida

NEW YORK: Ollie was found in Puerto Rico in someone's home who had hundreds of dogs. They didn't have any water, just food. It wasn't a good situation as you can imagine. Many dogs were rescued. Three of them came to @AnimalHaven. Ollie's skin needs some TLC. He is missing patches of fur and his skin is a bit raw and itchy. That's a pretty common thing in Puerto Rico, due to weather, malnutrition, bugs and just the general environment for doggies who don't see vets. It should clear up completely or mostly, with time and good nutrition and care. He has actually grown a lot of his fur back already, in just a few weeks. Ollie is very mild mannered. He is waggy and wiggly but also respectful with people and their space. He doesn't jump but just looks at you wagging his tail. Ollie is fantastic with other dogs.He is just a perfect little sato, medium sized, loving and happy. For more information, visit www.AnimalHavenShelter.org or call the shelter at 212 2748511.

HOLLYWOOD, SC: Otis from Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary is a 7 year old Coonhound sweetheart who just finished treatment for heartworms. He enjoys the company of other people and does fine with other dogs. He loves to fetch balls and play with toys. His long, floppy ears are tattered and torn which just adds to his charm. He has a heart shaped mark on the top of his head, the perfect place for a kiss. He could use some leash work. He loves to go for a walk but lays down and won’t move when he’s had enough! For more information and to apply to adopt Otis, visit halliehill.com/dog-adoption-application. Hallie Hill does not transport their dogs, but they welcome apps from all over, as long as you are able to travel to the sanctuary to meet and pick your dog up.

Hallie Hill is a sanctuary/shelter that welcomes dogs nobody else wants or dogs that were rescued by other who gave up on them. HH doesn’t leave any dog behind, but unfortunately they aren’t well known, despite the excellent work they do! I am so excited to give them exposure. They have many highly adoptable dogs who have been waiting a while (even years sometimes!). Please help spread the word! Follow them and share their doggies!

IN MEMORIAM: We recently lost Casper. Kethonia @ketho83 wrote: "In 2015, I moved into my new apartment with my brother after my painful divorce. I wanted a dog and so did my brother. One day I came home and found a surprise waiting for me. It was Casper. My brother had seen your portrait of him on the @nyanimalrescue page and after spending a few minutes with him my brother knew he was perfect. And perfect he was indeed. Casper was a big teddy bear who loved nothing more than to eat, play and cuddle. He couldn’t get enough of the cuddles. Everyone fell in love with him instantly. He became one of my 6 year old nephew’s best friend. Even people in my building who initially were worried or even scared of him because of his size and breed, came to love him. One is actually highly considering adopting. He also had an amazing ability to know when someone was in need of comfort and provided just that, either by being “little spoon“, sleeping one one's chest or just laying next to you. There was never a time when I would be crying or sad that Casper wouldn’t run in my room, jump on my bed and start licking my face. But life with Casper wasn’t always easy. A few months after he came home, he got really sick (intussusception) and required 8h of surgery. Casper was a fighter and amazed even the most experienced doctors. He quickly made a full recovery.
Unfortunately, Casper was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. He stayed with us for another 6 months until he knew his work was done. I had now learned everything Casper had come into my life to teach". Casper spent about 2 years in shelters (first, in the South, then over a year in NY). He was adopted on June 29th 2015. By coincidence - or was it a sign - he was cremated on June 29th 2017. He left behind his sister Lux, another of my models: "Even with a strong independent spirit, she idolized Casper and followed his every move. He would be proud she is holding down the fort well. I wanted YOU to know how much of an amazing dog you helped get a 2nd chance at a happy life and how much the work you do changes the lives of animals and people alike. I think Casper would agree". #pitbullflowerpower #pitbullflowerpowerMEMORIAM

HOLLYWOOD, SC: Ben came to @HallieHillAnimalSanctuary from a rescue that closed in a nearby county. He’s beautiful and has the softest brown eyes. NEW YORK: look at that special needs cutie from @AnimalHaven! At 3 years old, Fido is paralyzed from the waist down. He came to NY all the way from Egypt! People have noticed sensation in his hind legs, So it's possible he might regain the use of his legs. But for now, he gets around fine and can use a chair. He needs his bladder to be expressed in order to go potty. poor little booboo!! He is a loving, fun fluff ball with an adorable underbite.

** ADOPTED! ** HOLLYWOOD, SC: Louis from @HallieHillAnimalSanctuary is very shy but comes around once he feels like he can trust you. So as you can imagine, he doesn't show well with potential adopters and has been waiting for a home a while. He is 7 years old. True to the German shepherd nature, he is a big baby who frightens easily at strange sounds or unfamiliar surroundings. He needs a patient, loving, comforting family. His fur is softer than velvet and his eyes tell how much he wants to be loved. He’s extremely gentle, walks well on a leash and enjoys other dogs. Louie is house trained too. He is perfection and ready for a family!

PUPDATE! SWIPE 😍 Jacob was part of Ivy’s litter (from @redemption_rescues @hemiverse ). In the heat of the Summer 2015, Ivy had given birth to 9 puppies in a backyard in Far Rockaway. Ivy was living outside, day in and day out. Her owner suspected someone had brought in a male to mate with her while she was in heat, and people were lurking around his property to steal the puppies. Lots of dog fighting and animal neglect in that neighborhood. The owner knew this wasn’t a good situation, and he agreed to surrendering the puppies to the rescue. By the time they arrived, one puppy had already disappeared. The rescue convinced the owner to also give Ivy up. She was not even one year old, nursing her puppies in unbearable heat. He agreed. All the puppies got adopted pretty quickly, but it took forever for Ivy to find a home! This is Jacob, one of the pups. He got his sweet round face from mommy! 👩👦😍 I received this sweet update from his mom Kelley @zimzim_: "Jacob is now Taz, and he is just a big lovable goof ball who is 2 years old. He loves to play and nap with his fur sister Daisy (also adopted from Redemption Rescues) and his human siblings. He is our 80lb lapdog and we love him to pieces". .

Totaling about 4.6M likes in 2017, with a bit over 600 posts... That's a lot of doggies helped! This year, #PitBullFlowerPower has continued to change my life and that of many others. It's continued to surprise me and take me where I've never been before. But I won't lie, 2017 has also been incredibly difficult, for a multitude of reasons. My main challenge as a creative is the constant pull between continuing this work, or evolving and creating something new. And the fears of disappointing, or not helping enough dogs, are sprinkled all over that choice. Why change something that works? Because stagnancy is the death of the artist, and the end of what is life. Please wish me to find my way again in 2018 🙏 and wish me the strength to dare evolving! My journey isn't over but it will take courage to pick it up. I wish you the very best for 2018! Find your voice, find your dream, find YOURSELF. Be kind to him/her when you find each other. Be your own best friend, your own mother and father. Be loved at last, unconditionally 🤗💚 .

HOLLYWOOD, SC (near Charleston): Lucky is a senior with a great personality. Lucky always “breaks in” new volunteers from @HallieHillAnimalSanctuary by being ready to push out at their feet as soon as they open his gate! He and his roommate make a mad dash around the compound causing all the other dogs to bark in excitement! The volunteers are always terribly embarrassed by this escape artist. He has been at HH for too long, probably because he was a rough and rambunctious character in his younger days. He still has lots of pep, but has calmed down considerably. His beautiful brindle coat is matched only by his beautiful smile. Lucky does great with people, including children, and dogs. We don’t really trust him not to chase a cat!

Willie Pep modeled a holiday crown for #PitBullFlowerPower too!

NEW YORK: Willie Pep was part of an abuse court case. He and his siblings were seized and held as evidence at an Animal Control facility in GA until the case was over. The Officers asked @HoundsinPounds if they could take Willie and his sister Nina. Unfortunately, his sister died shortly after arriving (she had an undetected stomach cancer). Willie was covered in cigarette burns (especially on his butt) and very skinny. Despite his past, he is an absolute love bug and very sweet! Willie Pep is described as a cartoon character, and I definitively caught a glimpse of that during our shoot! He has recently completed a board and train program and is ready to start meeting potential families. Willie Pep will do anything for his person. He tries very hard to be a good boy, but sometimes he gets confused and just licks your face instead. He is fine with dogs he lives with and knows. Sometimes he puffs his chest out at other leashed dogs but that is what he went to training for, and now he listens when he is told to knock it off. Willie is a true lapdog and quite laid back. All he wants is to hang out with his people on the sofa. He is really chill and happy to go along with anything his person wants. He is currently being fostered in New York and has been waiting for a family for about 15 months now. As you can see, he is one of those adorable low-rider, snorting, hippo doggies, (he was snorting the whole time during our shoot). So adorable. The family who adopts Willie Pep will have free training sessions with the rescue's trainer.

PUPDATE! Look how beautiful Parley is! She was one of the pirate puppies I photographed at @LuvableDogRescue a few months back. She is now called Gretta. This is what her adopter sent me: "Gretta is doing amazing! She is such a sweet, snuggly, loving pup. We absolutely adore her. She joined right in with our other dogs... Stella (pittie mix) and Reuben (french bulldog). She loves wrestling with both but is much gentler with Stella who has advanced lymphoma". Be a good girl, Gretta!

NEW YORK: Vida is a spunky little girl who LOVES to play with other dogs. She is great with people too! She has been waiting about 4 months at @AnimalHaven for a new home, which makes her one of their long timers. At 6 months old already, we don't want her to spend more of her formative months in a shelter! The reason she hasn't been adopted yet, is probably that people get spooked by a medical condition she has. She was diagnosed with “atresia ani” (malformation of the anus) when she was small puppy. But she underwent extensive surgery to correct this condition and thankfully, she made a great recovery! The only thing that has persisted is that sometime she will have a little poop hanging out of her butt. That's nothing serious and given her size, it's like a bunny poop, but it has deterred adopters from choosing her. Vida does great in cars, she just stays still and loves to be held. She has a very happy expression (well, she gave me moody Vogue looks during our photoshoot, but head to the shelter's website for her fun side!) and she loves to be around people just as much as dogs! She was rescued after Hurricane Irma in Florida.

Remember Moose from my special gold shoot? He also modeled a #PitBullFlowerPower crown!

NEW YORK: Moose has been waiting for a new home for 13 months, in the care of @houndsinpounds. He's large and in charge, and that's probably what has scared adopters off, but he is absolutely wonderful (and gorgeous). Moose is a people-pleaser and has been qualified by the rescue as being a real schmoozer. He is just 18 months old and would love to find a place of his own. He is currently in a foster home in NYC area and is a rescue absolute favorite. Moose originally came from Chesterfield, SC and was said to have had heartworm but being clear. Unfortunately, a few months later it was discovered that his treatment hadn't work and so he spent the following 3 months going through a strict protocol, monitored by a cardiologist. That treatment was his last chance. Luckily, Moose made a total recovery and he is now clear for real! When Moose arrived from SC, he had absolutely no manners, and given his size and strength, that was absolutely unacceptable. The rescue went above and beyond and sent him to a board and train program, Now, Moose's manners are impeccable! He tends to ignore other dogs (meaning he does absolutely fine with them) except if a dog gets in his face aggressively. But he listens and obeys very well, so as long as you make sure not to expose him to asshole dogs, Moose is peachy! Moose is a snuggle bug who is quite lazy! He likes a walk and then just hanging out watching a movie with you. He is super goofy and has the cutest little whine! During our shoot, he had to wait for his turn, and seeing his buddy Willie Pep getting all the attention and treats, Moose was politely whining with the most adorable voice. He loves donuts too! The family who adopts Moose will have free training sessions with the rescue's trainer, to learn his command structure and keep him tight.

When you realize you forgot to buy a present for your mom!

HOLLYWOOD, SC (near Charleston): Samantha came to @halliehillanimalsanctuary this summer (2017). She had gotten into a fuss with a small dog in her household and injured him badly. She can be with other dogs her size- but should not be left unattended with small dogs. She loves to swim and play with toys. When she was a young pup, she came to a shelter and was being fostered when she got hit by a car and injured. The foster home ended up adopting her, but she is now at Hallie Hill. She has gone through a lot and is quite fearful of children (so should not be placed in a home with children under 12). She is also fearful of new people and places (not surprising given she has been bounced around all her life). Her adopters should understand that they shouldn't force her to accept strangers quickly. Samantha is housetrained, but suffers urinary incontinence, which is controlled by daily medications. She knows several commands. Sam is very active! She needs an adopter that can cater to her needs. Yes, she has lots going against her, but I'm hoping someone falls in love hard enough they decide to take her under their wings 🙏😬💚 For more information and to apply to adopt Samantha visit halliehill.com/dog-adoption-application. Hallie Hill does not transport their dogs, but they welcome apps from all over, as long as you are able to travel to the sanctuary to meet and pick your dog up.

SWEET PUPDATE From former #PitBullFlowerPower model, Kyla of @ReboundHounds!
Kyla's previous owner had gotten her as an emotional support dog, but she kept throwing up and getting skinnier. The vet presented her with huge vet bills, just to confirm a diagnosis he knew wasn’t going to be good. The owner had children, including an autistic boy, and just couldn’t afford the diagnosis, let alone surgery. Luckily, Rebound Hounds heard of Kyla and offered to take her in. She was diagnosed with Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA), which was causing megaesophagus (ME), a condition where the esophagus is enlarged and can not push food down to the stomach. Kyla landed a fantastic foster home. I called to all of you to help with the fundraiser for her vet bills, and in just a couple of days, the $8,000 needed to save Kyla were raised! She underwent surgery. She got a bit better but still had to be fed sitting up. Her foster family decided they were the best equipped to continue the journey with Kyla (also madly in love with her), and so they officially adopted her. WELL. Here comes the update! Kyla just turned one and her mom wrote: "She’s doing great and is the troublemaker of our squad. Always counter surfing and dropping it so her big bro, Bruno can tear apart whatever packaging her "prize" comes in. Her big sis, Nahla, always stays out of their shenanigans and comes to let us know what's going on. She is still on a semi-liquified diet but she doesn't need any assistance eating at all! No chair, no holding her up to eat or keeping her upright for 30 minutes after. We put her food in the bowl and that's it! We can give her regular treats as well since she chews them up pretty good. She loves her siblings and every person/kid she meets. She's very happy-go-lucky with a a mischievous side. She loves to nuzzle her people and has to have her head resting on us at all times. She blossomed into her personality after her health issues started melting away. Thank you so much for being a big part of why she's here celebrating a year of life!". NEW YORK: Cute alert! Neptune is a sweet little artic fox (well, not really obviously, he is "just a dog") who was pulled from the city shelter three months ago and now in the care of @pupstarzrescue. He is a senior cutie, at about 12-14 years old and 5.2 pounds, and almost entirely blind. His blindness doesn't slow him down much, especially with his person by his side. This small-fry is about the weight of a sack of sugar and just as sweet! An independent little fella, Neptune LOVES to be around his human(s) and will let you know when it's time for kisses and caressing without ever being clingy. Show him his leash and he's ready to rock-n-roll. Give him a plush toy to play with and he's as happy as a clam. Offer him a soft treat to eat and he will gobble it up with glee. While Neptune enjoys chilling out on the couch or some quiet time in his cozy dog bed, he has the energy level of a dog half his age. This guy is not a blob who sleeps all day! His vision may not be quite what it used to be, but he more than makes up for it with his sensitive little sniffer and those perky pointed ears! He is fun-loving, comical, and playful with other dogs. He even has a cat BFF in his foster home right now! Neptune is fully housebroken and is also pad trained. And he will stroll outside for miles with you, if you are up for it! Neptune is pretty chill, but the rescue prefers he goes in a home without small children, because of his tiny size and his age.

2 years ago, we fostered our first doggie (from @AnimalHaven). Sasha was a senior fluffy little white thing who came to the shelter with an injured paw. She also had kennel cough. My husband and I had never owned a dog in the city (I grew up in more of a rural area of France, where our dogs ran free all day, and he had never lived with a dog at all). We had just moved to a pet friendly place, and after working with rescues for so long, I knew fostering was top on my list. I was so glad Sasha was a senior white little fluffy thing with a messed up paw. Because I thought "There is NO way I will fall in love. She is NOT my kind of dog. We will foster her, and then move on with our lives feeling accomplished". Boy was I wrong. It took about, well… less than 24h for us to become completely, utterly, painfully smitten with Sasha PomPom. I gave her paw medical baths. We bought her christmas sweaters and watched over her when she didn’t eat for 3 days because of her cough. I even used a humidificator to help with her symptoms! Sasha came into our lives like a little white tornado. Day after day we wondered whether we should keep her. We didn’t feel entirely ready. I wanted to foster more, and I wasn’t sure I could fit a dog into our lives in a permanent way. And then we got the call. She'd been adopted. The next day we brought her back to the shelter and handed her over. Sten took time off work to come say his goodbyes. I gave her adopter Sasha’s "favorite" christmas sweater. All the time, I thought it was a big mistake. Her adopter could never understand Sasha PomPom the way we did. Our connection was too great. Although I trusted the shelter to find her a great home, we felt we had betrayed her, giving her away to a stranger. We cried for days after she left. We felt so empty and devastated. I thought we could never recover from the loss of Sasha. But then her adopter sent me her Instagram account: @Sasha_notsofierce4. There she was, wearing her Christmas sweater. Later, she was the flower girl at her parents’ wedding, and then she was Wonderwoman for Halloween. They clearly got Sasha PomPom the way we did. She is cherished. She is home. #FosterADog #adoptdontshop

PECONIC, NY: Cleo is a sweetheart who waited at the North Fork Animal Welfare League / Riverhead Animal Shelter (@nfawl) for a year and a half! Her team drove 2h to bring her to my speical photoshoot last week, and before I even had a chance to share her pics, she was ADOPTED!!! (Head to my story for a sweet adoption pic!). This actually happens very often. So often, as a matter of fact, that I usually warn the shelters. All we have to do sometimes is BOOK a shoot! hahahah. This is what her personal chauffeur and super fan Denise wrote to me: "It’s truly the craziest thing in the world, and I really believe that Cleo going to the photo shoot and being hailed as a star made this happen. The adopter had done community service volunteering at the shelter every day last week and we had a lot of buzz about Cleo going into the City for a photo shoot. It gave Cleo a real aura of being special, I think Cleo felt it and certainly the staff and volunteers felt it. So the serendipity here is the story. You made it happen, though not through the usual channels!". Well, whaveter the Universe had in store for Cleo, she is finally home and I couldn't be happier!! (also, GREAT way to adopt: volunteering for a few days to really get to meet the dogs and experience their life). The shelter has many more adoptable doggies who all want their moment too! HOLLYWOOD, SC (near Charleston): Surcee just came to @halliehillanimalsanctuary this summer. Her first name was Onyx but they renamed her. Surcee is a term that has been passed down for generations rooted in the Carolinas. The definition of a surcee is a thoughtful, small surprise or gift. She was tied on a chain in a muddy back yard. No shelter and often her water was overturned. Her owner surrendered her right after she delivered a litter of puppies because most of the puppies didn’t survive. Sweet Surcee was very thin because of a heavy burden of internal parasites. When approached, she would flatten herself so low to the ground, it was as if she was trying to disappear. She has a slight head tilt that the vet thinks is a neurological issue of no real consequence. She barks at strangers from a distance, but cowers and runs when they approach. She is gaining confidence at the sanctuary and does excellent with other dogs that are males. When with a female, she tends to want to dominate her. For more information and to apply to adopt Surcee visit halliehill.com/dog-adoption-application.

NEW YORK: Gouda was rescued by @socialteesnyc a few months ago from a high kill LA shelter, and spent a some time in medical boarding there before traveling to NYC early December. Gouda was one of those neglected senior doggies who end up at the shelter with a litany of medical issues: his teeth were rotten, he had terrible eye and ear infections, and then he came down with a nasty URI so he was on antibiotics and under observation for a while. He’s finally all better and ready to find his forever home! This 10 to 12-year-old boy was obese when the rescue took him in but has slimmed down beautifully and is about 15 lbs now. Gouda is great with other dogs, very friendly, and low maintenance. He likes gentle walks, gets all spunky at snack time, and mostly wants to nap the afternoon away. His vision is foggy, so his foster mom says he wanders around the room gently bumping things like a Roomba until he finds his bed and snoozes. He would do best in a low energy home and deserves the very best for his golden years.

HOLLYWOOD, SC (near Charleston): Elmer is a sweetheart from @HallieHillAnimalSanctuary that everyone loves. He is terrible on a leash, because the moment you put it on him he lies down in protest! He is house trained and great with other dogs and cats. The shelter actually uses him to socialize other dogs. That's how good he is! Elmer is estimated to be 12-14 years old. He is arthritic, but does fine with daily glucosamine. He had some precancerous polyps removed from his colon that were obstructing his bowels and causing him discomfort, but is doing great now. He was shy during our shoot, and such an absolute sweetheart.
