Art by @ikeslimster 🎨👌🏾
i pick up a brush , dip in paint, i have an idea...i want to paint but i'm anxious, unsure, second guessing my whole process, then i start....with blind faith, just moving forward, believing that if i keep going, the layers will form, the colors will come to life and that there?.... sometimes, is the most important lesson you need to learn in life, that's just how the universe works i guess and that's just my closest human to spiritual experience.

@Jolivert: Café NYC . 09.29.17
.
Summer 2015. I was in NY for a couple of months and one day sat for lunch in a café overlooking the street in the West Village. Watched people’s ease navigating the streets while thinking about scenes of our public transportation back home in Port-au-Prince.
.
fluid forms inspired by the Saint-Soleil movement in Haiti

@jolivert: ‘Colorblind’ show is tomorrow: Friday, Nov 17. 7-9pm at @isometricstudio in Williamsburg.
.
While most of my work is consisted of a black and white palette, I started using yellow as an urban sign of warning ⚠️ . The unemployment rate in Haiti is pretty high and often you see people sitting around, waiting... It becomes such a common sight that most who have the power to make a change are desensitized to it.
.
‘La vie est Tout’ ‘La Vie n’est Rien’ are my own wordings inspired by the wise expressions on our tap-tap public transportation and store signage, despite the reality of our daily struggles.

1- Homme (2017) is on display at @IsometricStudio this Friday, Nov 17. 7-9pm during ‘Colorblind’.
.
2- Soleil Brûlé by Jean-Claude Garoute “Tiga” who started the Saint-Soleil movement in Haiti
.
This is Nathalie Jolivert @jolivert, sharing some of my work with you in preparation to my art-show.
.
As a kid in Haiti, I was fortunate to take some classes with Tiga. At school in the US, both as an architecture and art student, it always required an extra step for me to find out more about non-western influencers... Growing up in a country which holds a lot of pride in its arts and crafts, I gladly took those steps. This challenge, and meeting people from various cultures who experienced the same, made it that more exciting to me!
.
In the same vein, if you are a fan of podcasts, I would recommend you check out a recent TED NPR Radio Hour on “How Art Changes Us” in which artist Titus Kaphar shares his thoughts on the erasure of history in art.
.
Thanks for reading and hope to see you on Friday!

Despedida IV 11.27.17
In preparation to Nov 17 . 7-9 pm
@jolivert Art talk-show-sale at @isometricstudio .
Hiding each other’s eyes to live in proximity .
.
Connecting with others through my stories is what I strive to the most with my art. .
We engaged in a staring contest, and as I couldn’t anymore, I reached my hands towards his face and closed his eyes. He did the same and pulled me towards him and we kissed.
.
“You should paint this moment”.
.
His contract was ending. We separated in a storm of emotions. I called it Despedida (farewell).
.
The first time I showed this painting in Port-au-Prince (2014), some people immediately thought about the recent ruling to take away citizenship from Dominicans of Haitian descents. In NY (2015), others thought about the racial protests in different US cities....
.
The simple forms of this painting, are inspired by the Saint-Soleil art movement, a style that foreigners, including the Spanish subject in this image, seem to have a particular attraction to when they go to Haiti... Also an art movement that some contemporary Haitian artists refuse to associate to, as it too easily categorizes our art as “primitive”.
.
Its been interesting to learn about different interpretations of this painting. I was very hesitant to produce or ever show it....
.
“This painting will never accumulate wealth in your hands”. My last words to Spain. Young naive heart looking for meaning in history...

Billboard by Deep East Oakland documentarian @brittsense 🙌🏾 Since my billboards have been up I've been asked what was the process. When walking around communities where melanated people live, the advertisments are one of the biggest triggers along with the food establishments, liquor stores and everything else that is put there intentionally to lower our vibrations. I realized this since I was younger but didnt have a blueprint at the time to help with solving the problem. For generations my people have been bombarded with negative imagery and messaging from mainstream media. The reason? WE are not telling our OWN stories. If our existence isnt being talked about negatively our culture is being exploited. With my billboards i wanted to change that. Advertisments are put up so we can consume, be distracted and physiologically controlled. With my billboards the mission is to make my people aware of their royalty in a world that tells them it dosent exist! If i was to add up all the money i used to spend on major corporations it would be thousands so i decided it was time to invest thousands into myself & my people. Paying for all these billboards by myself took alot of discipline and many people doubted me when I said I would put them up but I never doubted and manifested them daily. I will never beg society to include my people when this world was ours to begin with, but instead i will continue creating my own platforms for us to grow from. So for all of my people that are from deepeastoakland and any other place the media talks down about to make you feel like you're not capable of prospering or helping your people prosper that is an illusion to keep us in FEAR. It can be done. Continue to believe in your vision & mission daily and if it's rooted out of unconditional love it will eventually align in the moment it's supposed too.Thank you to every soul that have purchased my self published book THE POWER OF MELANiN
AVAILABLE NOW at BRITTSENSE.COM. No more Begging or Asking for acceptance, The moment to tell our own stories is NOW. The time to unconditionally love, invest, support & build is NOW.

“Traversed many worlds, without a cost
-I just read between the lines- but no lines were crossed
-Thrived in a heated jungle once...even met Jack Frost
-Ran into the past...saw many lives lost
-Provoked by harsh words... but fought back only in my thoughts
-I love being a Pupil to Printed pages
-So, leave me to my Biblical chicken soup-every day like the greeting of the Sun
-I’m shining...my change is major, flipping pages like I’m peeling layers- Another Chapter is Done!”

Intergenerational trauma as a result of historical looting and systemic inequity have heavily influenced our present day, from health disparities to inhospitable housing, poisoned natural resources, and lack of access to adequate foods, to name a few.
Capitalism continues like a plague in its consistent attempts to leave our communities barren. How do centuries of oppression translate to contemporary structural issues that continue to affect marginalized peoples? As people of the African diaspora, as First Nations people, as working class people, as people living on the margins, how will we engage?
This conference, the first of its kind, will focus on the following areas: environmental justice, rethinking historical trauma through epigenetics and public health, black masculinity, healing in the African diaspora, decolonizing spirituality, gentrification as neocolonialism, afrofuturism, indigenous creativity, and alchemy. Guests will be able to engage in workshops, panel discussions, and networking with creatives, healers and organizers.
Diaspora Radicalx's first conference was made possible by Shaira Chaer, Veronica Agard, Malanya Graham, Chef Diamond Wynn, Terron Davis, Abby Rojas, Chelsea Garden, Lanee Bird, Pati aka Bruja Rebel, and Oscar Lopez.
Special thanks to Green Workers Cooperative, Steven Deheeger, and Jennifer Lopez.

Ephrem Solomon (@ephrem_solomon) uses wood carving as medium for his pieces as a direct link to 20-century politics, and the game of domination that goes along with it. At the heart of his works are empty faces, empty objects, that embody within solid fields of colour contemporary life in Ethiopia. Although his portraits have a timeless quality, he collages scraps of newspaper to the prints to inject them with markers of contemporary life. "My work portrays the distance between what the governed people need and want and what the response is from the governors". Words via @fondation_blachere
