Tomorrow, come out and support @printbyprint’s exhibition, An Ode to Healing 🙌🏾🕯️🎨 "The wound is the place where the Light enters you." -Jalaluddin Mevlana Rumi
Opening Reception Sunday, January 21st, 2018 4PM - 6PM
Gallery Corridor Gallery, 334 Grand Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11238
Exhibition Dates January 21st - February 25th, 2018
In partnership with @Rush_Arts, @PrintbyPrint is excited to present An Ode to Healing: A Poetic Exhibition for those in Recovery. Curated by Minkie English, this exhibition will be at Corridor Gallery, located at 334 Grand Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11238.
As we journey through life we are forced to face, or hide, our wounds. Our traumas, which are the results of physical and psychopathological phenomena threatens our mind, body, and spirit-our wholeness and existence-leaving us unbalanced, even on a cellular level.

Healing is about connectivity, physically and/or meta-physically. It is our reconciliation of our ephemeral and unforgiving reality. Healing and its complexities can be arduous at times and undeniably poetic during others. It is an ode to our existence and our presence in the here-and-now. Like an ode, healing is an exalted and inspiring journey guided intensely by emotions. It is the light that enters the wound, 'fostering positive opportunities for self-knowledge, growth and resilience'. An Ode to Healing: A Poetic Exhibition for Those in Recovery is a lyrical poem for those in recovery from the challenges they are forced, and/or choose, to face; recognizing and celebrating the process of achieving wholeness. Eight artists-five visual artists and three performance artists-whose work has continued to uplift and heal others are featured in this exhibition. They are visual artists John Paligaro, Steven Cogle, Kelly Niceley, Allie Wilkerson, and Mona Kamal; and performance artists Damali Abrams, Brittany Williams, and Tsedaye Makonnen.

Self Portrait by @photofelli 📸
I am interested in history's complex relationship with the way Black bodies have been portrayed in early methods of photography, specifically wet plate. By learning this process of creating "tintypes" and ambrotypes I in turn am using the medium to create a new narrative based on contemporary Black Bodies. I am especially interested in documenting Nonbinary individuals.
I am interested in the visual conversation that happens when people of color document their own as opposed to the narrative being directed by Europeans or white Americans.
These visual stories will bridge the past with the present, in a way rewriting history.

‘America’s Civilized’ by @honeiee 🎨
The colonizers hegemony of the 17th century. How does it continue to shape Americans, physically and mentally, today?

Incredible sculpture by @hankwillisthomas 🐌
2017 has been incredibly challenging and rewarding. We were able to work on projects in 20 states, 10 countries and 5 continents. One of my personal highlights was creating and debuting “The History of Conquest” for @prospect_nola . This is one of the most complex works I’ve made to date. I’m especially grateful to @thewadsworth @jackshainman @toschoon for their support and collaboration on this epic project.

GORDON PARKS 📷
I AM YOU | PART 1
JANUARY 11 - FEBRUARY 10, 2018
@jackshainman
524 WEST 24TH STREET, NEW YORK, NY 10011

Opening reception for the exhibition: Thursday, January 11th from 6 – 8 PM at 524 West 24th Street.
What I want. What I am. What you force me to be is what you are. For I am you staring back from a mirror of poverty and despair, of revolt and freedom. Look at me and know that to destroy me is to destroy yourself.
Gordon Parks wrote these words in 1967. Whether through photographs, words or music, Gordon gave a voice to the sometimes voiceless and demonstrated the transformative power of self-expression. His photographs transcend art, history, race and culture and have endured to stand the test of time.
Peter W. Kunhardt, Jr., Executive Director of the Gordon Parks Foundation
Jack Shainman Gallery is pleased to announce Gordon Parks: I Am You | Part 1. As a photographer, film director, composer, and writer, Gordon Parks (1912-2006) was a visionary artist whose work continues to influence American culture to this day. In collaboration with the Gordon Parks Foundation, this first half of a two-part exhibition will focus on Parks’ lesser-known bodies of work, such as his elegant compositions of artists in their studios, as well as his timeless fashion photography.
Though Parks is best known for his photographs documenting much of the civil rights era, he spent many years as a freelance photographer for a variety of publications, working across many subjects. Among his lesser-known works featured in the exhibition are a series of portraits of artists in their studios, including Helen Frankenthaler, Alexander Calder and Alberto Giacometti. A 1951 group of images taken in Giacometti’s studio transforms the artist into one of his creations – skeletal and draped in shadow, yet still dominating the composition, even from the background.
I Am You also includes examples from Parks’ fashion works taken during the 1950s and 60s in New York. He showcased a signature aesthetic, which photography historian and Gordon Parks Foundation board member Deborah Willis calls street style.

“Ribbons” by @odyism 🎨
A new painting about diasporic feels and building a home within yourself.
•••••
Ribbons:
You dream of a home to return to
A motherland that you desperately try to remember
But does she remember you?
You whisper prayers in foreign tongues
Wrapping yourself in their consonants and breaks
Cocooning in their ribbons, soot, and soil
You build a new home within yourself
But does she remember you?

(Re)mnants by @museofire 📽️
Artist in Residence at @fluxfactory ✨

Come out and support (Re) mnants is an interactive digital media installation, chronicling visual artist and filmmaker Monique Muse Dodd’s @museofire journey into her ancestral and spiritual heritage. (Re) mnants is a conscious act of (Re) membering, (Re) imagining, and (Re) vering those who have come before us and still walk among us.

Asking the questions “how do you remember, and what do you choose to forget?” Muse pulls from African American quilt making traditions to use scraps of knowledge and traces of remembrance to fashion a clearer picture of her familial past/legacy. After tracing her lineage through a popular DNA testing site, Muse was faced with the reality that ancestry is more than percentages, and that although much of her ancestor’s stories were engulfed by the tumultuous tides of the Transatlantic slave trade, their memories live within her. (Re) mnants is as much a film as it is a ritual. It is an ongoing performative ritual of communing with ancestors, whose names she doesn’t know, yet whose spirits hold an everlasting influence on her life and artistic process. Utilizing video, soundscape, and projection mapping, Muse refashions her family history to create a portal for participants to cross the boundary between the imagined and the biographical, the physical and the spiritual, the living and the ancestors. (Re)mnants is a memorial and a rebirth, join as she opens a portal into the ethereal.

Ancestor Project by Kwame Akoto @osramba_media 🙏🏾
The enslaved ancestors of the #Nkyinkyiminstallation at my studio before they left for the slave forts and dungeons of Usher Fort and and Cape Coast Castle. If you ever thought this was haunting then you should see them now. I'm leaving Cape Coast Castle today after a brief visit, doing research for the next stage of the installation. The atmosphere there have already taken toll on them. You can literally see the light and life have been sucked out of them. I can only imagine what happened to human beings. See the next post for current photos. Curated by @legacybros | Assisted by @nii_kwarteiquartey 🙌🏾

Excellent work by Kerry James Marshall @kerryjamesmarsh 👌🏾
“As long as the work remains figurative, it clings to this kind of popular domain. And I'm okay with that because I think the challenge is to be able to get that work into the position that you want it to get into. Then it will have done something. To abandon that would be a failure on my part. Because it's easy to do – I think it's much easier to do abstracted and conceptually oriented work and to have it sort of refer to black culture and the racial thing. It's easy to do that. But it's harder to do it when you've got to have the black figure in there.” @kerryjamesmarsh Mastry opens at MOCA Grand March 12th! 🎨
