I pushed through arms & chest today despite having an egg on my deltoid (metaphorically speaking) from travel vaccines yesterday - ouch Possibly not my wisest move and my ego is also suffering when @kelseywells keeps putting pushups at the END of her upper body sessions - since when can I not even do a push-up on my knees! Ah well, something is always better than nothing :) Hope everyone survived Tuesday (just realise I wrote Monday there cos I was off yesterday - ha!)
Snippets from my #PWR arms & abs workout which I did after our family day out today. 1) Pushups seem to remain ever-challenging so I’m glad Kelsey keeps them featuring regularly in her programme, I feel like they have to be one of the best all round moves there is and there are SO many variations to keep it interesting 2) The inchworm I’m working on holding my core tight and I see in this video it slips sometimes - so a good thing to work on and trying not to ‘arch’ my upper back to compensate 3) Overhand bicep curls! A new one to me and feel a bit strange to execute .. I’ve had to drop the weights right down but what’s growth without challenge?! I also get some forearm and wrist pain doing these - anyone else? A quick googling suggests this isn’t uncommon at first. Hope you’ve all had/are having a wonderful Sunday!
Today we took it outdoors and took in some of this beautiful countryside and fresh air with a good walk. I finished off with some stretching and foam rolling at home, the latter of which I definitely don’t do enough off (and quite dislike)..let’s hope it’s worth the pain tomorrow! Happy Saturday! •••• #liss #countrywalks #thegreatoutdoors #familytime #sistertime
When you go to the gym in such a hurry you only realise at the end that your bra is inside out Apologies to anyone sitting near me on the train this evening, there genuinely was no time to shower And no I don’t normally dress in a gym kit, leather boots and a turtle neck #pwrprogram #kelseywellspwr
CALLING ALL NORTH LONDONERS (or South Londoners or non-Londoners for that matter because I think it’s worth travelling for) - If you haven’t yet been to Lanka you are seriously missing out. The chef has previously headed multiple Michelin star restaurants before setting up on his own and this is truly a place like nowhere I’ve been (and I’m not even that into cake). It’s a stones throw from Finchley Road underground. See my stories for examples of more of his genius #cake #delicatessen #patisserie #lanka #londoneats
Who’s trying to get insta-famous? ♀️♀️♀️ I overheard some young women laughing recently that people would think they were trying to get ‘instafamous’ when they posted a specific picture. It made me question what my purpose actually is on here. I set up this page because I’d been following bbg girls for months and was envious of how liberated they were in sharing their stories and connecting with other bbg folk. At the time I felt like I could never do that in case people I ‘knew’ found my page. After a holiday abroad I bit the bullet and the longer I have this page, the more I enjoy it. IMO one of the best things about Instagram is that you have complete autonomy over what you put out there and who you see in return - I take zero offence if anyone unfollows me (and would encourage them to) when my selfies get annoying ... (it’s hard to find a picture to post on days you’ve spent all daylight hours at work!) - - - - This page is like a diary for me, a little space to share my thoughts and feelings. So thanks to @eliannealexander and @activelyrees for your thoughts on this topic today OK now in actual fitness news it was a #PWR chest/triceps for me today in my new favourite @adanola bra (I wore a shirt over cos I was too scared to get it out in public - it’s a little tight ) and I couldn’t help lol-ing when the gym creep cornered a poor unsuspecting female for 20 minutes+ !! .... I could only laugh cos I’ve been there and learnt the hard way!
We are all forever short on time in this busy world . I like the quote ‘rather than saying you don’t have time, try saying it’s not a priority and see how that feels’. I think when we prioritise work/our families/sleep above exercise that’s absolutely fine and normal, but we just need to make sure it’s a choice not an accident. I hurried home via the treadmill this evening and squeezed in 15 minutes of interval sprints - in and out the gym in half an hour flat. Nothing is too little!
Gym shut? Find another one ♀️ Our local closes at 6pm on the weekends so after a day of picking up my wedding dress(es) from the dry cleaner, going for lunch, napping, doing some work, before I knew it I’d missed the boat. Turns out other branches are open later.. cue jumping on the and popping into one in town. So not only got a workout in but tried out a different gym. WIN
I love that I can fail at the gym. No one gets upset, no one loses out, no one dies. Every so called failure makes me literally stronger and makes me learn my limits so I can push them next time. I actually love failing at the gym, because failing there equals growth. Wouldn’t it be great if we could look at the rest of life in this way?
Thanks to my sister for being my stand-in instagram husband, I score you at least an 8/10 ♀️ Sunday is a great time to plan your workouts for the week, it takes 10 minutes to look at your schedule and work out when you can slot one in. I view my workouts like I would a date with a friend or a work meeting - give yourself the same respect you would to those and show up •••• #sundaysweat #sunyay #sisters
When your sister insta-stalks you on the treadmill ️♀️ These were some #HIIT sprints that I did to finish off after my #kelseywellspwr back and shoulders session. It’s been a while since I’ve done sprints and it felt good to get my HR up after a slower and controlled strength session. She did a #kelseywells #postpartum workout. Happy Saturday! •••• #sisterworkouts #sweatsaturday #bbgpwr
WOULD YOU BELIEVE THIS IS THE NORTH OF ENGLAND? Maybe it’s because I’m two-glasses-of-wine-and-a-margarita down, but this pic could have been taken in the Bahamas in my eyes. I’m currently headed oop north to visit my wonderful parents (pictured), sister, nephew and 94-(I think,I’ve slightly lost count!)-year-old grandmother for a couple of nights. I’m blessed with a wonderful family and love to spend time with them whenever I’m able to. Looking forward to the empty northern gyms, beautiful coastline, and being force-fed chocolate biscuits (you don’t mess with nana and her biscuits). Words of Wisdom from an old favourite —— This week hasn’t entirely gone to plan exercise wise in that I worked late last night and then tonight got caught up in endless underground delays and once I did finally reach home just wanted to eat, pack for my weekend away and sit down (after standing between roughly 18 armpits on the overcrowded train). So it’s an easy evening for me with sushi and chillHappy...thursday? I think? This week has me all kinds of confused!
Whilst everyone’s busy sharing their ‘top nine’ posts of the year I thought I’d put my take on it and share my ‘favourite nine’ - my insta-faves who I look forward to seeing on my feed each day! (in no particular order)
1. @activelyrees for being unashamedly honest about who she is and for telling the world why she had a boob job, plus how excited she gets from her workouts
2. @brookienocookies for hustling one day at a time with two kids in tow and for being my biggest cheerleader!
3. @dr_ailsa for being a fellow medic I can relate to and being real about the balance of being ‘the doctor’ with living life
4. @chloebrotheridge for being my go-to for all things wellness and offering reassuring words and calming yet practical life advice
5. @nat_tilly for her balanced outlook on exercise, her attention to detail with form and THOSE dance moves!
6. @fitwith_brit one of my most loyal follows for her post-partum body goals, unashamed love of sweet food and bargain clothes coupled with killer workouts and terrifyingly impressive discipline
7. @cezactive for always being a smiling ray of Welsh sunshine!
8. @claireguentz for being the most committed person I know to macros/blogging and for having the ultimate in instagram husbands all whilst working as an ITU nurse
9. @kelseywells BODY GOALS and taking it from being ‘another’ bbg girl to an ultimate fitness empire •
One recurring theme amongst many of my faves is their total honesty about just being who they are. It takes guts to do that in the public domain (or maybe it’s liberating, I don’t know?) but as much as I love the odd aesthetic feed I really enjoy learning about all your ups and downs/funny little anecdotes/dramas and so on. There are a whole load of other pages I could have mentioned but these are definitely up there with my current ‘fitness’ faves #wcw
Ok ok ok so we may have just booked to go here in a month I’m just a little excited Who’s been to the Dominican Republic? I’ve always wanted to go to the Caribbean, please let me know any tips/recommendations! 🥥 pic via @sublimesamana •••• #honeymoon #dominicanrepublic #sublimesamara #caribbean #travel #wintersun #beach
Happy January fo’ real (yesterday felt more of a trial run no?) and here’s your helpful/annoying reminder that if you wanted to exercise this evening but are currently facing the prospect of finishing work to // and would rather get home to Netflix and Christmas cake leftovers (I sympathise) .. just do a little! Even if you walk 20 minutes rather than take the bus, you’ll 100% feel better (provided you have an umbrella with you). Also, as I discovered earlier today Christmas cake makes an excellent pre-workout, so you could even weave that into the plan You’re welcome.
has been one of my happiest years not least because this little guy (my nephew) came into the world . I flew to Canada for his birth in the summer and when the time came to leave I cried all the way to the airport (and half the way home if I recall correctly) - you can’t tell but I’m crying behind those sunglasses in the second picture! My family had a tough 2016 after my sister’s first son Xavier was stillborn, casting shockwaves through us all and a shadow of grief and loss over the year. One of the first positive steps I took in the aftermath was to train and complete my first #halfmarathon (#thegreatnortherun)raising over £700 in aid of @tommys_thebabycharity who do some wonderful work. Running was such a cathartic process for me at the time and though I haven’t kept it up in favour of my resistance workouts, I would highly recommend the whole experience to anyone. Having this little guy arrive safe and sound a year after we lost his brother, and then making his first trans-atlantic trip for our wedding this autumn was the best gift I could have hoped for (he missed our Spring civil ceremony due to being in utero!) My sis has been so amazingly strong with everything and going through two pregnancies back-to-back AND being a new mum AND even getting back into her workouts!I’ve got a feeling 2018 can only get even better from here•••• #stillbirth #pregnancyandinfantloss #auntie #nephew #tommys
